Great photos and a valuable video here. Videos like these are why I keep coming back to KZbin. I’ve been making black and white prints at home with a bare bones set up similar to yours and I was wondering if color would be as doable. Really cool to see examples of people getting it done. You may want to give genuine Kodak Vision 500t stock a try one day. It’s not that much harder to develop in ECN-2 at home than C-41 and you can get your tungsten fill in both low and high speeds (and cheaper). Push it a tad to 800 if you want the extra sensitivity. Although you can develop vision films in C-41, I wouldn’t do it. I’ve seen people get surprisingly good results but my tests showed the ECN-2 was better.
@ribsy4 жыл бұрын
thanks for coming back 😊. yea there is so much you can do with photography without having a super legit setup. it's one of the main things i love about film photography. so many ways to achieve an end. would love a tour of your setup
@CineStillFilm4 жыл бұрын
Processing Kodak 500T in C-41 is not the same as processing CineStill 800T. For one, 800T is designed for C-41 processing. Also, remjet will contaminate you’re C-41 developer and cause tonal shifts. If you chose to process your film in ECN-2, you will need to fully remove the remjet before it goes in the developer, and still not get good results when printing on RA-4 paper. ECN-2 is designed to create a curve that compliments the color-contrast on ECP print film. Whereas CineStill is designed to do exactly what Doing Film Things did. When you process in ECN-2 and then try to print on color paper it is a muddy mess. Scanning gives you some more control with the curves, so you can probably get satisfactory results with cross processing, but nothing as beautiful as you see here.

Thanks for the insight! There is a lot of mystery out there online about these subtle details. This is very interesting and will certainly inform my experiments. Looking forward to seeing the differences between said processes 😀

CineStill Film Hi, I never suggested that processing Kodak Vision 500T in C-41 is the same as processing Cinestill 800T. I only recommended that Ribs (or anyone reading my comment) develop genuine Kodak Vision film stocks (500T, 200T, 250D, 50D) in ECN-2 _instead_ of C-41. Ribs went on to make that mistake in a subsequent video and he did not like the results. I tried to save him the effort because I’ve personally done both and I will stick to ECN-2 from now on. You made an interesting point about darkroom printing from an ECN-2 negative. I have not tried this (yet) because I have only just learned how to do black and white prints at home. There doesn’t seem to be much info about darkroom printing ECN-2 film on the web so I’m wondering if you’re open to publishing your results/sharing some of those comparison prints you did? It would be helpful for the community to have that reference in a post or forum somewhere permanent. Also, you would have another selling point for 800t fans - assuming any are interested in printing.

I watch so many photography videos on here, and this is my first time seeing yours. This has so much more to offer than like 95 percent of them! Major respect for manual printing, but also just going through the whole thing and showing that it does require work and effort and trial and error. Too many people leave that stuff out and just want to seem slick. This is great. Your shots are gorgeous, but those printing skills are on another level. New subscriber. New Instagram follower. Very excited to see what you do next.

Wow, this is insane, great prints! I was always a bit hesitant to try color printing, but you made it look so easy! On which temperature do you keep your chemicals?
@ribsy4 жыл бұрын
thanks for watching 😊 def give it a try, its honestly not too bad. in terms of temp, i honestly don't track at all. i heat them up an hot water bath (not measured) to start but then don't do anything further. in fact, my blix doesn't even live in a water bath after the initial heating. its honestly annoying to know that so many people use to say "if you can't control temp, don't even bother" - they were all wrong! 😅🤟🏽
@KarinMajoka4 жыл бұрын
Doing Film Things wow, I am literally blown away right now, because I totally thought you have to be very very precise with the temperature. But it’s so encouraging to hear that this is not the case and you can still get great results without being too perfectionist about it. Thank you! ✌🏼

If you're not a fan of the halation, you can probably give actual vision 3 500t a go. NTphotoworks here in the UK sell all the kodak vision stocks for cheap, way cheaper than cinestill. I've gone the route of winding my own from 400ft cans. If you self dev the bellini ecn-2 kits are about £30 or so, or you could cross process in c41 to get the colour shifts that 800t gets. Silverpan and NT develop them, but for a bit of an upcharge compared to C41, and you seem to be kitted out to do all this on the cheap.
@ribsy4 жыл бұрын
hey - thanks for commenting. i actually just purchased a bunch of kodak 250D from NT. i shot one roll already but haven't developed since I don't have any chems of any sort right now. i saw on Eduardo Pavez channel that he simply does a special wash of the film to remove most of the remjet and then does normal c41. i think i'm gonna try that after i get new chems
