For me, it was Final Fantasy. You save the princess from Garland and return her to the kings side. Everyone is happy and the king has his men build your group a bridge so you can explore much more of the world. So, I leave town and step on the bridge and the credits start to roll. WTF! I thought I'd already beaten the game.

For me, the biggest WTF moment is in FFVIII, the first time I encountered the UFO. The battle start, you see an UFO flying from one side to the other side of the screen, the battle ends. And you are like "okaay....WTF?!"

While it's a scripted moment from a battle, one example that stands out to me is the final Seifer battle from Final Fantasy 8. You enter the battle, and your automatic Odin summon, capable of wiping out all enemies in a single strike, takes a swing at him. Odin strikes, and when the smoke clears, Seifer has cut Odin in half! It turns out to be a fairly conventional fight after that, but that one moment was pure WTF.

What was really messed up about that is I played Chrono Trigger right after FFVI, so when I died to Lavos and he destroyed the world, I thought the game was just going to continue. I didn't realize that was actually an ending.

I think the first time that I seen Anima drag my characters into purgatory, then show she had another half to her body, all while BREAKING the chain handcuffs that kept her hands tied up and then proceeding to pound my characters to dust while going absolutely ballistic doing her Oblivion technique is the biggest WTF moment I have ever had in a video game!!! It was AMAZING!

Being new to the game back then, I wisely heeded that warning. My first game over in FF12 was in the Barheim Passage at level 8, when I let the charge drop below 30 percent (at which point I got spammed OP undeads & they pwned me).

I think Ruby weapon is a bigger "WTF" when our curiosity made us ram that strange little red tentacle thingy sticking out of the stand, only to be faced by the toughest boss in the entire game. Those damn crystals in FF12, how dare they disguise themselves as save points... Although the green one in the Stilshrine of Miriam was a dead giveaway since all save crystals are either blue (standard) or orange (gate crystals). The blue one in the Sochen Cave Palace is just a total mood killer, since you're just coming from the arena where you fight the mandragora bosses, and the dungeon is very unforgiving when it comes to save points as it is (there's only 2 of them in the whole dungeon, including that damned crystalbug). So if you get a Game Over on your first trip there, you're going to lose a LOT of progress.

When facing the judges, you can equip the Nihopalaoa while you have "Reverse" activated and it should make all potions heal your party members. So long as they can't cast cure, cura, curaga, or curaja on you, you're golden.

A pretty funny one but not a difficult moment, in FF8 in the fight with Adel, Rinoa is not immune to the Devour command. What's worse, is that devouring her actually gives you a HP stat boost. It still gives you a game over though, so the developers must have been having some fun there. Definitely can make you say WTF.

When battling a Grand Dragon in Final Fantasy 9, like the one seen in this video, There are three rules you must follow. One; Always have Eiko in your party. Two; Make sure everyone is at least level 40. And Three; Have Eiko alternate between Summoning Carbuncle and Pheonix EVERY turn! Starting with Carbuncle. Also, remember to pray the beast only kills one party member on the attack, and it always gets the first move.

Ultimacia did it first back when they were GFs and even blew your magic away in Final Fantasy 8. how come Fake President isn't on this list? if you didn't have a walkthrough or guidebook back in the day some people may of been surprised when you had to battle him and he turned into the zombie thing. i didn't realize Garnet couldn't concentrate doing magic or other actions too. that only happened to me sometimes when i told her to summon. some of these just seem to be poor planning or bad common sense and not real WTF moments

In Bravely Default (yes, I count it as a FF game), at the end of the bonus dungeon, you face the Adventurer and his dog. Each time his dog dies, he revives it and does a lot of damage to boot. All right, the dog doesn't have much HP so it's okay. But when he died, after an hour of stress, and his dog got a turn, the fucking dog went and fully revived the Adventurer and I just exclaimed after a minute of stunned silence. I gave up and was going to take him out my next play through after I cooled down for a while. Unfortunately, I have yet to get far in a subsequent play through so I'll probably never get to him again.

Biggest WTF in FF12 for me was Disma. It's end game, and it's just a zombie mage boss- crappy base unit. Not that many HP... no biggie, you'll kill it just like all the other typical hunts. Nope... silly little zombie puts up one hell of a fight.

Easy pwnage, right? *WRONG.* The moment his HP goes critical, he becomes a ridiculously OP HAX little b@$tard. I cussed a BUNCH b/c of how fast and powerful his attacks were. A level 60 zombie should *never* be able to hit for 5000+ AoE with Darkga and 3000+ with extra-fast normal attacks even with powerups. Never! It took my level 80 party an *INSANE* amount of effort to kill him off. And I was using Bubble, Excalibur, and a bunch of other moves - even Quickenings.

Lissa S Here's a few more "WTF" scenarios in FF12: The rare monster Anchag is listed as Level 30-ish, but it's strong enough to *oneshot on-level characters* according to the official guide. And the guide isn't lying; its attack strength is that of a level 40+ monster. Like, seriously?! As if that wasn't "WTF" enough, there is a (supposedly) level 24-25 rare undead monster in the southernmost section of the Golmore Jungle. But his skeleton minions hit like level 40 monsters, and as for the big guy himself? Get this - he gives level *50* parties a hard time with all his AoE moves. *Level 50!* What in the flying f--k, Square?! Want another? How about Feral Retriever and its Balance spell? That mark (Level 28; HP 22,559) uses the Balance spell when its HP is critical, and Balance does AoE damage *equal to the difference in the caster's current and max HP values.* Have you considered how OP that is, given the Feral Retriever's stats? Think about it. What if every FF12 boss used that move even a few times during their respective battles?

