Accurate 😂 the crew would often paint their own vehicles in the field and multiple times throughout the year and no two would be the same

Hi Nigel, your tank is looking great. I like your paint job. Your scenario sounds plausible to me!!! Those powders work great, I'm going to have to give them a try. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. Jeff

I like the look of the gun metal pigment! To get a similar effect, you can use pencil lead. I bought a pack of woodless graphite pencils with different grades of lead. Then I file a little off into a mixing cup and apply it with a cotton bud whenever I need that worn metal sheen.

I'm glad you mentioned this. I was going to say it, but was aware that I would get a million health and safety messages telling me I shouldn't do that..

Damn, this is so inspiring! It’s almost convinced me not to wait for the Panzer III but to go out and buy the Stug NOW! The III is not yet on the shelves here in Oz!

The Stug looks awesome, Nigel. Maybe build another one and paint it in a ‘Mr. Blobby’ scheme!! Be careful if you do, I’m sure you wouldn’t wish to give the accuracy geeks too many sleepless nights!!🤣👍

Lovely wear and tear representation there, Nigel. I agree with you that "less is more" in that department. One recommendation I've seen for the application of pigments, Amazon sell make up (eye shadow) applicators which are in effect cotton buds but with sponges instead of fluff. £5 for a bundle of 50.

Nigel those tracks look great and as far as weathering goes less is often better IMHO. In the end if it makes you happy that is what counts. Now on the other hand when it comes to flaps….we’ll………

Brilliant Nigel, I am really enjoying this series. It's a beautiful kit and model. This is going to turn out so awesome. What you are doing (dark yellow over dark grey) is certainly plausible from 1943-on for vehicles produced before that. Stug IIIs (and any AFVs) produced from mid 1940 to early 1943 were painted in solid dark grey. As an aside, It was standard for vehicles produced in grey to be covered with '41 or '42 DAK yellow (and ~1/3 corresponding camo complement) as they went down to tropical campaigns. It was common for units to re-coat/camouflage their armour prior to the fall of 1944, when it was directed by RAL for paint schemes to be provided by the factory. A Stug III produced before early 1943 and serving between then and fall of 1944 would be expected to have a new colour or camo scheme based on dark yellow. Cheers mate!

Thanks for your comment John.. so, my scheme is actually plausible then.. like they were low on paint so threw it on thin.. like...

very nice looking model nige!! As far as im aware german tank tracks were made of a high manganese steel and therefore did not easily or quickly rust, it would take about 70years sitting out in the elements unused to actually go rusty 👍
@Andy.Gledhill.Models.

Another good one Nigel. Thanks for the shout out. I love the fact that you said you didn't think the tracks wouldn't rust much. Then you went and splattered rusty pigments all over them lol. I actually disagree with you on that. I think they would get rusty. But obviously not on all the running faces.
@NigelsModellingBench
@NigelsModellingBench 2 жыл бұрын
The pigments I used were all earth colour Andy, apart from the one rust colour that was used to represent red brown earth. Honestly, look at reference pics Andy, they don't rust heavily at all. just take a look at tracked vehicles on building sites..
@Andy.Gledhill.Models.
@Andy.Gledhill.Models. 2 жыл бұрын
@@NigelsModellingBench Aye, well, its no good looking on building sites. Most modern tracks are made of stuff that doesn't rust. It was different back in the 40's. The track links were probably made of cast iron. I doubt they would have been steel. But then again, even steel rusts over time. But its hard to find good colour reference photos from the war. BTW, I like those pigments. I just ordered a couple of sets lol.

Who's to say that no Stug III was ever repainted in the field ? In any case, it's your model; paint it how you like. It's your choice whether you're building it as a rivet counter looking to make it as close to 100 % accuracy as you can or NOT. Why is this a problem for some people ?

Nigel there is a video of Stugs in column painted dark yellow on their way to Africa to fight for Rommel.
@willthorson4543
@willthorson4543 2 жыл бұрын
They didnt use Gs in Africa. And the color was an odd really light brown. The German military actually sent tanks and stugs to the Caucasus that were supposed to go to Africa so you have really bright armor on a open steppe. So the crews added dark grey paint as camo to the bright yellowish brown. Probably the only time that happened.. German grey was really dark and in the Ukraine/ Crimea area they really stood out.

I find it funny that the sheer amount of corrections you do on kits, some things so tiny. People can't see it and this kit, with huge errors you ignore. Haha.
@NigelsModellingBench
@NigelsModellingBench 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not aware of any errors on this, and am not particularly interested in the subject, so probably wouldn't bother correcting them anyway?
