I have no clue why Villeneuve says deleted scenes are "dead"-- shows a disregard for the very fan culture that has allowed him to get these movies made. He is adapting a source, after all, and this scene is central to its worldbuilding. Knowing that there is corruption and intrigue on Arrakis, rather than only the "noble savage" Fremen, greatly enriches the story.
@PrimerCinePodcast
@PrimerCinePodcast 2 жыл бұрын
This scene would have enrichen the story SO MUCH. Especially on reinforcing the fremen's wishes to alter the climate of Arrakis for the better and for their descendants, whilst the businessmen couldn't possibly care less as long as the profits kept piling up. What a shame it was cut.

Just cannot see it working in the film at all. Requires super dense dialogue to explain every detail to audience. That’s the style of the books and trying to follow it is why previous screen adaptations have failed so badly. It’s full of characters that we never see again and none of it is central to the story. Total opposite approach to the show-don’t-tell style of the film.
@cardiac19
@cardiac19 2 жыл бұрын
This whole film is like that. While beautiful and so well shot, yet, the script cuts out SO many scenes that are super important to the story. This scene being one of those. Also missing, Jessica/Yeuh convo while still on Caladan. Jessica/Thufer, Jessica reviling her powers. Thufer/Paul in the training room. Paul/Leto talk about his love of Jessica and always trusting her. No naming ceremony with the Fremen at the Cave of Birds. No funeral ceremony for Jamis, “I was a friend of Jamis.” For that matter where the fuck is Gurney and his Balliset!?
@Shan_Dalamani

@@mynameisweevil The problem with this scene as related in the video is that not very damn much of it was actually dialogue from the novel. Some of it has obviously been "adjusted" to account for Kynes' sex change. And that toast? Leto makes the toast, then pours the water out on the floor. Due to the requirements of protocol, all the guests must do likewise. Only Kynes saves his, preserving it instead of wasting it. Paul explains how a lifeform's greatest threat is from its own kind, in the context of all of them preying on the same food. He illustrates this by sticking his fork into the dinner plate of the woman beside him, and eating the bite of food he's speared. Paul also explains drowning to the people there who have no concept of being immersed in water and being unable to breathe. The miniseries included the banquet scene, and aside from the addition of Irulan (who wasn't there in the novel) and her bizarre butterfly dress, it works out quite well.

thats what you get when you have a self indulgent director who believes "the theatrical cut is the director's cut" or some such bull shit Hollywoke directors say to excuse their laziness. Dune was a cinematic experience worthy of the name - but it wasn't a good Dune adaptation, alas. Or at the least... Not the one we fans deserved. Here's hoping someone will bypass Villeneuve's snooty demand and edit a complete Dune cut once the 2nd part is over and done with. Til then, just accept you're getting a cinematic story and not THE STORY. PS: to those who say horsecrap like "it's an adaptation" and "things are bound to get lost in the cutting room" -- Way more than just things were lost in the cutting room. The beating, pulsing heart of the story, characters and world was barely present in the whole piece. That's not a victim of the cutting room floor - that's a decapitation

Even though the film did well in theaters, Denis' comment about Dune needing to be on the big screen seems antiquated even 2 years later. Rewatching, I can't shake how abridged the pacing feels and how much less of Herbert's world could be brought to life. It doesn’t make much sense financially, either, as entertainment changes. The movie could do well expanded and restructured as a miniseries.

This scene in the book was extremely important. It showed how big the universe is and actually shows why the emperor views house Atreides as a threat since so many houses immensely respect Atreides over the empire. It's baffling why it wasn't in the movie. In fact I think if you just watch the movie you might be confused as to why the emperor wants to destroy house Atreides.
@secretsofdune
@secretsofdune 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the main reason it seems it to save time. It seems a lot of sacrifices were made for the movie format. A TV series wouldn't have had this problem. In fact, an entire episode could have been dedicated to the Banquet scene and it could have been interesting.

