The song was written from a female perspective trying to get her boyfriend, the singer to come back home. “I’m the no. 1 fan of the man from Tennessee” is how she is referring to him, trying to get him to come home to her in Tennessee. This is very sweet and well written love song. And it still sounds as sweet and beautiful as it did so very many years ago.

One year older here, had graduated and was starting college with trepidation. For me it was almost as if the life I left behind in school was pleading with me to come back. It still is...this song is of the quality of Time in a Bottle and many others like it. We have lost the great folk music type artists to nothing but sensationalism and noise since those days.

Dave is the second cousin of pop singer Kenny Loggins. Among his major career moments, Loggins counts "touring England in the early '70s with the Everly Brothers, meeting John Lennon at the Grammys in '75, and writing six #1 records and not winning songwriter of the year, and then having seven the next year to win." I cannot conceive, as a former music teacher and current musician/singer, how ANYONE could NOT like this song, or not trip their trigger much [really? come on!]. It tells a sad story but with a beautiful melody and sung with passion, and is of the caliber back in the day of John Denver, Jim Croce, and Carol King and many others. One listen and she decides it's "okay". Many great songs take several listens to get used to and then one comes to the realization that this is well written work of musical art.

Dave Loggins was hitchhiking in the East Tennessee area when a “hippie chick” I went to high school with picked him up in her classic VW Beetle. She was stunningly beautiful, one of those natural faces that defined the 60s/70s in ads and magazines. She invited him to meet the family that ran a lakefront camping resort and marina. A romance blossomed and he stayed with her for sometime. The story goes that she became the muse for another of his sweet ballads , “Girl From Knoxville”. He’s really singing about a girl from Rockwood as he mentions in the 1st line. I’ve always suspected she might be “the number one fan of the man from Tennessee” in the “Please Come to Boston” lyrics, too.

This song reminds of my rambling days after high scool(Graduated in 1965) Traveled the Country with my then girlfriend doing odd jobs mainly construction in a beat up ford station wagon. After a year got accepted at university of Maryland, became a structural engineer, lived in chevy chase, had 4 kids and 12grandchildren.

Back in the day, I thought that Dave Loggins and Kenny Loggins were brothers. However, according to Wikipedia, they are 2nd cousins. This song was a big hit when it came out, but doesn't get much attention anymore. Good song.

This song was sung by Reba McEntire in 1995 and she sings it as if she wrote it, and does a great job with it, her version has a little more of a county music flair, it is worth hearing how it is sung with her voice...and also Tom Hanks wife Rita Wilson sang it in 2012 and makes it more contemporary sounding both versions should be listened to...there may be other renditions as well.💯❤‍🔥🌟🌠🌌🌌🌬💋

Did you catch the double meaning in that line when he was in LA? "There's some stars that fell from the sky and are living upon the hill" ..He's in LA, near Hollywood Hills where all the movie stars live! I thought that was a very clever line! Dave Loggins is such a great talented singer/songwriter.

I heard this song a lot in the 70s and it took me nearly 50 years to hear another Dave Loggins song. My streaming service played his song "I'm Gonna Farm You Off Of My Mind" which I really enjoyed. Uptempo and country sounding.

You might find his " Augusta" interesting. He wrote it after attending the Masters Golf Tournament held at the Augusta National Golf course located in Augusta, GA. The Augusta National adopted the instrumental version and still uses it to this day. If you search on Utube...Dave Loggins Augusta the video someone made pips up first. Masters Theme.. .includes him singing the lyrics along to his music.

This song made me bawl when I was a little boy and still does after all these decades later! I will say though, even as a youngster and now a mature man, I ALWAYS thought she was so selfish. He had dreams and still wanted her, but all she wanted was what she wanted for herself and seemingly didn't want to share much less sacrifice or have any dreams for herself?...GIve up your dreams for me, only me was her total mindset....

It works the other way just as easily. He's wanting her to leave her home and everything she knows and loves for living on the road. That's just as selfish if not more so. I think it's just about two people who want different things in life.

I personally would think wanting to be with the one you love is more important than a "home" and when that person has big dreams I would think one would want to share that dream with that person, especially when seemingly she had no dreams of her own. He was practically begging her of course it's his version in the song. He wasn't really "living on the road" either. He lived in various places trying to make it and when he finally made it big and was going to be in L.A. forever she wanted him to give it all up and live with her in someplace in Tennessee? I don't know I think a partnershp/relationship is one of support when someone has dreams and goals. It would be different if she had her own that differed from his. Seemingly she did not. No relationship can survive if it's one sided and you expect a person to give up everything for only you and it has to be 100% everything only for you.... Sorry i'm rambling, laugh...

He obviously doesn't love her enough to want to be with her so it works both ways. Besides that there's a certain city in Tennessee that's all about music. A place called Nashville. There are dreams and reality. She wants the latter. That's her dream if you will and he's not willing to give up anything for her. Most people want something solid to build their life on and besides dreams rarely come true. Cynical I know but a fact. We could start a college course on analyzing opposite views of this song couldn't we.
