A man risks his life for a human connection.
DATE NITE is used with permission from J.J. Shpall. Learn more at imdb.com/title/tt10983384.
Jon lives in a world where physical intimacy of any sort can lead to grotesque physical transformation, thanks to a virus that hijacks romantic desire.
But amidst this world, Jon is lonely and decides to risk his life for human connection, especially when he meets Maya, the only match he's made on his dating app. But things with Maya start to go wrong even before they officially meet, as the virus starts to wreak havoc on Jon's body.
This dystopian sci-fi romance -- directed by J.J. Shpall and written by Shpall and Eric Brewster -- takes a hypothetical question as a jumping point: what if there was a world where romantic love just couldn't exist? And is love worth the pain and agony it can spark within us when it doesn't work?
From there, the narrative travels to unexpected, unusual places, as it explores the fears and longings humans experience when it comes to the search for romantic connection. The tone is both quirky and melancholic, a mix also encapsulated by its visual approach, which is shadowy, yet with an antiseptic sheen that marks many modern sci-fi films. There is a studied distance in the visual compositions of the film, emphasizing a world where people keep one another at arms' length.
The storytelling builds a somber world grounded in dystopian vision, yet within this frame, characters still awkwardly bumble, freak out and overthink as they put themselves on the line for love. The collision of these emotions with this eccentrically conceived world is both ironically funny and thought-provoking, but the film has a steadiness that keeps the focus on human emotions and keeps it from veering into farce.
Many viewers will recognize much of the short's excellent cast, from SILICON VALLEY actor Josh Brener to Lauren Lapkus (from ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK) to even Larry Hankin (known to many FRIENDS fans as the downstairs neighbor Mr. Heckles). Collectively they're able to achieve a detached understatement in their performances that suits the film's tone, but they keep their pulse always on the genuine emotions of longing and loneliness that fuel the characters' arcs. All of these feelings keep the film emotionally grounded, and endow it with poignancy and resonance, especially as Jon finally goes on his much-longed-for date and achieves a connection -- though not quite in the way he expected.
DATE NITE was conceived of and made before Covid-19, but its release uncannily echoes the anxieties around physical contact, as well as the diffuse yet pervasive loneliness that happens with prolonged isolation. As a result, it may just be the first romantic comedy in the era of social distancing, and a line of dialogue like "You are not alone in your aloneness" can't help but take on new meaning.
But even before these times, DATE NITE captures the growing emotional distance between people and within themselves, whether it's via the perfunctoriness of a job or a certain flatness in connecting over an app instead of real life. In this gaping, arid space, it's easy for us to build expectations and ideas, only for real life to puncture them with imperfection. The only remedy may be a willingness to be brave about our vulnerabilities and longings, even just to ourselves. In risking our hearts for love and connection, we may go out on a limb (and even lose it) -- but we may gain the only thing that bridges the distance.

I liked this little short. I know its a bit on the nose with its metaphor, but I think it works. The society in the short cannot have romantic connections without people becoming damaged, so they take a suppressant. Some people can't take the loneliness in the safety and risk everything for human connection. Its pretty telling how valuable it is when he doesn't seem to regret what he lost.

i am super short but this is not the first time i can appreciate that these movies don't necessarely care for a beauty strict standard. humanity comes in all shapes, colors and kinds and they all fall in love and deserve love and can be the hero of a story, but media keep showing a narrow part of it as if all people should be like this or feel bad if they are not.

So, when you give yourself to someone, you loose part of yourself. The longer you're together, the less of you is left. And when that person leaves you for someone else (which they tend to do) you find you've lost the person you once were. Being alone doesn't mean you have to be lonely.

He's not alone: he has a loving animal companion. The human-animal connection is seen as a second-rate substitute, but animals don't let you down or disappoint you the way humans do. There's none of the ambivalence present in even the happiest relationship. They can't talk, but that's not always a negative--they communicate in other ways. Appreciate that cat.

You actually believe a pet gives a damn about you? A dog is just a predatory pack animal, stray packs of dogs in India attack their 'fellow' humans on a daily basis. Thousands of biting incidents reported, even more remain unreported, single owners who die in their house get eaten face up by their dog etc. I can keep going on. A dog might seem to care a bit about their owner, why?, because you provide it with food. It sees you as it's pack leader, nothing more. 'Trained dogs' are trained with food, nothing special about it. According to studies pigs are about 3 times as smart as dogs, which definitely doesn't come as a surprise. The behavior of a dog is all but intelligent. It's purely based on instincts. That's why they pee in the same spots as other dogs, eat feces grabbed out of the litter box of cats, bark incessantly at nothing or things they see on a daily basis, attack their owners (pack leaders) themselves, attack children that are playing on the street, ... Bring up the oxytocin myth all you want, that 1 single neurotransmitter, keep on mind oxytocin gets released when firing a gun as well... Only humans can be people. I'm vegan and even I don't buy into this pet crap. I see these beings for what they are. Pets do more harm then good. And if it stays with rabbits, goldfish, guppies, parakeets, parrots, turtles or something, ok. But the harm dogs, and even cats, cause to innocent humans & the environment (dog ownership is responsible for a fourth as much greenhouse gas emissions as all traffic worldwide combined, also numerous species die because of dogs, especially the situation in South America is staggering to think about) is unagreeable. That is, if you life in reality at least. Not an Omeleto based fantasy world where an inbred grey wolf or a feline is 'man's best friend'. The cortex regions of our brains are so complexly adapted, not even other great apes come close enough. There is no animal on Earth that can replace a human being. We need our own kind. Maybe some people are the exception but I'm almost certain +95% of all human beings need other human beings at some times in their existence, in order to be able to be healthy.

You don't know what is life and what is living if you thing that relationship defines it. To some extent you are correct, because human animals are divided into male and female but it is not everything, be-all, end-all. Some people like solitude. Some can have relationship and still feel lonely or empty inside. Anyway, life is crap, be it poor or rich. But rich at least can afford to live life on easy mode and they die like everyone else.

Actually, it’s Larry Hankin from Seinfeld, Malcom in the Middle, as well as “Breaking Bad” (in several episodes). AND I just found out that he’s also Mr. Heckles. Turns out he’s quite old and has been in a LOT of TV, films, and theatre. Multi-talented guy. Born in 1937, which explains quite a bit.

The moment the lady asks "how was it?" , the main character turns back and you can see his face/smile saying that it's the best thing he has ever lived, and that losing a leg is 100% worth it. The message is basically "take the risk, it IS worth it", except that we're not gonna lose our hair nor a leg by trying :)