@@secretsofdune I don't know it's still odd. I think they could've condensed the dinner scene to maybe 15 minutes if length of the movie was the issue. I thought it was crucial to the plot in the book. I was thinking maybe it was studio meddling that forced the director not to include the scene because maybe they thought the movie was too "slow"? Hopefully in the sequel we get a flashback to the banquet or maybe a scene showing the other house's and how they feel about house Atreides and the empire.

Denis was so adamant about having this film seen on the biggest screens possible, and not merely on home theaters or phones even, constrained by reduced size and short attention spans. I assume he did so out of a sense of propriety and a purity of sorts regarding what a film experience ideally should be. Why oh why can't he apply that same reasoning to the importance of making a full extended edition film, equally proper and pure, not constrained by the artificial limits of big-theater runtimes and short attention spans?
@Shan_Dalamani
@Shan_Dalamani 2 жыл бұрын
Purity? LOL. He changed things that didn't need changing, made shit up that was never in the novel, copied the Lynch version of the stillsuits even though they're nothing like the novel describes (the miniseries is more faithful to the novel in that respect), and omitted critical scenes in order to substitute all sorts of crap that was never in the novel. And instead of including the physical evidence that there's a genetic link between Jessica and the Baron, she's made to look dull as dishwater and the baron looks like a potato.

I think in a lot of ways it's almost as important as Stilgar first meeting Leto & Paul and sizing them up. I felt there wasn't quite enough showing Jessica & Leto's relationship and how much he valued her and how much Paul was rapidly learning under her Bene Geserit tutelage. But most of all the sheer danger they were in from the moment they set foot on Arrakis should have had a little more time to breathe and develop tension. I am very hopeful part 2 will expand on slot more detail since part 1 has done pretty well for the studio.

everyone who love the Dune books can totally imagine their version of this scene with the lavish visuals the latest film gave us. the movie is as close to perfection as it can be, though another 30 munites wouldn't have hurt but this sequence didn't fit to the rythm and length of the movie. There are sacrfices to be made and Villeneuve and his team did the right choices as the movie turned out to be phenomenal. It would not have worked if they to stick to the books to the letter , since its so much shorter. It still delivered everything that is told in Dune and they gave the setting and characters amazingly complex, deep and distinct feel through audiovisual impression rather than lengthy narrative. Everything is shown in this film before its mentioned, so the audience is already familiar with what is going to be told rather than the other way around. Dune is a masterfully executed film because they didn't want to make things work that are not possible to tell briefly yet they managed to tell everything in an elaborate way

I think out of all the deleted scenes, if I had to pick only one to be in the film, it would be this one. I know a lot of fans are disappointed we're not going to get an extended cut, but perhaps we should consider the possibility that these scenes just didn't work. I immediately noticed the lack of the welcome banquet scene. I think it would have done much to better breathe life into Arrakis as a world in and of itself with a fully fledged culture and society. That said, I do understand why it was cut. While the scene does more deeply expand on the culture and societal workings of Arrakis and Spice production in general, it does so through "throw away" characters. And even with Dr. Kynes, it's fleshing out a character who, while pivotal, isn't integral to the 2nd half of the 1st film and often goes forgotten by the time you get to the later chapters of the story that will make up the 2nd movie. Like many of the other deleted scenes, I expect it ended up being a casualty of considerations for the overall run time of the film. Normally this wouldn't be a real problem, as we'd get a director's cut down the line for those of us with functioning attention spans. But the real problem comes from Denis' insistence on not doing director's cut/extended releases of his films. Frankly it's an idiotic stance that just wastes all of that extra time and effort spent on shooting and performing scenes that just get left on the cutting room floor due to modern marketing reasons.

Worthy scenes. But then every scene in Dune is worthy. Probably the most densely packed prose in all of science fiction. Any other writer would need a page or two to describe what Frank Herbert captures in a singe line. As good as Villeneuve's movie is, he could have cut out half the landscapes and chases, doubled the running time, and still left a lot of good scenes on the cutting room floor. These scenes here are at least as strong as a lot of what made the cut. I think maybe he underestimates his audience.

