@darthsawlex82573 жыл бұрын
Yeah if I knew a film was made about a mop, I would be far more interested in seeing it as it's such a funny concept rather than the generic sort of trailer that Joy has, it's not bad I just wouldn't go to see it (and didn't), though admittedly I'd never heard of it till I watched this episode back when it came out or around that time.
@timbeaton50453 жыл бұрын
@@darthsawlex8257 I did actually see it, and I did enjoy it, but hadn't seen the trailer beforehand. I guess that the Production company having invested in the film, must have had second thoughts about its saleability, and basically tried to make a trailer that oversold it. That, it seems, is pretty much the business of making trailers. This story could be told about many films.

Hang on... the interview process should have been a bit more consistent. If you phrase the question as "Is there a celebrity..." vs "Which celebrity would you" then you are giving them the chance to say no. Otherwise, all they are trying to do is answer the question earnestly. You are already putting them under the assumption that they would buy it, they just have to decide which celebrity convinced them. To make the experiment more accurate she should have used the same wording every time.

While I agree with you, I do think it's interesting that people would be willing to accept the idea of selling or buying defunct products so long as a celebrity endorses it. For ages, I was convinced Dave was confusing Star Wars with Star Trek. That outfit certainly fits more within the Trek universe than Wars due primarily to the colour scheme that is also used for the uniforms. Also, there is no celebrity that would get me to buy a product that doesn't work, simply because there is no celebrity that would get me to buy a product that DOES work. I find that kind of endorsement incredibly tacky, and it has only worked on me once, and that was when I was a literal child and the Spice Girls got me to buy loads of Pepsi.
@ThePlacehole4 жыл бұрын
Which is why I think the question was not communicated properly. Even though it was clearly stated that it is a product that YOU would buy whilst KNOWING it does not work, what everyone understood was "what celebrity could help shift the product, if we did some clever marketing to disguise the fact" - as the first person proved. They would have to try much harder to get across the idea that they actually want the obvious answer which they already know, to a deliberately stupid question.

I think the two-part question at 35:20 about the ineffective snoring remedy was deliberately misleading. It was phrased wrongly to produce fair replies, but angled correctly for comedic effect. Maybe it's a British thing - Monty Python would happily create a Ministry of Silly Remedies; Blackadder would sell soothing neck salve to doomed guillotine victims; the Two Ronnies would get a ten minute sketch from The Art of Lying in Advertising. This question might well have worked differently in different countries. Would Germans have simply refused to answer a question that made no sense? Would USA peeps have called the cops or threatened to sue someone? We're all wired differently. Just because the snoring remedy is useless is no reason not to imagine a fantasy campaign whereby garbage could be sold to desperate and credulous people. It works with God and religion, after all. ;-) The majority of the interviewees were trying to be helpful by answering a hypothetical question from a hypothetical point of view, and not as though they were agreeing to buy a useless product there and then. The few who answered "No," would have been seen by many of us as dull, tiresome, literal-minded planks who'd had a sense of humour bypass. Once taken into the interviewer's confidence, why WOULDN'T they suggest some names? Wallace and Gromit. Miss Piggy. The Queen. Stephen Fry. Dave Gorman. It's not enough for the interviewer to say "It doesn't work, but -" because the people being interviewed are now in on the 'joke' and playing along with the pretence. They've been asked for a name, not to examine the ethics of the proposed campaign. The two-part question was a clever idea to make people appear stupid, which is yet another reason never to stop to talk to anybody holding a clipboard or a microphone.
