In this video we talk about dating a Malaysian vs. dating an American. Logesh is a Malaysian that moved to America, where he met Rachel, an American. We had to learn all the differences that came with dating cross culturally. We give our perspective on what it's like to date a Malaysian vs. an American. Through our time dating we figured out a cultural middle ground for many of our differences (except for wearing shoes in the house...there is no middle ground, never wear shoes in the house).
Watch this video to see how having a Malaysian date an American can truly bring up some comical situations, and how both Logesh and Rachel have thoroughly enjoyed learning more about each others' cultures.
Malay (Bahasa Melayu) and English subtitles available. Just click the CC caption or three dots in the video.

@@KumaarFamily we are living in Malaysia now. It was quite the culture shock. But now Malaysia is my home. How about the small expressions like 'off the light' instead of 'turn off the light'. 😅 My husband's first breakfast, I told him my mom was making biscuits and gravy. He replied, 'I'll just have bread with my gravy'. Biscuit is entirely a different concept.

I'm a malay Malaysian and I lived in Europe and had an American girlfriend. Once her family invited me for dinner and I met her dad (for the 1st time) and I was like "good evening, nice to meet u Mr XXX" and he was like "No please, call me Jack". I felt so uncomfortable because he kept insisting me calling him by his first name. Later on when I meet on him on occasion (we lived in a not so big town), I still call him Mr XXX. Reminds me of my PLKN(NS or National Service Day). We had 6 meal per day. DAMN! Too bad the next GEN wont be able to experience it. Even though some people believe they brainwash us ( which doesn't make sense to me ) but to me it kinda makes us unite as a Malaysian, but this is based on my experience.

Wow, over 52k subs and the Kumaars still reply to their viewers comments. Well done! Keep it up! Btw as someone who lived their whole life in Malaysia, I can totally relate with the food opinion. Can you imagine, training a child fasting without having any of those delicious food and kuih when they breaking the fast? For Malaysian food is not just for fuel, it was also for comfort and encouragement. It's our reward after a whole day of hard work.

We definitely try to respond to as many comments as we can, but it can get a bit difficult with taking care of two little ones! But thank you 😊 And yes! It’s so hard not having all the delicious food and kuih here in America. That’s why we’ve had to learn to make our own!

Omg, the the on the way is so classic of us... My sister always so that but she actually still at home! hahahaha. About the dinner, I found out about it long time ago that their supper is our dinner time. Gosh... I guess our supper at mamak is like their late night snack, lol. My encounter with language was when I was in US back in1995 (no handphone yet), I asked the airport guard where is the public phone.. boy... She was giving me that look wth you talking about. Hahahaha. I have to explained to her what I'm looking for and she told me over there it call payphone. I think you didn't encounter that since you guys are younger than me. But Rachel is a very polite American so Kumar you got a good one!

The older generation of Malaysian some of them do speak british English, but not heavy accent like the English people. They speak clearly and pronounce the words correctly and written English is good. But the younger msian generation now speak mixed English and a lot of slang like American english as in Msia we have lots of American tv movies, entertainment, sitcoms, documentary influence. Msia so speak mixed English, maybe our kind of English with local words. If I speak proper English with British English pronunciation, they reply back and say, ohh you are speaking london.... He he...

Hi Logesh Just wondering - how do you address your in-laws? "Dad"? "Mom"?, or call them by their first name? Cos I have a friend married to an English; he'd address both his in-laws by their first names. For me (and I believe Asians too), I'd feel awkward and even disrespectful if I were to do that. Conversely, how does Rachel address her in-laws? Sorry, don't mean to pry. Just curious about this particular cultural 'baggage'.
@KumaarFamily
@KumaarFamily 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a really great question! Logesh refers to Rachel’s parents as “Mom and Dad” and Rachel calls Logesh’s parents “Amma and Appa”. But you’re right, we do know a lot of Americans that call their in-laws by their first name!

I am Malaysian and I am dating a British man. I am glad that we do not have many differences in using words and phrases because we both speak in British English ( I do learn some British/Mancunian slangs) and I lived in the UK for a while. My bf is not good in spicy food so I may need to put more effort to train him up XD At least he loves Malaysian food =P BTW Yassss! Eating bad food will definitely ruin our whole day (the aftermath will also affect my working mood for the day too)!!! XP For us, only salt & pepper is too boring and plain af!

I married a British man myself for 22yrs now. We still have some minor misunderstanding which was no big deal. But there is some similarity especially on wet toilet /dry toilet, wearing shoes/no shoes allowed inside house, eating food completely and not to waste.