They’re really needed to make the movie longer. Don’t get me wrong, I loved every bit of the current version and was satisfied but man, there was so much more they could explain and add to this magical story. Perhaps it would change the directors vision, I don’t know, sometimes too much info makes things too complicated. Well, I just had a conversation with myself it seems like lol

The omission of this scene is a huge problem for both the 2021 and 1984 film adaptations of the book. It establishes the enormous monetary value of water on Arrakis, the social hierarchies of Arrakeen society, and the Atreides’ sense of noblesse oblige. The Lynch version had to cover the entire novel in its running time, but that it’s also missing from Villenueve’s film, which effectively has twice as much time to tell the same story, shows how little its narrative actually accomplished.

@@secretsofdune -- If only the writers and director had consulted with a few die-hard Fans of Frank Herbert! This is one of my criticisms of contemporary films: character development is sacrificed for the sake of 'exciting' CGI visuals and making changes to the film's direction. I was appalled the Fremen were placed as racial foils. IMHO it smacks of appeasement. I could be totally wrong, of course, lol.

I like how the author hides themes and foreshadows in the book. One tiny and somewhat insignificant sentence in chapter 16 of the dinner scene is “He seemed to listen for a moment to a man down the table who was explaining to the duke that native Arrakeen plants have no thorns.” Thorns evolved in sandy environments as a defense mechanism against predators. It’s like a metaphor for Fremen.

It's weird how every now and then there's a piece of dialogue that just feels completely out of place in the Dune setting, like vision Chani saying "I knew you couldn't stay the hell away" or Lady Jessica saying "that was insane" after the worm chase, I really wish they'd maybe looked over the script one final time because dialogue that feels that modern and contemporary just takes me completely out of the film.

Unless a scene directly conflicts with the story them I just include it as extended footage. It's not that these types of deleted scenes don't add to the story or that they're not important but producers usually just have a bunch of stupid restrictions and length requirements so that have to pick and choose.

they could of easily added this and removed the flashbacks and dreams and a lot of the scenes on calidan that really Didn't need to be in the movie. like the Characters in the banquet would also show Pauls maturity and cunning and also the way the nobles will use their daughters to try woo him the water seller scene would of been really ideal also the former Rev mother's brail message on the leaf in the atrium and also the fact people would be suspecting jessica of betrail not the doctor. i mean i'd of liked her to use the voice on Hawat well she uses Pheramone control on him like so many detailed scenes that make the story better but this half movie missed yet Syfy didn't

Would have been nice to see Gurney playing his instrument like Brolin said he did but I can see why they cut this scene. When it builds up to the discussion between Paul and Dr Kines about the research facilities, something that gets repeated later in the film *at* said station. Yet the movie still pads out its runtime with repeated exposition about the significance of crysknives.

