Was Dave Matthews one of the most influential and underrated guitarist of the late 90's and into the 2000's. Baxter and Jonathan break down why every College Dude played Crash for his girlfriend, and why anyone would play a Chet Atkins Gibson.....

Dave Matthews has not only paved the way for future musicians, he has also showed us what it’s like to be a celebrity and still be a humble human being. I’ve met him a dozen times and he is extremely kind and always happy to say hello to you. He played a song for my fiancé a few years ago that he hasn’t played in 10 years. Great man.

Dave is a HUGE influence on me. Don’t even know where to begin. I was 11. 1991. I spent the Summers in VA Beach with my Dad. That Summer I stayed with my brother for most of it. He took me on a little road trip to Charlottesville, VA to see DMB at a place called Trax. This was long before Under the Table and Dreaming came but they were definitely developing their fan base. That short but brilliant show changed the course of my life, I feel. It wasn’t until years later the I picked up a guitar but when I did, I was hooked. I got a guitar for my 14th birthday and it never left my side for the first several years. Dave was way too complicated to figure out, especially sans internet. So it was probably 1999 before I was capable of trying out his licks. But when I did, I couldn’t stop. I was determined. His songs taught me how to play and sing together. If you can play What Would You Say or Satellite properly and song over it, you can play and sing anything. So, I did. I’ve since learned almost all of their songs. I’ve seen the band 77 times. Pre-Covid I was on year 3 of playing pretty much every weekend except vacations. Local bars and breweries and wineries are my spots now. As most musicians do, I have an eclectic taste with music. But I still play Dave’s tunes and they still take me back and any crowd I’m playing for, there’s always several people who come up after the show to say, “those Dave tunes were awesome!” 29 years I’ve been a huge fan. I haven’t met any of them yet but I know it’ll happen someday. Definitely a bucket list item to sit with Dave and have a conversation or a jam! Thanks for doing this video. He does not get enough credit for his wicked guitar skills or his ability to play crazy shit and sing over it. Cheers!

Grew up on Dave’s music, and think I learned every song he wrote practically when I was 15 or 16. He definitely influenced my guitar playing style, even though I don’t write music in that vein these days. I had a chance to open for him and the band in summer 2018, and it was quite an amazing experience. After the show we went to sell CDs at the Murch tent. Upon coming back to the backstage area my wife nudged me and said “hey, I think that’s Dave over there talking to the festival organizer “. So I urged her to go over, and before I could even say “hey Dave!” He stuck out his hand and gave me a very firm handshake. He told me he watched our entire set from the side of the stage and loved our music/the vocal harmonies. Needless to say I was quite taken aback. We proceeded to have a 10 or so minute conversation, and I felt like I was just talking to a friendly neighbour or something. He was the nicest guy in the world, and when I received the festival footage from our performance that day I found out that he wasn’t lying. There are a few shots where you can see him standing on stage off to the side. Quite an amazing experience, made even better by the fact that one of his roadies told us that Dave and the band wanted to let us watch the show from the stage that night. They gave us headsets so we could hear the in ear monitor mixes, and we were about 20 feet from Carter’s drum Riser. It was a night I will never forget, and certainly made an impression on me in terms of how generous even someone of Daves Fame/fortune can be.

@@MikaelLewisify As an artist with a huge following, he gets respect, but he is usually not mentioned when it comes to great guitar players. And truthfully, he is. It may be because he is mostly just an acoustic player, but I don't really know anyone that plays in the style he plays in with the types of chords he plays. But anyone who plays guitar that tries to play a few of his songs quickly finds out how different and challenging some of his songs can be because it's so different from anything else others do. Tim Reynolds is also amazing. If he was a big songwriter like Dave Matthews, he would definitely be recognized as one of the greats. He's just not known much outside of DMB fans.

I saw DMB at Soldier Field in Chicago right after the Everyday album was released. Buddy Guy opened for them, and later in DMB's set, he came up and jammed with them on "Angel". Dave and Buddy were doing a little cat and mouse with their guitars and it really showed off how much Dave IS NOT a lead guitarist. That being said, I think you can make a strong argument that Dave is the best RHYTHM guitarist ever... Or at least top 3. It's that safe to say?

