Probably a dumb question...but why not make an extended range underwater torpedo that can be launched from shore instead? Seems like it would be less visible and less able to be intercepted?
@MrMontanaNights4 ай бұрын
Even the most advanced, modern long range torpedo's only have a range of about 40-50km. To get much more then that the size of the weapons get's too big to really be a usable weapon (and would also, because of drag, be considerably slower and easier to dodge and spot). Ukraine's drone boats have a range 10-12x (400-500km) that and aren't that much slower than a high-speed torpedo is (like, a 5-10% difference really). To put that into prospective, the port of Sevastopol (homeport of the Black Sea Fleet in Crimea) is approximately 300KM from Odessa, Ukraine which is pretty much as close as Ukraine can get to Sevastopol without being actually in Crimea. A torpedo is also much more complex than a surface vessel, even a drone one.

Drag and communications. Floating vessels can have a lot of their most high-drag components just above water level, where they're only acted upon by air, vs. completely submerged where they have to overcome water resistance. And completely submerged means direct line-of-sight communications with satellite guidance is limited or impossible. Real-time targeting without the ability to correct position periodically (at a minimum) means you must somehow determine your location by calculation involving the time, velocity and direction of travel while being influenced by tides and currents that are difficult to calculate with precision, without the ability to correct course remotely. Of course , there is a much bigger problem to consider. At the moment, sea drones are able to approach targets closely without detection, and when they are detected the most powerful ships weapons are not able to depress sufficiently for direct fire, limiting defense often to humans manually aiming machine guns at moving objects in the dark without even effective rangefinding equipment. We can't assume that situation is going to continue indefinitely. At the very least, creating more effective weapons capable of depressing enough to hit objects below ship deck level and at very close range will undoubtedly be developed, or already have been and are slow in being deployed. Detection is just a matter of looking in the right frequency. If you are defending against objects designed to not reflect radar, you develop software designed to look for "holes" in the radar return, where the expected return from surrounding surfaces is missing. Or you bounce specific frequencies of light off the surface until you find some frequency or set of frequencies that reflect waves and the specific stealth materials differently. Ideally, if practical, a two-state device might be best, designed to travel mostly on the surface until close to the target, select a target visually or by radar, then submerge and close underwater. Maybe the bulk of the drone would even be left on the surface to draw fire from the actual weapon as it approaches underwater.

US companies have been working on things like sea drones for years. But Ukraine are the first to use it and show how great they function. I know of ways to counter them at some points. I came up with them years ago looking at what was being developed. Although id never tell Russia about it. I do wish i could talk to the Ukraine developers. I may have a few ways to improve what they have, although since i don't know fine details of what they do I may not have anything new. Who knows.

@BusesAreFatCars4 ай бұрын
You have no clue what you're talking about. Russia has two separate fleets. The ships that sail from Sevastopol in Crimea, and any other ships Russia has. Why? Turkey controls the Kerch strait, that large ships need to pass through to reach the Black Sea. Turkey currently allows no warships or weapons from either side to sail through the strait. So, the Russian ships in the Caribbean are not and never have been involved in the war in Ukraine. Russia won't sail any warships out of the Black Sea as they would not be allowed back in.
@emiliospowerballer14414 ай бұрын
@@BusesAreFatCars To begin with, the majority of the Black Fleet in Sevastopol has been destroyed from the Ukranians, mostly from sea drones. Thus, there really isnt a Black Fleet anymore. Thus, whatever fleet Russia has so far, would be safer being far away from Ukraine. No one claimed they departed Sevastopol, because there arent any ships there anymore, and its up to Turkey to allow Russian warships through. In case you missed it, Ukraine has the ability to target mainland Russia with drones, successfully, striking military and oil/gas installations. Russian warships are safe NOWHERE.