What annoys me the most about all the cut material - is what took its place. There are far too many self indulgent shots that go on for WAAAY Longer than they have to and should. And i'm not a man who likes his cuts quick. So even for me, it was draining. SO much of the film is padded with these kinds of shots that just halt the story for the sake of atmosphere in the cinema (which can't be recreated faithfully back home, where the film will live on for longer than in the cinemas, ffs). SO we have an excellent cinematic experience for Dune, but once you wanna revisit it, you end up feeling both inspired (cause it is a damned good movie), and hollow, because it could've been much better, and at some point likely was... Until producers either didn't do their jobs (interfere with the director), or just didn't do it right (knowing when to interfere with the director). I not only demand an extended edition - I demand an entirely recut film with better pacing, plot structure and a much bigger scope. The scope is not big, sorry... Where are all the other Houses? The streets of Arrakeen? More time in Caladan to contrast to Arrakis and make this young boy's departure from the only world he's ever known... Uhm... I dunno.... appropriately tragic? How do you not, for instance, open the Caladan scenes with a "goodbye and good luck party" for Duncan Idaho and the advance scout party to Arrakis? This way. you can not just introduce the House Atreides, but show how they're different from all the other Great Houses (They're throwing one of their commanders a goodbye party is a nice way of doing that in an Imperium as cruel as Dune's) and intro all the character relationships. Just off the top of my head, there's a way to go about it - if Denis felt like there wasn't enough time to do all that - that scene would take about 5-7 mins and it would set up the tragedy that is to come halfway through the film that much more. It'd also be a nice way of showing the kid Paul before everything starts to change, which you absolutely don't get. How about re-editing the film into a political thriller - a "who's gonna do it" political sci fi tragedy - You know - like the book! The current adaptation actually has some of this - but we have nothing to contrast it to when all we see is House Atreides and House Harkonnen feuding - and the Harkonnens' screentime is limited to about 3-5 minutes at any given time, if that. It all feels like its only happening to them and Arrakis, and nowhere else. (And Part Two can't make up for that, because we don't have time for that). In Part One, There's no build up - no chance for the paranoia to creep up on the viewer because of twists and turns in the narrative. Nothing that makes this world that much different from any other sci-fi world. Dune has living computers because of a reality where, in ancient times, people rose up against AI and won, causing an entire regression of technology! How is that not the first thing you start with, Mr. Villeneuve?! And despite all that lack - what we do have is seeing the same bull statue ten times, and spaceships landing for minutes at a time. Cut some of those in half, and you got another 20-25 mins of screentime, easy! If I knew an extended cut was on the horizon, I'd hold my tongue, but Denis is one of those director's that don't believe in director's cuts, so to me it's all just so disappointing.

This movie is a Rorschach test for the fandom. It is visually stunning and should be praised as such, but blockbuster films have put all their eggs in the basket of visually stunning so I'm not sure how valuable it is. On the other hand, every scene of with Paul before he leaves Caladan was heavily modified or straight up invented wholecloth and no one seems to care because...? Personally I think this is just another example of Hollywood larping their IP instead of actually telling the story of their IP.
@humbleopulence
@humbleopulence 9 ай бұрын
I couldn't agree more, mate. The film feels built around its star quality - a trope of Hollywood adaptations of the 30-50s, which I suspect Denis is trying to subconsciously emulate in this production. (That's just what it feels like to me - the prestige picture that requires big stars to tell the story - allegedly) What you end up with is a rather good adaptation that ends up cutting all the subplots in the edit - and thus all the depth that justifies everyone's hard work. Another issue with this line of thinking - is that it will cause an auteur like Denis to make his peace with all the cut material and never ever release a director's cut or an extended "Herbert Cut" (re: Peter Jackson's extended LOTR films for how to properly satisfy book fans) - because Monsieur Villeneuve is an auteur - and auteurs do not revisit their films. it would take away their auteur status. It'd mean that they didn't intend the original film (which was praised, so his ego is soothed) to be the actual film. That's something an "Auteur" simply couldn't allow. As you can tell, I feel strongly about this LOL

@@humbleopulence while I agree with all your points, I'm far saltier with the fandom than DV. All these ostensibly intelligent people who read the books (you kind of have to be intelligent to get through them) crowing about the authenticity and accuracy of the movie just sets me off. If intelligent and discerning people can still be duped by LCD gimmicks then I might as well give up, we'll never have a good story on screen ever again.

good job // myop Dune should be re edited with the deleted scenes, like The Godfather was for its first TV release. both Gs were put on Tv with some scenes never seen before. I would have The Same occur with DUNE. after Dune Part 2 is shown at the Box Office. pause for the Cause, then drop a Larger DUNE and have it ready as a Limited Series (in the mind of the viewer), than just two large parts of a whole. stay safe, have Fun and of course Happy Easter.

Yeah, it seems such a pity this scene was deleted. In the words of the Dune Dude: *"It really ties the film together"* Jokes aside, it really does link the competing interests on Arrakis and the wider Imperium together. It would have helped act as a primer to the political backdrop, just as in the book.