First time I saw DMB was summer of 93 at Red Rocks (yes 93). The band came on stage at about 4:30 as the opening act for Los Lobos who in turn were the opening act for Big Head Todd and the Monsters. General admission filled up about the first 3rd of the venue, maybe 3000 people. No one knew who they were and no one paid attention when they came on stage. Within 30 seconds of their opening song, Ants Marching, all 3000 of us stopped whatever we were doing, turned toward the stage and stood dumbfounded at the talent. It was fucking amazing. By the following summer, 94, DMB was becoming one of the biggest acts in the world.

Oh man. I remember being a freshman in college when Under the Table... came out. I went to a CD shop in a mall and asked if I could hear the album (they didnt have it on one of the listening stations....remember those?) so the guy put it on the main system in the shop. Literally that opening drum fill on the record had me hooked and I knew I needed it. I was a massive fan ever since, and definitely spent many hours figuring out how to play all those crazy acoustic riffs. I was already a bit of a funky/percussive player on the electric, so hearing someone making POPULAR music with an acoustic guitar and a band doing a similar things was super inspiring to me. I think I ended up seeing them live 17 or 18 times, which I know for a DMB fan isn't actually that much. I kinda moved on to other things when I started discovering bands like Snarky Puppy and Steely Dan and others (late to the party, I know), but I still think that DMB primed my ears to hear that stuff in a way I wouldn't have otherwise. And I am still a fan today... I think their latest record is as good as they've done in a long time.

I have literally been OBSESSED with Dave Matthews Band since 96 when I borrowed my mom"s under the table and dreaming CD. I mean I learned how to play most of his songs on the guitar and started to sing when I play because of his influence. I discovered talents I didn't know I had all because of him and how much I love his music. I remember nearly 30 years ago the first song I learned how to play was crash. Once you got his style and technique down pretty good, learning how to play his songs is always a challenge but doable I found. His playing is very rhythmic and unique and challenging. His vocals fit my own vocal range to a t, he also uses a falcetto often. Vocals are mostly straight tone I don't hear Dave Matthews sing with a vibrato very often at all but it still sounds good probably because of his unique style. It can be a challenge to understand what he is saying at times when he sings. I mean it's been nearly 30 years now I have considered dmb my favorite band.,I have seen them live over 30 times over a time span of more than 20 years. He appeals to all ages I notice especially at his concerts old and young. His music never got old to me and to this day I listen to DMB. HIs voice has held up remarkably well too, you never really hear him omitting high notes when he plays live like other artists often do. He plays rhythm never lead but it's cool complicated but interesting rhythm guitar never the less. Some of his playing is very straightforward and easy while some of it is complicated and challenging. If you don't develop good hand posture fingering his guitar parts your hand will hurt I find. It's hard for me even today to make it through the whole song when playing crash for example my hand tends to cramp up from difficult stretching and being in a odd position I guess. Thanks to Dave I learned how to play and sing thanks Dave so much ! An interesting note on his guitar playing .. he mute strings like a lot. Most of the time while your playing his stuff your only ringing one or two strings at once while your struming all of the. So you will have four muted strings and two fingered much of the time. If a string isn't muted correctly ringing notes that don't belong it sounds terrible. Take the song warehouse for example. That song is MUTE CITY!!

Live at Luther was my introduction to DMB and I was kinds stunned to discover later on that there was a whole band to go with the guy singing! That is still a great album. And yeah, Dave is very underrated as a guitar player. Although here is a bit of trivia for you, per Steve Lillywhite, when DMB recorded their first album he had Dave and Tim play nearly all the guitar parts together and turn Tim up in the mix while turning Dave down! Granted, probably speaks more to Tim's greatness than any real shortcomings with Dave.

As a kid in the early 90s I had never heard a guitar played the way Dave Matthews was playing it. I was hooked. The syncopated rhythms he was playing and singing over, the odd time signatures, and even time changes in songs that I had never heard much outside of jazz and this guy was doing it in pop/rock songs. I was blown away. It was almost too much for my young jr high school mind to take!

