Another one of those songs that after 40 years, when or where it comes on, you stop to listen. It NEVER gets old.

This was my first dance song at my wedding. A few years later I sang it to my husband as he passed away from cancer. Makes me cry every time I hear it now.

That girl really had her mind set. The poetry he was singing would have convinced about 99% of women to go to him.

"Café, where I hope to be working soon" refers to him playing music at the café; as some cafes, even today, sometimes hire musicians to play music while the customers eat their meals.

I used to cry when I was a little girl, when I heard this. This song, and Sylvia’s Mother. I was probably too young to understand the full meaning, but I felt the sadness and pain.

There are some songs that carry with them all the sadness of their meaning on the recording. When you hear this song, it portrays such a feeling of longing and singleminded love for someone. It's hard not to get emotional.

Great song! This song was BIG in it’s day. I was living in Cranston at the time, and when I hear this song I can still see in my mind’s eye all the old snow piled up in the roadsides and the feelings I had back in the come flooding back because my man had to go away to school for months at time and he would always wind up coming home early because we couldn’t stand to be apart; snd yes, he would try to get me to come be with him, but I wanted HIM to come home. Memories, [sigh]

Yeah, it's in the melody that hits you in the feels. It was almost like the lyrics were secondary growing up listening to these songs. Sure we sang every word but it was the _aroma_ of a nice melody that struck home. "Danny's Song" is another of his when he was with Jim Messina that has it too. You did good on this one BM!

I love me some Dave Loggins. I was hooking up with this album when I was a little kid because my dad used to play it when it came out in the 70s. I know all the songs. I’ll tell you what, make sure you listen to Sunset Woman and also Girl from Knoxville. Definite bangers.

You surprised me doing this one, but I agree that it is good to do different types of music. Think about it: we have different emotions and moods, so why not listen to different types of music: sad, happy, high energy, and laid back, etc.

Maybe it's only me, but I have always thought decades ago and now decades later, that the woman his woman was beyond selfish! He had dreams and he still wanted her, he wanted both, he pleaded with her, but all she thought was about herself and having him where SHE wanted him.

Yes, but it’s equally true of him. They just want different things, as well as wanting each other. There’s always a tension between travelling/exploring and settling down. Both offer opportunities and experiences. Many people feel that tension within themselves. Many couples find their desires aren’t as synchronised as they thought. Or people change and they become unsynchronised, either for a while, or forever. Sometimes couples stay together with one of them prepared to compromise, a little or a lot.Usually such compromises can’t work long-term ; occasionally they do. Couples sometimes continue, with each hoping the other will change their mind eventually. Sometimes that does happen, often it doesn’t. This song is perfect in capturing those tensions and uncertainties, and the love/yearning that persists despite such tension, and the poignancy in working through them …. The song wasn’t a hit here in the U.K. I was very moved by it when I heard it on Country Club on BBC radio, but I doubt any of my teenage school fellows ever heard it. Dolly Parton’s ‘Down from Dover’ and Jim Croce’s ‘Lover’s Cross’ were similarly poignant gems about the complexities some people encounter in relationships, that I stumbled across away from the mainstream radio channels/programmes. Each are ‘once heard, never forgotten’ even if it was many years until you heard them again ….
