So as someone who has probably heard 95% or more of Daryl's interviews, I think I can add some perspective to what might appear to be him discrediting John here. First, Maher needed to be more specific when asking about things in terms of time, like Daryl said at the end " Oh you're talking about the OLD days"....What we need to realize is that it has been almost 40 years since Daryl and John actually sat in a room with guitars/piano and wrote a song together. It may not feel that way to us because we still love the music like it was written yesterday, but for Daryl, that was 2 or maybe 3 lifetimes ago. Think of it like a marriage and the songs were the kids ( Daryl has used this analogy before). They got married, had all these kids, grew apart, but still care for each other and have to still remain " together" to help keep the kids safe, taken care of ect.....So there is that part The real issue here, and what I hear in many of Daryl's interviews, is a confusion/anger that he was never taken seriously as a solo artist, and least not in the way he wanted. Just look at what he has witnessed. Michael Jackson, Don Henley, Phil Collins, Sting, George Michael, Jon Bon Jovi, Rob Thomas, and more, all split from their original groups and found, in some cases, more success solo than with the original groups. So from Daryl's POV, he must be like WTF? Why did I get so ignored? To the point that his best album, IMO, Can't Stop Dreaming, was basically ignored until it was re-released AFTER Hall & Oates were back together with Do It For Love. Only THEN was that album even recognized, and it did spur a few AC/Jazz hits...So I 100% forgive his hurt, and he is clearly hurt, that when he tried to go solo he was never really given the time of day or promoted properly, and only after each time he would go running back to John, did he have success. He is human, and that would wear on any of us. Lastly, some of what you see here is memory loss. Daryl has never had a good memory because he is always in the now. I have NEVER , and I have seen at least 30 in person, I have NEVER seen a H&O show where he did not screw up the lyrics at least once, you just come to expect it lol. Also, many times his stories are different or confusing from one interview to the next. I have heard him say that Jon Bon Jovi did an excellent job on So Close, and I have also heard him say he ruined the song. Yes, we all know that he was divorced before his ex wife died, but you can tell by the look in his eyes that he still loved her, and most likely their parting was similar to how he parted with Sarah, who said " I know he still loves me, but he just can't be with me" or something close to that. You can tell by the way he speaks about Tommy, Clive and others that he feels cheated somehow, that he feels he should have been able to have equal success solo as he did with H&O. And really , who can blame him? Just listen to any of Soul Alone or Can't Stop Dreaming and you wonder how in the HELL did these albums flop and not produce hits? It seems it was all political and business related, and not really related to the music. Labels wanted so badly to protect the H&O brand that they ignored Daryl. He even said once "we work together because the world forces us to". If you watch enough of his interviews you realize he has some deep wounds, and a love/hate relationship with almost every MALE he interacts with ( a few exceptions) and speaks very fondly and lovingly about all of the women in his life. I think John knows him, and will just take this interview as Daryl being Daryl. Anyway, just my two cents.

@Flying Fluffy Hockey Being a huge fan of Hall & Oates, I totally agree with everything you said. "Can't Stop Dreaming," IMO, was his best solo album, which he recorded in Japan. It wasn't released in the US until later, so my husband had to order it from Japan. Watched them so many times, even in smaller venues around Southern California. The last count was 25 times. I will never tire of watching them live, even with the same setlist. 🧡🙂

The thing I admire about Daryl Hall is that his hits have withstood the test of time. Songs like "I Can't Go For That" and "Sara Smile" still sound as fresh today as they did from my car radio back in the day. I never would have guessed that as they were straight up pop and most all pop has a very short shelf life.

What is Daryl talking about that he and John don't have a "creative partnership"? Nevermind all the songs that they wrote *together* -- "She's Gone", "Out of Touch", etc. -- it was fairly common knowledge that they would help each other arrange and shape the songs that they wrote separately. And they produced all of their 80s albums together. If that's not a creative partnership, then wtf is?

My band opened 60 shows for Hall & Oates in ‘77 and ‘78. It was during their comparatively commercially lean period of ‘Beauty On A Back Street’ and ‘Along The Red Ledge’ albums. I used to watch them from sidestage, night after night, as Daryl would never sing a song the same way two nights in a row. He is a true soul singer of the highest order, black or white. All Daryl said here was that he and John are now just business partners, in the H&O brand. It’s a touring brand only at this point, and it pays bills for both of them. They’re not creative partners in the songwriting/arranging/recording/producing sense. It wasn’t mean. It was just the facts. Having said that, Daryl is rather aloof and he does have an ego, and there’s nothing wrong in that. I’ve yet to meet many highly successful people who aren’t that way. It’s more than often part of the equation that makes them so great to begin with. I must add that John was a very friendly and accommodating touring partner. Good guy. Daryl is very private.