Dave Mathews absolutely was the primary influencer my style of music. I'm 28 and I learned how to play acoustic when I was 15 and the very first song I learned how to play was lying our Graves and it took me probably 9 months to go from not knowing anything to be able to play that song and a somewhat recognizable fashion. But his percussive style has had a massive influence on me as I've progressed in my guitar playing and learned more blues and jazz and that's what's beautiful about music. One musician can create a whole new style within someone's brain and it just snowballs from there

Dave was a huge reason why I picked up the guitar as a teenager in the 90's. His sound and style was so different and the chords he used seemed so alien. He has a sound all his own that several others do, when you hear it you know it is Dave. Listener Supported and Live at Luther College got worn out in my house and they still sound fresh today. Tim is a great compliment to Dave's guitar style and voice in that type of setting. I can't really listen to Tim's solo electric projects but when that dude has an acoustic in his hands, wow.

I was in high school when UTTAD came out. Right before that I was really into Hootie and the Blowfish because I learned how to play "Hold My Hand" from Hootie off of when the music video came on MTV. I was like, " This is so easy! I can do this!". I learned to play trumpet in band 4 years prior and switched to baritone when I got braces. My first job was in a music store that sold TAB books, so I got the TAB books for UTTAD and Crash and practiced the hell out of it. Years later I made my first (so far only) album, and the dave guitar influence was so heavy. I don't listen to DMB very much anymore because it's mostly live albums they're putting out. I look at chord progression the way I do because of him.

people tend to sleep on Dave as a guitar player for 2 reasons: 1.) the world class musicians hes always had around him 2.) his unique finger placements and unorthodox playing style. been a fan since the 90’s. In interviews he said something to the effect of when he was starting out playing solo he felt like he needed to hear a drummer hence his early percussive style. I could try my best to play it, but to play AND sing the way he could seemed impossible. Even the DMB Tributes in my area don’t play the way Dave does! man def changed the way a generation looked at the acoustic guitar , did for me and glad to see folks give him is due as a guitarist!

Dmb came out when i was learning to play guitar. I had to go to my local music shop and buy the damn book, which i still have to this day, in order to learn his songs. Yes they were poppy. Yes they were infectious. However, underneath that genius, was a level of technical proficiency i had yet to encounter in music. Not to mention every single dude in his band was absolutely killing their parts. A literal smorgasbord of jam up musicianship. To this day Under the Table and Dreaming is still one of my favorite albums or all time.

I agree with you completely. My 3 biggest influences when I first started playing guitar were Jerry Cantrell, Kirk Hammett, and Dave Matthews. Alice in Chains Unplugged was the reason I picked up a guitar and I cut my teeth on Metallica. But after about 3-4 years, where every song I could play were either root-5 barre chords or power chords,...I got bored. That's when I discovered Dave Matthews and started learning his songs because he uses really unusual chord shapes (I'm pretty sure he made some of them up), plus those really intricate guitar lines made playing fun again for me. Dave also taught me how to play one or two strings while muting the rest . That didn't come out right....for example, take the verse to 'Warehouse'. Listening to it, it sounds like he's playing it like a riff - one note at a time. But if you watch him play it, you see he's strumming the whole time. Being able to strum all the strings but only sounding the one note you want to hear while muting the rest , AND changing the string that rings and those that are muted while playing that line (which spans 5 frets btw), it really shows how truly an awesome guitarist and musician that he is. That's what I learned from Dave Matthews and why I will always call him one of my guitar heroes.

The Chet Atkins was mostly a byproduct of the loud stages and preventing feedback in the late 90s. Once he switched to in ear monitors in 99, he quickly switched to the Martin signature and then got into Taylors around 2000. I think he very rarely played the Chet for solo acoustic shows. He used his "main" 914ce up until ~2012 when he started with Rockbridge, but still had Taylors in rotation for alt tunings even up through 2019 with the W65 12 string and 714e.
