People can say what they want about him but Dave Matthews is underrated as a guitar player. Not flashy but he’s often times playing and singing over changing time signatures.

I know nothing about playing guitar and structuring chords, but I LOVE Dave Matthews’ incredible talent and music, so thank you Tom for masterfully going through these chords…. I love all the songs.. and lyrics too: “My head won’t leave my head alone and I don’t believe it will until I’m dead and gone!” I relate.

When I was first teaching myself guitar I learned the first three DMB albums front to back obsessively. I’ve since moved on to electric blues/rock/country styles but I’ve always said the Dave stuff was probably the most challenging music I’ve ever played. Tripping Billies is insane.

Agreed, I used to know those Albums front to back. It’s been so long since I’ve even played one that I’d almost have to start from scratch

I’m kind of doing what you did in reverse. Started mostly as electric/blues based stuff. Learning DMB stuff now and it’s quite a challenge in the opposite way of lead playing!

Actually impressed yall put "Seven" in there, one of their best ever imo. So rad.

Dave is so difficult to play, thanks for your post. Even when I do learn some of his riffs , for get about singing at the same time, he is amazing!

My Essential Picks to Play and Sing: 1. One Sweet World 2. Tripping Billies 3. Snow Outside 4. Crash Into Me 5. The Stone Runners Up * Lie in our graves * #41 * Jimi Thing *Raven *Rooftop

Tripping Billies, The Stone, are great but i can’t argue with your selections. What Would You Say is a fun and easy riff that would be a starting point, and Ants… is another basic one that’s fun and recognizable.

Great video. Just a note, but he plays Grey Street slightly differently. During the main riff, instead of sliding the same two fingers up and down the board, he rocks back and forth between the first+second fingers and the third+fourth fingers. I'm not sure I explained that well, but I think you'll know what I mean. His way helps it sound cleaner. I slid around when I first played the song as well

There's a solo acoustic Virginia in The Rain from XM on KZbin that looks so easy to play and sing but is actually damn near impossible. Other good insane Dave solo performances are a Fool To Think and Raven from 10.24.02 Benaroya Hall. 🤙

Dude this is going to sound so stupid lmao but as I was reading your comment I actually thought it was one I must’ve posted here a while ago and forgot about because it’s literally the same thing I always think too. I don’t even know how to explain that very well but it’s crazy haha

Yeah Too Much, Tripping Billies and Satellite are pretty quintessential Dave Matthew’s, don’t forget about #41 The Best of What’s Around Jimi Thing Dave Matthews remains one of the most underrated artists and guitarists still even in 2024.

I'd encourage newbies to try Dancing Nancies. Funky, and pretty easy (relatively speaking) to play and sing at once. Add a looper to solo using those crazy Tim @ Radio City licks!

2:34 yah, because it’s harder to do. You can try and take all kinds of short cuts with his music. Heck, even Dave has started implementing shortcuts. Last stop is not currently being played in its original chord patterns, for example. Neither is raven. Cool video! Not necessarily the toughest riffs / chord progressions to play but all very unique and cool
@cliffprowse334110 ай бұрын
On Satellite, Dave also doesn’t stay confined to that fingering like you did. He slides his positioning up and down the neck. You can actually hear the fret noise as he’s sliding down and back up. That being said I play a hybrid of both the way he and you play it and it still sounds pretty much the same.

Watching now… if Tripping Billies doesn’t make the cut, I’ll be very sad. It’s very tricky playing the Dave & Tim versions of that song.