@@emiliospowerballer1441 Did your favourite propagandist tell you that? ATACMS, Taurus, Storm Shadow and SCALP missiles (these last two are the same, just British and French variants) have a limited range. The max of which is around 300km. Their water drones have limited range, likely less than 100km, though can be extended (to a limited extent) You think that Ukraine can target the pacific fleet at Vladivostok? It is over 9000km from Ukraine. No missile Ukraine has access to or even a cruise missile can cover that distance. The longest range cruise missile in the world (Russian KH-101) has a max range of around 5000km. Whereas the prolific US Tomahawk Land Attack Missile has a range around 1000km. While the longest range US cruise missile AGM-129A has a range around 3500km, though is only deployed from B52 Aircraft. Ukraine would need an ICBM, which America is not stupid enough to give them. Those are near exclusively designed to deliver a nuclear payload. How about the Northern Fleet at Murmansk, over 2000km from Ukraine? Even if their drone ships did have that range (they absolutely don't) it would be an act of war by any country allowing what are the water equivalent of missiles to pass through NATO countries to get there. So they wouldn't do it. "Safe NOWHERE" you said. So where does that leave us? Back where we started. You have no clue what you're talking about.

@@BusesAreFatCars Ukraine so far has targeted Russian refineries as north as Novgorog with massive drone attacks (and who said I was referring to just sea drones) with a distance of 1200 kms. Drone attacks are nothing new to the Russo-Ukrainian war. Reuters: 'It struck three Russian oil refineries targeted in the cities of Ryazan, about 130 miles southeast of Moscow; Kstovo, in the Nizhny Novgorod region, nearly 300 miles east of the capital; and Kirishi in Russia’s northwest. The trio of facilities are among Russia’s largest refineries' the source said Not too often do Russian warships dock Russian ports and travel all the way to Cuba as a sign of power projection. If Ukraine has hit as far north as 1200 kms, then surely they could target further. Up to this point, Ukraine has refused to use NATO missiles within the Russian mainland, but we aren't talking about NATO missiles either.

@@emiliospowerballer1441 "Safe NOWHERE" you said. Drones that fly further than 1200km? In possession of Ukraine. I have to ask, are these drones in the room with you now? Do you see them at all times? Or are they fleeting, ethereal, like any other figment of your imagination? Ukraine hasn't "refused" to use NATO missiles over the Russian border. They have been denied the use of long range missiles, which NATO personnel have to target and authorise for them, as admitted by German Chancellor Scholz. You have no clue what you're talking about. The 1200km strike you mentioned. Firstly I've seen no proof of it beyond SBU claims. Secondly, you think the drone flew 1200+km? The SBU never said that. If your propagandists were correct then Ukraine would have steamrolled Russia and regime changed Putin by now (as admitted on video by John McCain and Lindsey Graham speaking to Ukrainian military in Ukraine in December 2016) By now Russia would be being broken up (as talked about by recently by Prime Minister of Estonia Kaja Kallas. People like you are the reason this pointless war happened. Cheerleading for something you don't understand. Then refusing to admit fault and listening to people who only confirm your bias. Not only do you seek murder and death, you do so as a bumbling, misguided midwit. Just as so many EU and US politicians do. "Safe NOWHERE" We'll all be safe nowhere if people like you continue believing nonsense and ceaselessly ratcheting up the escalation to at this point attempt to do little more than save face and avoid admitting fault. All of this could have been easily avoided. Though the plan was never to honour the Minsk Accords and instead to arm, train and recruit Ukraine. Merkel and Stoltenberg separately admitted as much. This nonsense needs to end, and people like you should be paid no heed whatsoever so long as you're living in the fantasy land of your imagination and fabulism.

Because it wasn't a "peace treaty". It would have been little more than giving up Ukraine's sovereignty. This is like if England tried to force the US to give up the eastern seaboard because "it was historically part of England". It's just BS. Also, just to point out that it was Putin that rejected a provisional deal that would keep Ukraine out of NATO in September 2022, because he preferred to go ahead with his full-scale military invasion plans instead.
