@@DavidBournePhotoandVideo Basically, you just need to know your departure and destination. Lean The Automatic Pilot, how to set your Altitude and for you to learn how to gain a certain altitude on Autopilot. Then, learn the The Nav button, which puts you on your flight course. Then, you need to set the Altimeter to lower to a certain altitude before hitting the automatic landing guide which doesn't actually land the plane. Of course, a tower may ask for you to change your heading or a new destination to land at. It gets a little complicated the more you get into it especially if you fly a Jumbo Jet and use The (FMS) Flight Management System. That is when you have to research and learn route codes or airway codes. Every Jumbo Jet has to follow flight Airways to travel, so that they don't bump into one another. Of course, some planes don't have any of that. Just a stick, rudders, and ailerons. Flying is easy.....Also, a person needs to learn how to use Trim, and even some planes don't even have that. Then, you are constantly pulling back on your joystick which is a pain in the butt. Oh...anyone can fly a damn plane. Can everyone understand Flight Controller Tower Lingo Requests is a different story. I like starting off from the parked position and taxing to the runway. It makes if feel more real. Of course, that isn't easy for everyone to do. Just start off simple, and learn the rest later. Just have fun with it. After all, you can't kill anyone in a Flight Sim.

@@DavidBournePhotoandVideo Heck, I have XPlane 11, and other Flight Sims in VR. Not as scenic as Microsoft, and they only plan on coming out with it in VR much later on from what I was told. Oh...that would be awesome if they were to do that sooner rather than later. Of course, computers can't really handle a game like that yet but eventually...I'm pretty sure that will change.

As for Squirrel, he likes all the games I like for instance, Euro Tricking Simulator and American Trucking Simulator. Of course, I was a trucker in real life. Even so, my direct ancestor is one of the reasons why we all have a U.S. 1st Amendment. Oh...long to explain that history is in order to explain. I flew a plane when I was 5 or 6 yrs old. Not alone...I just held the yoke. He said, "Don't worry!" Whatever mistake you do, I can get out of it. I got to turn the plane, go down and up. To me, I was flying in a Cessna. I couldn't reach the rudders, and my parents never knew I went up in an airplane with a stranger at a small airport in Bristol, CT. I was a brave little kid. A little escape artist. My mom couldn't keep me locked in any room. I was an explorer. One of my sisters complained that she found me 9 miles from home at 4 years old. I always made my way back home even when I traveled further than that. lol I rode a Big Wheel from Bristol, CT to Plainville, CT and then to Southington, CT, and back home. Ha...I can't imagine where I'd go if I could fly. Area 51 perhaps. lol Hey.....doesn't everyone want to know what they are hiding? lol

I've now flown it real time/real weather/no assists from my town in Missouri all the way around to Burma now. My only real scare was landing at Queenstown NZ. ATC tried to fly me into the side of a mountain. 😄

Seems the TBM 930 with its G3000 avionics is the best choice for IFR at the moment. I figured out most of the stuff myself, the UI is actually quite intuitive once you have a rough understanding of what's going on. For me the tutorial was at just the right level to improve my understanding of the systems. Thank you so much!

Congratulations Squirrel. Another well thought-out and condensed tutorial. Those new to this, he has covered a few hours of ground school and a few hours in the cockpit at a flying school all in 45 minutes. You might need to pause a lot to set this up on your own. Those commenting on the G1000 C172, it is similar in the PFD. Use the same procedures to get to that runway automatically. Try it with blue skies the first few times, then go nail-biting in the fog and see how you do. Thanks again Squirrel for a quality production. Your real CFI should be proud of you!

@@exiletsj2570 Yes that's correct. I believe you still need to be at the right altitude, but you'll see the ILS glide slope appear on your screen, and the plane should catch it as long as you intercept it by matching altitude.

@@DaiBach99 You can actually get it directly from the PFD in the TBM. You just have to search the airport's ICAO in the "waypoint finder" and there is a tab with all the frequencies for that airport including the ILS frequencies. If you click on one of the listings you are prompted to load the ILS directly into your active NAV 1 or 2 radio.

Squirrel, I have been loving your videos. I bought MS Flight Sim 2020 because I wanted to get back into “flying”. I was in the military for 25 years, flew MH-47Es and have about 5500 hours total, tandem rotor, multi-engine, instrument, and instructor pilot ratings. I am amazed how detailed this program is, som many of the avionics are working models, I just didn’t expect that. My problem now is I can’t find a hotas anyplace for a reasonable price. Can’t wait until I can get one. Keep the great videos coming. Thanks!

