Dave Butz story....the year of the NFL strike I worked at a Racquetball Club just a few miles from Redskins park. We had two full lines of Nautilus equipment. Joe Gibbs was a racquetball player and frequented the club. During the strike a TON of Redskin players just started showing up at the club to work out. It was their unofficial training site until the strike ended. Dave was among them. He was HUGE. In the offseason he would get up to 325 or so, then slim down to playing weight. But at 6'8", 325 is nuttin! I watched him sit down on the Super Pullover (back, lats) machine and put the pin at or near the bottom of the stack. He started doing reps while talking to one of the other players. Just causally talking doing reps with the whole damn stack. Must have done 20 reps. THEN he puts the stack down, takes ONE ARM OFF the bar and starts doing reps with one arm. Then he changed arms and did it all over again. Strongest man I ever saw. RIP Mr Butz.

Doesn’t matter. We who watched him know. He was nasty, like Riggins, but a larger version on the defensive side. Both were champions, and guys you didn’t want to collide with on the field. Both had huge hearts. I was blessed to be a Skins fan growing up. We whooped some ass.

The case could be made. In addition to being a great player, he also remained productive throughout the lenght of his long career. Watching these clips brings back great memories.

Great Player and Man ! Mr. Butz was at the Baggage Carousel at Washington National (Reagan) airport; when my 3-year old Sammy climbed atop the 7' tall machine. Suddenly, it started moving with luggage dropping from above to swirling down the moving pyramid to the conveyor belt below. I reacted fast like Marine Dad, but Big Dave Butz was much faster as he reached over with his 6'5" height and long reach to pluck Sammy out of the air. Then he passed my son off to me like a little football. This play fooled my wife Coach to this day. She never saw the hand-off. Thus saving me the ass-chewing from my wife.

Dave Butz was one of the greatest to ever play the game. Unlike his fellow Redskins defensive legend Dexter Manley, he was a reserved man didn't say much and had a quiet intensity but he had a wild side too. I remember John Riggins telling a story about how he and Bruno, Dave Butz's nickname is Bruno, were in a bar in San Diego after a game against the Chargers, and they had a wild night of drinking and Bruno was drunk out of his skull LOL

The song about Daniel Boone said he was a man ,he was a big man. But he wasn't bigger than Dave Butz . But Mr. Butz wasn't just big in stature he was also big in heart. A kind and a very good human being. He was on the quiet side but make no mistake he let his actions do all his talking. Just like he did on the football field while leading our defense. And yes he was Washington's defensive leader,,and Washington's defense was always among the best while Mr. Butz was there. He once said that Mean Joe Green who also was a D tackle introduced himself and gave him major propers by saying that "He played the position better than he did". So with "that" being said to him by Mean Joe. Yes, Dave Butz should be in the HOF. RIP and the privilege of being able to watch a awsome athlete but a true professional on & off the field. You will be truly missed Sir.

Dave Butz was the reason that the Redskins were number one against the run. Even Barry Sanders and Walter Peyton had their worst games against Washington. To hold the greats, Walter Peyton and Barry Sanders to only 30 one 40 yards is an accomplishment by any defense. Dave Butts was the man in the middle stuffing any rushers who tried to go through the middle. It was nearly impossible for any running back to get through big Dave Butz. When he stood in your way, you’re going down. I agree that he should be in the Hall Of Fame, just on his longevity alone. Butz played a lot of seasons for a defensive lineman, much less the nose tackle position. Butz played that position about as good as anyone could. He also had a lot of sacks for a guy his size. He was near 7 foot once he was fully dressed out in his huge set of cleats and helmet on. There was a point when Butz wore the largest shoes in the league. He was also known for having the largest helmet in that time. My only disappointment was the Redskins never got Dan Bunz. Could you imagine a defense with both Butz and Bunz lining up? They would just need a linebacker named Frank Hynie to join Butz and Bunz.

The only reason Dave Butz isn't in the hall of fame is because he never self-promoted. He just did his job quietly and let his play do the talking. The media likes talkers and self-promoters. Unfortunately, Dave is a doer, not a talker. EDIT: The BEST damn defensive tackle that's not in the HOF.

Hey, today's players? Are you watching this? He just goes back to the huddle, not run 50 yards and beat his chest, pull his chest apart or fist his heart (as if nobody else plays with any heart or passion). How I wish these silly and look at what I did players of today would act humbled and with class. Players of yesteryear were much more watchable. Just take your over rated selves back to the huddle without the showboating!