I actually have a WTF moment from Final Fantasy VIII. The Propagators. The first time I fought one I barely escaped w/ Squall and Rinoa both still standing. Every time these things attacked, they either blinded Squall, or used a death ray on Rinoa. FF5 Skull Eater. You're chillin in this cave with a bunch of easy squirels and then this guy shows up. You say oh skull eater, monsters in this cave are easy, this is only a recolor, no problem. +omegabot86 Never had that happen to me, thank God. I read the guide and they only get aggressive if you attack them by mistake. Once that happens, though, they literally unleash hell on your party.

cameraREDeye Well, it did happen to me. I didn't know at first, so one of my members just rushed at it and began attacking the pot, making it use physical attacks that are actually faster AND stronger than any FF12 superboss and spamming Flare over and over. One thing i like, when you use an Elixir on it, you can steal it right back from the pots and take your sweet time to slay it. I like it a lot ;-)

cameraREDeye The strategy guide says it has 99 strength and 99 magic, combined with the highest possible defense. In other words, just run. If a Magic Pot gets angry, it makes Omega and Yiazmat look like a soft candy. I like the Pots from FF7 a lot more LOL :D

so the non-international versions of FFX were pussies, you only had to kill a 99,999 HP Omega weapon instead of 999,999 HP. you had no Dark Aeons to fight to go back to get the items in Besaid for Auron's overdrive or Valefor's overdrive. you had it easy...

Not really. I've played both and I have to say the dark Aeons and the Omega weapon fight, especially the omega weapon fights, weren't especially hard. Now they had their annoying WTF moments, but the international version wasn't the hardest thing.

Anima Tweek Yeah, the warp spheres were a pain to get anyway. I saw the way to get the 99 warp spheres, and did everything to get it. When I didn't, I was so confused (same with don tonberry). Then I looked at the footnote "Not in U.S. version" I am sure you can imagine my reaction. Due to the lack of don tonberry, and my save file on the game being wiped THREE TIMES, I just recently beat my first arena monster xp

Joshua Egan I beat 12. I didn't beat 10 lol I couldn't get past Jecht with my party, no matter how hard I tried and I wasn't about to endgame grind. 12 is however twice as long if you do even half of the extra stuff.

For me honorable mention would be midgar zolom in FF7. Now I knew it would be tough because game told me so many times. Even so, when I challenged it after some leveling, I was really expecting the difficulty to be only because of too high stats for its time and that's how the first half of the fight lured me to think. And just when I think I might got this, the grind paid off, BOOM, it removes one of my characters from fight and hits me with something I perceive as giant ass mushroom cloud from hell. That fucking snake just hit me with a nuke and more importantly did more damage to my whole party than I will even have in next few hours! Again, I know even story told you it's supposed to be nearly impossible fight but snakes don't shoot you with nukes! Because of that it deserves to be at least mentioned

4:43 - The thing I love about that enemy though is in several of the older FF games, there are places you can go to in the beginning of the game where you can fight really tough enemies way before you're supposed to (in FF1, it's a disgustingly easy way to power level once you have the right abilities).

SBaby maybe once you grab balthier and Fran. Unless...you mean a LOT of grinding. Ain't much but wolves and cactaurs in the eastersand, and even the westersand only goes up to like level 7-9. Any further and things spike quickly, Giza plains are somewhere in between. Isn't really anywhere to grind that will get you from level 9 to fighting the Saurian iirc. Especially given the lack of equipment available that early.

You can actually beat feral chaos in Dissidia, but I would strongly recommend not to attempt it ever because the game is programmed to believe that you would likely lose that fight, as a result if you do beat feral chaos you still get the same dialogue from the moogle as if you lost the battle rather than winning it which I found to be hilarious.

You forgot to mention that Emerald Weapon's Aire Tam Storm (Materia backward btw) Deals damage based on how much materia you have if you have 9 materia per character then that character is good as dead so you can only engage it with 4 to 6 materia per character so you will mostly be using Knights of the Round, Limit Breaks, Support materia and Command materia (mime and w-item).

Real question if you have time; How long have you been playing FF games? I only ask because I'm listening to you mention how some things are either very easy or very hard, and I really want to ask did play any of these parts/games before the internet exploded and if you got stuck on a part, you could just look it up. For example, the treasure chest crap from FFXII, where you couldn't open certain chests or you wouldn't be able to get ???? (forget what it was, but not going to google it just to seem like I know/remember everything) on that one island that had a bunch of chests. I didn't learn about it until I got the info from a very special friend.

C.S. Bailey Yeah when FF7,8,9 first came out, unless you had the strategy guide, get fucked, especially with the missables. If you didn't grind here and there as a precaution and pay attention to hints(like heres an item with poison immunity before fighting a poison Boss or something), then you may end up stuck on a dude for a while. My introduction to Final Fantasy games in general was beating the Materia Keeper for my friend after he got stuck on it for a while(he was too lazy to grind and I was like "fuck it I'll do it!".

Was honestly surprised Ruby weapon didn't take Emerald's place in this list. Typically getting master blastered by a super attack can be fixed with levels, revives, or defensive preparation... but Ruby just slaps your characters away. I remember how mindblown I was that they were just... gone. Also Ruby weapon in the overworld is naught but a wiggly red worm, so I'm fairly certain my adolescent self dropped a pretty big WTF when that fight started. Nice vid btw!
