Checked the numbers on McGovern and Mondale's popular votes, Sam was dead on. McGovern got 37.5% in 1972, Mondale scraped 40.6% in 1984. Nobody has dropped that low since, even with Perot dropping the popular vote share of the other candidates in 1992. Knowing stuff like this off the top of his head is why Sam is such a pro.

It is amazing that you could get 40.6% back then and lose 49 states. The numerous red states had to have been their usual 75-25 for Reagan. That means that Mondale lost almost every single Blue state contest in something like a 52-48 manner.