Very cool! I saw them in the mid 70's just as Sara Smile was breaking. I had been a fan for almost a year at that point. The first H&O album I bought was Abandoned Luncheonette, I immediately went out and bought Whole Oats. They were different and special, I told everyone about them. That mid 70's concert was on Long Island, my GF and future wife wasn't too familiar with H&O and she wasn't feeling too great (her period), anyway, within 20 minutes she forgot about her headache and pain, it was better than any Midol pill, LOL! When Daryl was singing Sara Smile he sat at the edge of the stage and he had that entire audience in the palm of his hand, it was a terrific concert! You were very fortunate to have played on the same billing with them.

I agree he is a wonderful man. As a kid I somehow found myself backstage at a huge show in Ohio because of my fathers association with the promoter. I saw a little argument with him and one of the guys from AWB. I think he was the leader not sure but it began harsh but two level headed men were able to stifle it before it got nasty. Maurice White from EWF and Leroy Sugarfoot Bonner from the Ohio Players. Had nothing to do with anything musical but back in the mid 70s people seemed to be less arrogant and more willing to let things go. They just dont make men like this anymore. Great post, loved reading it.

His wife divorced him after a short marriage and either drowned or OD in a bath tub. He had all those musicians on his Live from Daryl's house then turned around and got ton's of money for those shows. Did he pay any of those musicians for their appearance.???? Daryl is a genius, but he should be kinder to John. Sure, Daryl is the ‘leader’, and it’s main reason for success, but you cannot ignore John’s contributions to songs such as You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling. To be known as the greatest pop duo in history isn’t such a bad thing. Daryl had his shot with his solo stuff, and while Dreamtime is a great record, it didn’t hit, and it rankles Daryl, but Ce La Vie. Sometimes life isn’t fair, but be grateful for what you have and not what you could’ve had. PS: listen to their criminally underrated record ‘Change Of Season’. I think it’s their best.

Something must of happened between Daryl and John within the past year or so. When Daryl was on Howard Stern in 2007 and 2011 he had the most wonderful things to say about John as well as other interviews he did. He gave John credit where credit was due. If you look at the Hall & Oates concert reviews for 2021 or so, it seems like there were feuding then. Maybe it’s the alcohol talking in this interview and or he’s turning into a grumpy old man? His interviews on Stern he was pretty witty and funny and the only really bad thing he had to say was talking about deer and ticks 😂

Darryl is an amazing artist and one of the best vocalists of his generation. And he still Has it! He epitomizes the Philly Sound. One of my favorite tunes is Darryl and John performing the Billy Paul classic “Me and Mrs Jones” live! Unbelievable! only thing better than listening to it is watching the live performance. Hall could've expressed his feelings towards Oates' contributions in countless ways other than significantly belittling John's artistic contributions to the partnership. Or stayed away from the booze if it makes him a mean drunk. Doubt it will happen but Maher should interview Oates as a follow-up. Maybe John would address Daryl's insults; maybe he wouldn't. But he at least deserves an opportunity to do so.

So glad to hear today Daryl is suing John. Like in my original comment which I'm reposting, Daryl shouldn't have to be always be asked about John. They were mere business partners, back in the day, listen to those songs & the ones Daryl does solo. It is so obvious Daryl composed the lyrics then & now. With the Allen sisters early on. I think Daryl was kind to add John's name as a simple courtesy. But as always, the road to hell is paved with good intentions, or in this case rightful litigation...... I can't believe the way Maher spoke to Daryl. It was an interrogation not an interview. Very uncomfortable to watch. Especially if like me, you adore Daryl & his music career. The whole mocking him "when you're a rock star" or "that of course, I'm sure you do" nonsense. Saying "your wife died, I don't know how I avoided knowing that"?! OMG how insensitive! He was snide, berading, condescending, rude, obnoxious & insulting non-stop. The "aren't you Jewish"?! The innuendo surrounding Daryl refusing a joint "right, you've matured". Maher was clearly out of line & was too stoned to be nice. "You really sound good at your age...which is really a good feat" & proceeds to praise Sinatra's music, never mentioning age....."even though you're in the rock era, you can appreciate a Sinatra" More than 11 minutes of Sinatra talk, that I did not tune in to hear. He was attacking & setting up Daryl any opportunity he could. "Ooh look what I stumbled into" bringing up John Oates. The whole "partner" part when it is clear Daryl has been solo for years. Did Maher do any homework for this? Why was that said? How he tried to manipulate the conversation to any topic he wanted to speak of; sex or cities Daryl preferred. "I'm guessing but I'm not a rockstar". The incessant gouging. Daryl should have been allowed to finish thoughts/sentences without being constantly interrupted. I don't care about Maher's personal likes of music, & I would have much rather heard about the box of thousand cassettes Daryl had, that would have been a good topic. Nope Maher says Japan & says some babble about "I have a similar experience" what??? Maher was always ready to pounce on Daryl for anything. The smirks and constant underlying current of jealousy was clearly evident. Maher kept chiding him & trying to get a reaction about anything. Why bring up Paul Simon or Covid when you can talk about all the music & the history of the guest you are interviewing. How did Maher not know Sara Allen co-wrote most of the songs? Anyone can look that up. "I don't know what you have 20 giant hits or something"? And Daryl graciously even brought his own liquor and offered it to Maher. Most cringe-worthy "you're on the stud farm & that's where you belong" Perhaps if Maher wasn't so high & drunk on tequila he would have been a better host. Maher just wouldn't shut the hell up. If I was Daryl, I would have got up, flipped off Maher & left.

