Wow , these scenes would have “spiced” up the desperation Leto was feeling , the helplessness Lady Jessica was experiencing, the resigned impending doom gurney was experiencing, the utter defeat and gloating pyter was relishing, and Rabaan’s commitment to the Barron his uncle !

The banquet scene being cut was a mistake. Based on what we see in the film, the population of Arrakis are just the impoverished fellahin (I hope I am using the correct Arabic term here) in the city crying “Lisan Al-Gaib!” When they see Paul, and the Fremen in the desert. But in the book there are Houses Minor and smugglers who control trade in commodities and off world tech, Spacing Guild and Imperial representatives who are a part of the political machinations. The time period between the Atreides arrival on Arrakis and the attack by the Harkonnens and the Sardaukar feels rushed and empty because of it.

That scene in the book is a subtle but large part of Herber's world building. You realize that there are layers to the universe that we only get a glimpse of, but that are just as important. I think I also remember them saying that 99.9% of humans in the universe never experience interstellar travel, which is such an important fact to think about. We're seeing statesmanship at the highest level.

I love these deep dives, but it’s also so disappointing that they were deleted from the final cut. I wish we could’ve gotten a Longer cut of the final film to flesh out more of the story. Hopefully we get a directors cut.

In only this instance I hope the studio goes over his head and releases an extended version. As with the LOTR this being a book translation leads so well into this as many of us will happily enjoy a longer cut in our homes. The cinematic experience demands certain time constraints I believe are becoming less relevant now.

Not great to me, it completely shifts the narrative of the book. Movie/show adaptions should be stopped on dune, most of the info and story comes from 3rd person narrative. Which is why it can never be properly displayed on screen.

It's those little moments between minor characters that resonate greatly throughout the story. There aren't many if any dispensable characters in Dune, they each have a part to play.

Way too much was cut from this film. When Francis Ford Coppola showed the first cut of The Godfather, Robert Evans said, "you made me a trailer, now get me a movie", I respectfully wish somebody would have done that to Denis Villeneuve.

It would have been a cool scene, but "if he dies, everyone you love dies" is a pretty tame threat for a Harkonnen to make. Everyone in their employ is a slave and lives under constant threat of death. If they want to strike fear in you, they will do things far more nightmarish than simply killing the ones you love. I doubt that guy loves anyone anyway, so idle threat.

I know Denis Villeneuve said that the theatrical cut is THE cut of the film, but that doesn't mean he can't make an extended cut. Peter Jackson does not considered the Extended LOTR films to be the "true cuts" of his films and that the theatrical releases are the "true cuts" he views the extended editions as fun extras for the superfans. Denis could do the same thing with Dune.

I so hope they release a longer cut. Especially everything before Leto's last exhale. I think that should've been the 2nd last scene just before a quick glimpse of Paul & Jessica emerging from the crashed Ornithopter. With them meeting the Fremen at the beginning of part 2. Mind you, I still much prefer the cut we got to David Lynch's version.

Movies like Dune, Lotr or Blade Runner 2049 benefit from more scenes that flesh out the lore. I mean it's financially reasonable from the studios perspective, I can't imagine why they would care about Villeneuve's opinion on that matter.

Agreed. Never been a big fan of the Lynch version TBT. Until the new film I preferred the sci-fi channel version. Of the three, I like Villeneuve’s the best but I still think Ian McNeice’s portrayal of Baron Harkonnen in the Sci-Fi channel version is closest to the way I imagined him in the book.

Wow. How much more brutal & potent an extended cut could be. I’ve read about some privileged few who have read the initial script & mentioned how it is next level story telling. Such a shame the decision is often made that the general viewing audience can’t endure epic movies theses days & it becomes a money issue of sessions per day/bums on seats. The backstory on gurney halleck and why he hates harkonenns so much would have been good but too brutal as well. His sister is r*ped and then murdered in front of him and he's whipped with a vine on his face that gives him pain forever. I think its pure hate that kept him going.

David Lynch's version integrated the role played by the Saudarkar family early in the film. This version could have used a bit more exposition about them, since the Ritual bloodletting had a high impact. Feyd Rautha Harkonnen's character is given more space than Rabban in Frank Herbert's first Dune book, especially his fondness for rigged gladiator-style fights. Feyd's encounter with Lady Fenring resonates later in the series. She gives birth to Feyd's daughter who could have later threatened Irulan.

I need an extended edition with most of these deleted scenes included in the movie. I don't care if the film is worse that way or if Villeneuve likes it less. We'll always have the original theatrical edition, but now I need more, especially the landing of Duncan Idaho, the balcony scene, the banquet scene, the garden scene with L. Jessica, Gurney Halleck playing the balisset, and many others that would fill the movie with beautiful details and more exciting pieces of story.

I think that very last scene was also meant to show that at the very least Rabban was loyal and showed a certain degree of affection towards his uncle despite all of his not so good qualities. He could have ordered the technician to let him die in order to become the new baron.

I think you can right, also he wasn't enough ambitious either, at least this is what I see. If Rabban would have been power - hungry, he would have killed or conspired against Feyd and/or the Baron long ago. I think Rabban likes power and to command others but he is satisfied with his current position and doesn't want more.

Rabban knows that his uncle is a brilliant man, certainly smarter than he is. At the very least he knows that he needs his uncle. Rabban's attitude also makes for a good counterpoint to Feyd-Rautha, who already has designs on being the Baron himself (this is a plot point in the book, and perhaps will be in Part 2).

I guess for that, these videos have to go pretty viral for them to take notice. The most any has gotten on this issue is about 450k (so far). While that is a really good indication, I think it has to be a few million before there can be any attention from the media/the studios etc or a movement like "the snyder cut" for example.

Such a shame they have deleted such poetically defining scenes not just to the movie but to the genre itself. Now that I know these scenes exist the film seems suddenly crippled just a bit from it's full potential for poetic cinemaa athough the rest of the film defines itself quite well in that sense, still I really hope there will be an extended version with these scenes someday in the not-so-distant future. Thank you for sharing these pieces of information, even though I haven-t seen the scenes I can still imagine them like a distant perfume when thinking or remembering Dune Part One. I can understand the studios trying to find that sweet spot in a film's length so as to not put off the patrons, but I do hope that Denis produces a definitive extended version for the home market where running time is a non-issue. I really enjoyed the amount of content in the two mini-series and I think there's bound to be demand for it all. The director must awaken!

I liked Lynch version best. Problems with V version was he didn't want certain parts to shine. Lynch version was largely the best cast Dune. V version was both constrained and had to much as they didn't know if there was a green light for next installment. Lynch version I think they went a little over on villains at time. It was very much a product of its time: formulation & scenes

Amazing work! There's so many scenes I didn't even knew existed. I'm just wondering if you know about that Leto and Jessica scene they released a picture (she has the red dress) but it was cut. I've been wondering what happened there.

I’m glad some of these were cut. The sapho juice thing is one of my pet peeves. It’s literally mentioned once and only Thufir in the entire series uses it and only once. None of Piter, Duncan, Anteac, Teg, Duncan (again) nor Belonda ever use it. It’s an ugly Lynch abomination when he made it and permeates the imagery around the series constantly.