By far the TBM 930 is my favorite aircraft in FS2020. I love it's response..the technology is amazing for this size/type. It's fast and it gets you into the smaller airfields that I enjoy discovering. Not to mention how much fun it is. Thank you for the video. This is the most concise explanation so far. I like the idea of just putting the FIX point for the approach in the system instead of relying on the flight planning which sends you off on these crazy loops before approach.

Great tutorial Squirrel!!! I've been working through a number of ILS and RNAV tuts on YT recently and I'm still having only a 50% success rate - still shocked how buggy it all is in the sim. Great tutorial - especially helpful in making a little more sense of the airport charts and slowly things are starting to make sense. Keep up the good work!!

Thank you for your response. What you have to remember is most of us in the flight sim community are not professional pilots. I have belonged to my community for 12 years and we used to fly regularly and we were really excited about 2020 coming out but it has been a nightmare so far for some of us. The only thing I ask is slow down your cursor so we can see what you pushing and when. Yours and other videos HAVE been helpful so don’t think I’m mad at you, just frustrated. At 70 maybe this hobby has passed me by. But I just can’t quit without giving it my best shot. Thanks again for your response.

R/W commercial pilot here, just a tip though unless there's something TBM specific I don't know about you wouldn't disengage the y/d ever in flight, especially under manual control (I have many complaints from cabin crew to back this up when been forced to hand fly when the y/d was u/s 😃

Haven't got that many hours in this sim but have done a couple of ILS approaches in the TBM and CJ4, and wanted to make an interesting note. If you choose IFR in the flight planner you can actually select an ILS approach for the destination airport, and most, if not all, of the aircraft with glass cockpits will do most of it for you. In my experience they automatically fly the right course to the approach fix and switch from GPS to NAV1 when they cross it, all you have to do is turn on approach mode once you see that happen. Not sure if actual Garmins and such can do that, but for people new to ILS approaches (like myself) it can help with learning how they work.

I am a total newbie to this simulation game genre, but after following you and your tutorials now for the last two weeks I managed to complete the full balkan bush trip and did a 7h flight today from cairo to edinburgh in a dbm 930 with a perfectly fine ILS approach and an ok landing (I think). Please do a tutorial on the last 500ft till touchdown. How do I correct my level and my heading on the final minute? When do I use rudder, when do I use ailerons? That would be perfect! Thank you

Look up tutorials for "slipping" or "crabbing" an aircraft. These are techniques used when crosswinds are evident, followed by a slip correction slightly at about 20-50 feet above the runway to ensure your fuselage is lined up straight with the runway. I am a student pilot with 15 hours towards my PPL and this is something we study quite a bit. Let me know if you have any questions. Sidenote: I'm training for VFR. The ILS approach is completely new to me, but the hand flying in the final minute or so is completely the same as what I do.

The TBM930 is easily my favourite tool in the FS2020 hangar, but is a little more hands-on than the A320 Neo which does all this stuff for you. Been trying to make the AP intercept the glide slope for a little while. Now I know how. Thanks.

A few things I would like to see with future tutorials, if possible: 1) Mention what's essential and whats optional. In this case for example, only the localizer frequency is actually necessary for the procedure. Could confuse people when they only have a single frequency available and wonder where to get the second one. 2) Show where you get information and how to do the important parts clearly. For example, where did you get the Course from? Also you explained in detail how to change the wind settings and then quickly pressed the softkey to switch from GPS to NAV1 nav source, which is actually one of the most crucial steps for this. Your videos helped me a great deal when I started with this sim, so thank you for every one of it, just thought I'd leave some feedback that could help make them stand out even more.

Very good video. Good graphics, good pace, and you cover many of topics. Around 8:15, I like how you activate the DOGOV NT localizer, the NAV turns off heading, and then decides, no I need to stay on heading to align those needles.

This is really helpful. I have been using the TBM is the sim. I figured out how to fly IFR and using NAV on the autopilot to follow the FMS line, but I still haven't been able to figure out how to approach the runways at the right altitude. The AP has an approach button but I don't know what it does. Thanks for this.

Little nav map is also a good way to find ils frequencies on the go, just hover your mouse over the airport.

