Racing games. Because in between matches on the cab in the arcade, we'd also get some runs in on Initial D, Maximum Tune or Daytona.

I love 2D action platformers, like the Mega Man, Castlevania and Metroid series. I play Dr. Mario 64 against my mom, usually handicapping myself to play at virus level 20 while my mom plays on virus level 14. Sometimes we play other old school puzzle vs games like Tetris, Pac-Attack, Kirby’s Avalanche, and Pokemon Puzzle League. But we have just been addicted mostly to Dr. Mario. The speed and momentum of it feels kinda like a fighting game. I bet I’d love Puzzle Fighter.

From Soft games and Crosscode for singleplayer, though Crosscode is somewhat adjacent to both shmups and beat-em-up games (even has a scored arcade mode style optional section in the post-game); RTS games for multiplayer. I've even randomly gotten into conversations about obscure RTS games at fighting game majors because someone else there brought them up, so I don't think I'm alone on that one

I think fighting game players are probably drawn to mechanically interesting games and good character designs.

DMC has a built-in fighting game mechanic, you can do combos with it just like a fighting game
@gangofheroesАй бұрын
Well DMC is basically just a Beat'em Up/Hack n Slash/Shoot'em up hybrid which are all sibling genres with fighting games being birth around the same time by the same people.
@theuzi8516Ай бұрын
DMC3, the start of modern DMC, was designed explicitly with SF3, MvC2 and CvS2 in mind. Itsuno has an interview talking about how his involvement in FGs informed his deaign decisions on DMC3. He even calls Swordmaster the MvC2 style and Royal Guard the SF3 style. (Trickster is DMC1 and Gunslinger is "Dante".)

Lots of fighting game players also enjoy turn-based JRPGs. That's why several of them were used as a basis for fighting games, like Persona 4 and Granblue.

I think that an important link between fighting games and beat-em-up games is the fact that Final Fight, the father of the beat-em-up genre, initially started out as a sequel to the original Street Fighter.
@ShinUltima27 күн бұрын
Not sure I'd call _Final Fight_ "the father of the beat-em-up genre". Not only was FF not the first beat-em-up, it wasn't even the first mega-hit beat-em-up (pretty sure that was _Double Dragon_ ). Not that FF wasn't massively influential, but it wasn't to beat-em-ups like SF was to fighting games (there were fighting games before SF2, but they were largely irrelevant, including SF1).

As a fan of oldstyle 2d fighters, you nailed the reasons why I'm also into Ninja Gaiden and beat'em ups!
@ShinobiX8Ай бұрын
Pretty insane how Hideki Kamiya the creator of Devil May Cry wasn't even a fighting game fan and still created the greatest action game series ever, twice.
@pppp-by1bq29 күн бұрын
DMC1 has people with experience in fighting games. Even the people who were making fighting games at SNK. Also, almost all 3D action games are derived from fighting games or beat'em up. Modern action games tend to have less of an arcade essence and more emphasis on realism, so it's hard to feel a connection, but their origins can be traced back to fighting and beat'em up.
@ShinobiX829 күн бұрын
@ Beat em ups for sure, Kamiya loves his arcade games, don't think gives a rats about fighting games. I believe he name dropped Onimusha and Resident Evil is the obvious one. But yeah it's interesting how DMC came into existence by a guy who knows the in's and outs of action games with seemingly minimal fighting game experience.
@pppp-by1bq28 күн бұрын
@@ShinobiX8 Besides Kamiya-san, other fighting game developers also played important roles in Devil May Cry. For example, someone who was involved in "KOF" at SNK was heavily involved in the action motions of Devil May Cry. Similarly, action games such as God Hand also involve Capcom and former SNK arcade game developers. Incidentally, Devil May Cry was heavily influenced by the combat design of Ocarina of Time. Kamiya himself spoke about this in detail in 2001. Tecmo also said that the Ninja Gaiden reboot was heavily influenced by the combat design of Ocarina of Time.
@ShinobiX828 күн бұрын
@ Makes sense, Kamiya's favorite game seems to be A Link to the Past. As for the KOF guy, KOF derived from SF1 and SF1 derived from A Beat Em Up. No doubt working on fighting games helped but I think Beat Em Ups had more intentional influence on DMC than fighting games did.
@pppp-by1bq28 күн бұрын
@@ShinobiX8 It's not just DMC, Ocarina of Time's combat design had a huge influence on the 3D action genre, along with fighting and beat'em ups. And as I've said many times before, modern 3D action game design, including DMC, is unavoidably influenced by fighting games and beat'em ups. (That's what Capcom itself says.) In the first place, Street Fighter 2, which is the foundation of the fighting game genre, is based on Final Fight (and SF1), which solidified the basic design of Beat'em Up.(To be fair, there would be no Final Fight without SNK's POW. The game designs for Final Fight and POW are based heavily on Technos Japan's Kunio-kun and Double Dragon.) Fighting games and belt-scroll action (beat 'em up) are sibling genres.

My most favorite franchises that are not fighting games: Witcher, GTA, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Batman Arkham, Command & Conquer, Starcraft, Warcraft, Star Wars KOTOR, Mass Effect, Halo, Persona, Devil May Cry, Diablo. Except for DMC, Batman and maybe Monster Hunter, these franchises have nothing in common with fighting games. Although I've liked these franchises for much longer than when I've got into fighting games.

I think it's worth looking at whether there is a link between fav FG and what non-FGs someone plays. People I know who dislike FromSoft games also aren't that big on post-IV Street Fighter, for example, but almost all who like UNI also play DMC. The inverse isn't true, btw--peeps I know who are DMC fiends tend to like faster FGs (ans play a wider variety of FGs) while FromSoft fiends I know mostly stick to the newest SF.

Unfortunately, even though fighting games and beat'em up laid the foundation for all action games, the former are more complex and harder to learn than most 3d action games, and the latter are relatively niche. Japan, now a nation of mobile games, has recently started making 3d action and fighting games again, but beat'em up has almost completely stopped making both 2d and 3d games. It is a pity that God Hand and others were not understood by the Westerners of that era and were beaten to a pulp.(The 2000s was a time when JRPGs, and other Japanese games in general, began to be viewed with hostility in the West.)