Big H+O fan. H is a difficult interview. Maher handled it poorly. Didn't do his homework, focused on a meaningless short term marriage and didn't know his wife died. Had him defending his culture/religion (complete incorrect assessment on Methodism). H likes talking about his restoration projects, Philly music history (not Sinatra) and how he made records. Maher put words in his mouth about John and triggered him say things he is probably regretting. He didn't want to discuss Clive but got pushed and basically said I know Clive better than you and he is an a*hole. Maher finally played an ace card and complimented a newer song (but went overboard and claimed he listened to it all the time). I like some of Maher's commentary on his show, but he is a bad interviewer. It is a gimmicky setup, and I assume a tactic is to get people sloshed to reveal things. I couldn't tell if Maher was deliberately trying to pis* him off to get answers. Those methods can't last long term. I don't plan on watching anymore, with him getting high and rambling like a 16 yr old. I really wanted to learn something about one of the most fascinating artists, who set the tone for 80s pop. Missed opportunity (no pun).

I agree and many others have commented that Daryl is putting down John Oates more than he ever has in an interview. John is very much a huge part of the duos legacy. John co-wrote most of their hits and you wouldn't have those smooth harmonies without John as evidenced by their live shows as well as the records. Daryl's solo work is decent enough, but didn't have the huge and lasting impact as his work with John. And that could be why he is a little more bitter in his old age. Daryl Hall isn't Jeff Lynne. He can't do it all.

Wow didn’t think about it in that way! True he really didn’t have the success as a solo artist as he did with oats. Completely thought so highly of him on every level until this interview. Growing up listening to Benny Goodman sounds amazing to me. The 20th century is notable, and will eventually be an historical landmark, insanely rich and varied in the development of music, with the advent of recording to the ubiquitous availability we now have.... Music is life

He seemed really resentful about his "brother" Oates, which is weird. If you are a true fan, you know that Hall wrote, or was the primary writer, of most of their hits. And there are songs credited only to Oates which are great too. I have to say, I am a big fan, but this interview made me like him a bit less.

Daryl Hall still looks great and is very smart. He is highly educated ..attended Temple University and has devoted his life to music. While other Artists got involved in the drug booze scene he had the brains to keep on making good music while keeping his feet on the ground. Seems to me that he is a product of his environment..good family with sensible values. I think he is the greatest voice of our generation and loves to perform. What a treat for all of us. Years and years of great music

So...i have always been a fan so it was a thrill to have the opportunity to work with John setting up co writing sessions in Nashville, John co wrote If a Promise Ain't Enough with 2 members of Little Texas. That song had a huge impact on their careers. D was not in the room. If JO wrote more with the A team writers, he would have many more hits.

Hall had a #5 hit in 1986 as a solo artist. Oates had a #7 hit in 1987 as a solo artist. And Oates' song was actually more popular worldwide. So it's clear Oates was equally as effective as Hall.

Love John Oates, but no, he had no such hit as a solo artist ever. It was never an equal partnership in terms of talent, but that doesn't mean they were not equally important. Oates did a lot to ground Hall and without him, Hall may have gone down artistic holes that would have derailed his success. The main reason Hall and Oates lasted for a lifetime as a commercial act is because John Oates knew his role and did not let his ego prevent him from being in that role.

What exactly is the name of is that mysterious 1987 hit from John Oates? There's no reference to it on his Wikipedia page. Did you make this up? There's no excuse for someone fabricating a "fact" out of thin air simply to support a belief or theory. Although we live in a world where a lot of people do such things, because there is often money to be made by lying. If you can reply to my comment with the name of this mysterious hit song, I will stand corrected.

@@Paulcitomusic I suspect the original poster, misguided as the claim is, must be referring to the Icehouse track, "Electric Blue" which was an international hit in 1987, including hitting #7 on the US Billboard charts. Oates sang backup on the track, and received a co-writing credit. Obviously this is far from it qualifying as a solo hit.

@@samesource Ah ok, thanks for the reply. I guess that is something truth-ish he wrote then. But he's still in this case misrepresenting something factual and being at least a little disingenuous. Maybe he should get into politics.

@@Paulcitomusic Would have been better to say Oates "had a hit without Hall" for sure. It wasn't an Oates solo hit...but he did have a major role in it as songwriter/vocalist/arranger in collaboration with Icehouse (and just to keep apples to apples, ""Dreamtime" was produced with David Stewart and cowritten with John Beeby...so it was poorly stated, but the main point isn't far off). Interestingly, they both each had minor hits after that...Hall with "Foolish Pride" and Oates dueting with Canadian band The Parachute Club with "Love Is Fire."