If I may comment, missed approach is done without autopilot, as it's dangerous under 500'. But the plate says it all and Squirrel setup the missed approach heading and ALT SEL ahead of time. Just like any missed approach, full power, positive climb, flaps up in increments. Fly runway heading until plate says to turn. In real life, if in doubt or slightly confused, ask the tower for help. Here, well, we are on our own.. . Keep in mind if it were below minimums you would already know that from the tower or NOTAM or weather report while you were on the glidescope and your flightplan has an alternate airport above minimums (in real life). Many of us have a personal mimimums (like 500 instead of 263) so we work with that. Give it a try... good luck.

I'm not sure that your terminology is correct. A missed approach is a procedure that is safe at any altitude. Even ten feet above the runway. In fact, there should be zero stigma attached to calling a go-around, by anyone on the flight deck.

I am not sure it will work with the Garmin system or in FS2020 for that matter. But I would try arming the approach mode before intercepting the localizer. With LOC and GS armed (white) it should then pick up the localizer and glideslope automatically (and turn green respectively). When the approach mode is armed you are free to use FMS or HDG to control the intercept, which is more user friendly than the method you showed.

The thing with Gear down on first dot is a thing that is different at every flight school. we do that until passing half dot before intercepting the GS and then flaps approach and Flaps full 1000ft above ground

It has lots of bugs. As a professional pilot I was disappointed with FS2020. The scenery aspect of the sim is amazing. The rest of it leaves lots to be desired. It's still ok for instrument approaches and procedures but as far as programming FMSs it's severely lacking.

Nice video. I really like this plane in MSFS. I think you could have stayed in HDG mode and clicked on APR mode and it would have flown the heading until DOGOV when it would have automatically picked up the LOC first then would have picked up the glide slope. But great vid.

Video suggestion, Squirrel: Many people are flying the TBM, including myself, and my landings; well, suck! A quick video (5:00), would really help clear up throttle, flap, trim, and approach angles for us. This plane is so quick to maneuver that I find I am borderline out of control the last 20 seconds and am slamming the plane down on the runway. Thanks in advance if you can show us how a professional sim pilot does it!

You can put the first notch of flaps in at 178 and then gear down (also up to 178) and then full flaps at 122. Approach speed should be 85 knots minimum. Your rate of descent on final at that speed should be around 400-500 feet per minute. Practice holding 85 knots at a higher altitude in that configuration in a 400-500 foot per minute descent. Control airspeed with pitch and control your rate of descent with power which is what you will be doing anyway until you're over the runway in the flare to landing. I hope that helps you out. The next tine I go into the sim (later today) I will look to see if the FPM decent number shows to the right of the altitude in the PFD. I have never used the FPM for landing. I have only noticed it while dialing in the VS numbers. So much to learn. Thanks again, Friend!

It is pleasure to hear you using the correct terminology. I am going to say you fly real airplanes as well! The real airplanes that I have been flying with FMS systems will auto tune the loc frequency automatically when selecting and ILS and slew the course needle. I am new to G3000 do you have to tune the Localizer frequency? On A CAT 1 ILS the baro setting for mins is the only acceptable means of identifying the MDA yes MDA in modern equipment not DH DH is decision height only use on CAT II approaches and lower. The Radout radar altimeter is for reference only on a CAT I approach. Yes this about flight sim hobbies and my statements maybe a bit deep in the weeds for swimming. In the real world this is serious 😁🛫

Great video as always! Just a quick question.. the extra work to use the VOR before the ILS.. is this just something you did for this specific airport? I generally just fly the fixes in GPS until I am at the GS fix and then activate APPR and let the magic of ILS happen. Then, kick it over to manual for the actual touch down. I like what you did here, and a good chance to learn something new.. just wondering if this over complicated it a bit? EDIT - I just re-watched.. and I think I understand now.. you are showing how to land with ILS, assuming no real approach, or flight plan has been entered into the FMS. Kinda like you were VFR and all of the sudden wanted to find, and land on the ILS of a given runway. This would be how to do it etc. Tho, for most all IFR flights all of this would be planned and apart of the approach fixes (which is why at first this made no sense to me) So, everything would be the same except the part of tracking the VOR. That would not be needed.

yeah this is driving me insane at the moment, especially since most airports are autogen and do not have the correct Jepperson information like gate and parking spot numbering. Even frequencies sometimes differ, and deffo also a lot of approach/departure patterns are missing or outdated. maybe time to pay-up and get Navigraph so i don't go fully mental.

Excellent, concise training video, many thanks. Speaking of ILS approaches, I installed the workingtitle G1000NXi and now MSFS stops responding on the approach. Total freeze up and I have to quit via task manager - so annoying. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Googling has not gotten me very far - thanks.
