This fight doesn't get enough credit. People talk about the Duel of the Fates fight but this was the first lightsaber duel we'd seen in 16 years (since Vader vs Skywalker in RotJ) and this fight changed the expectation of what lightsaber duels looked for the whole rest of the franchise. More speed, more aggression, more movement.

Rebels has fights with that slower style, and its balanced pretty well, definitely sword samurai in the OT vs. Sword Ninjas in the prequels, but I think they are both important for what they story is trying to tell. Fast paced lightsaber fights usually accompany more action packed versions of their movies. Slower ones seem to accompany slower and more build up based plots.

Great scene. Maul was originally supposed to jump after Qui-Gon and they fight on the ramp of the ship for a few seconds before Qui-Gon kicks him off. I met Nick Gillard back in 2000, he choreographed all the fights, and he told me that for this scene he'd pitched the idea to Lucas of Maul charging at Qui-Gon with the speeder, but Qui-Gon sidesteps and strikes the engine with his sabre, setting it on fire and causing Maul's cloak to catch alight, then Maul leaps off and continues to fight Qui-Gon whilst on fire. George gave a WTF type look and said "It's for kids!". I actually think it would have been awesome but I still like the scene as is. A great tease for the wonderful fight that came at the end of the film.

Haha I love how George's logic works sometimes. He literally added a character like Jar Jar to the series, yet this idea of a bit more dramatic and spectacular fight is "for kids" 😂 still like that fight as it is - fast, intimate, with no clear winner. Essentially the Emperor ate an apple whilst fighting Maul's apprentice with one hand then said, "I'm done with this apple, and I'm done with you." So I think the Emperor stabs Maul's apprentice maybe... But then he force pushes him off the ledge they we're fighting (Emperor force pushed the f*ck outta Maul before this "sequence" and knocked him out temp.) Then Maul wakes up, and looks at the Emperor, then shuts off his lightsaber and jumps down to his apprentice, and his apprentice said, "I'm sorry brother I'm not as strong as you..." (Even though Maul's apprentice was physically bigger than Maul) then Maul with all his rage, and effort goes back to the Emperor and attempts to f*ck him up... But the Emperor changed his fighting style, that or he saw an opening and use force lightning against Maul. And as Maul laid on the ground being tortured by force lightning the Emperor says, "I won't kill you... something, something, something... You're coming back with me." and Maul's on his knees, and he says "No please have mercy!" It's debatable whether Maul was actually meaning, "Kill me here please!" or, "Please no! Don't torture me again! I can't handle it!" Then the Emperor continues to use force lightning on Maul then the scene pans out, and fades to black whilst the Emperor is still torturing him... But after that! Maul's a badass who never talks cause of his pain, and suffering he went through with Sidious (Now I remember his name.).

If you think about it Qui-gon should have had a slight advantage in this scene. He practiced form 4 which is aggressive and implements force augmented movements into the fight. With the openness of the desert, this would have been the perfect opportunity to use it. On the other hand, this speaks to the credibility of Maul being one of the most aggressive and skilled duelists in SW. He keeps Qui-gon on the defensive and limits his ability to augment his movements with the force. But, this initial engagement would also be Qui-gon's downfall. Maul recognized what Qui-gon's form was which is why he separates Kenobi and Qui-gon in the final duel and confines Qui-gon to a small space. Maul might be arrogant, but he is a true strategist.

He was also ambushed out of nowhere and Maul took the fight to him. It was only natural for Qui Gon to fight defensively once a devil faced Sith Lord comes out of nowhere and rushed you. The first one in over a thousand years nonetheless. My point is I don't think Qui Gon had a choice

I think the novel described Qui-Gon destroying one of the spy drones Maul sent to look for him while he was in town with Anakin. He deduced something was very wrong and insisted they get off world ASAP, as such he was on high alert the whole way back to the ship. Whether they made mention he had noticed the presence of the Dark Side or not I can't remember.

It was the time when CGI really took off. If you remember, the prequels, especially Episode 3, were accused of overdoing it with the CGI. All the time so far the budget was the limiting factor to how much and how fancy CGI you could spoil your audience with. Finally we had reached the point where the sheer amount was not seen as adding to the quality of the movie any more.

Yes he is better. Everyone is better than a self trained Vader wannabe. This is the whole point of Kylo Ren. We are in an era where only 1 jedi reminds and (for what we know), no other force users. In the land of the blind, kylo Ren is the king. Some people wonder why Maul was only using one blade. He was actually testing Qui-Gons ability. He had no intention of killing Qui-Gon then and there. Maul is a master assassin, and quite patient for a Sith Lord.

Right. Case point, if you noticed he pauses twice when he could’ve had 2 easy kill strikes if he truly wanted to. The first is when Qui Gon radioed to the ship telling the pilot to take off. The second is when Qui Gon stopped to see how close the ship was so he could time his jump perfectly for the get away. I feel this more otherworldly than Villeneuve's Dune, which is indeed more crafted and perfectly shows the skill of its director, but in a way that looks more like scenery of a theater or art (i.e. no real) than real. I love the textures in Darth Maul's bike and everything looks both alien and real. I say this because this simple movie, imperfect and all, feels more real and original than most of cinema today, including works like the last Dune.

The answer above and that Obi-Wan didn't know that Maul was a Sith, I think he asks Qui-Gon after the fight what it was. So he probably didn't know. As you said they have been extinct for a millenia, so he had clue how they looked..

I had a Lego set of this scene! I remember how badass Darth Maul felt with that speeder of his, even as just a Lego. 😁 But what is strange is that I remember having a comic book version of Episode 1 and I think that this fight was depicted in a bit different way in it. 🤔

I really like how Darth Maul is only using one side of his lightsaber. That would have made the reveal of the double-sided saber much better if they HADN'T SHOWN IT IN ALL OF THE TRAILERS.

+CornyEverything From a story perspective, Maul just had to get chopped in half. I mean if Maul survives he otherwise defeats Obi-wan(not necessarily kill) and stops the Queen from capturing the Viceroy, or he runs off and is called out as a punk ass bitch who can't fight and is a coward. Obi-wan killing Maul not only stops the villain while maintaining said villains bad assery, but also allows Obi-wan to attain the rank of Jedi Knight and train Anakin. The only thing they really could have done better was give him some more lines and air time, maybe replace some of the Sidious scenes with Maul. Also they brought Maul's back from the dead in The Clone Wars cartoon and he's actually set to make an appearance in Star Wars Rebels.

I love this scene because it is the first time the Sith reveal themselves to the Jedi in over a thousand years. He did it out of nowhere and with no exchange of dialogue. Badass.
