I was in my late teens when I and everyone I knew got mobiles. We used abbreviated txt because those early phones limited us to 160 characters and we could fit more words or sentiment into a message by skipping vowels and shortening words. Plus writing the words was more laborious before phones had full keyboards. Then we got phones where you could write longer messages but they were charged per "page" so if you went to 161 characters you were charged double and with the amount of messages we were sending that could soon add up so it still made more sense to economise the lettering. It's modern phones where young people can write a text like it's an email knowing however long the message gets it will still cost the same and arrive all on one page. x
@r0bw00d4 жыл бұрын
If only those people had realized that they could have delivered all of those words, not only without having to abbreviate them, but also with far less button presses, by dialing the receiver's number and pressing Send.

Dave has missed out something about spelling correctly when texting: the generation below roughly 25 spell things properly in texts too mostly. We type sufficiently quickly that shorthand isn't meaningfully faster anymore. A few terms (lol, omg, etc.) are used but no one I know would send anything like the message he used as an example

Well, whenever mobile phones first got popular, and text messages were fairly new, everyone used shorthands cause space was limited. Ie 40 characters limited (i think) so people often had to send multiple messages. Then phones came out that would let you send 3 messages as one (cause networks were still charging you per blocks of characters, so it appeared to be just one message, really it was 'worth' 1-3 texts) and if you wanted to send more than 120 (i think) characters its switched from 3 text messages to multimedia, ie it would charge the same as if you were sending a picture. And if memory holds texts were 8-12p per text, and 50p for an image
@ChrissieBear3 жыл бұрын
In my experience the only people who use simplified typing in messages are those that grew up with mobile phones before smart phones.

@@burgersbeansandchips Illiteracy? - That means the inability to read or write. The abbreviating people among us are not only reading and writing, but also encoding and decoding. I would push back on the spelling in text thing. What he said is maybe true for certain things like "lol" "bff" or "lmao," things that have entered the vernacular. But for things like "c u l8r" and "gd 2 c u," its pretty much exclusively the older folks who use that now. Theres some nuance in tech history he skipped. When an sms message had to be under 160 characters and each letter could be up to three clicks to type, it made more sense to type that way. It was just agreed that sending sms messages was expensive and annoying enough that it was worth the hassle of shortening words as much as possible. When messages became free (either through unlimited plans in the usa or by switching to apps like whatsapp in other countries) and full sized keyboards became the norm, most people under 40 or 50 stopped typing like that and all our parents never got the memo.
