The fact that companies last year refused to have their laptops be compared to the M1 MacBook Air very much shows just how good the M1 Air was, and still is. It really shows that people who own the M1 Air should not have to worry about missing out on the latest and greatest
@caninac
@caninac 2 жыл бұрын
Yes Apple has some amazing engineers, im not going to say otherwise. However, i think part of why the M1 was so receptive and amazing, was that TSMC's 5nm was pretty much just allocated a huge margin of its production to apple for its first 2-3 years. The latest offerings from AMD laptops, 6nm, are starting to get there, however the true test will be Zen4 vs M1 / M2. Same Node (5nm, and only to some extent each company will have their own internal secret sauce), same year release, different companies. If Apple moves to 3nm at TSMC and secures another huge exclusivity agreement, then that again will keep Apples lead. Regardless of how good the architecture actually is.

Not sure if future proofing is all that great honestly, given the usual use case for users who use it as a web browsing machine, and to read documents, take video calls and what not. They won't be utilizing much space, let alone the ram. M2 is in a weird spot I agree, but would it not make sense to end up just getting the lowest spec machine the next year anyways and still expect it to perform well? Buy used, or certified refurb from Apple and still save some money that way and get good performance.

I really don't understand Apple's pricing strategy. When the M1 first came out, the pricing was unreasonably reasonable. They all were priced to sell, especially the $700 Mac Mini and the Air. Now with the M2, the pricing is just reasonable. You do get a lot of screen, but little RAM and storage for the price.

@@bobweiram6321 I think that might have to do with boosting adoption. If the Air hadn't come at the price it did back then, people wouldn't have adopted Arm based laptops with such open arms (pun intended). Now that people know it's good, it makes business sense for them to charge more?

Got my new M2 MacBook Air 16GB/512GB a few days early this past Saturday. It's a beautiful machine with build quality that's superior to any Dell XPS laptops I've owned. Space Grey looks good. I wanted Midnight but the scratch and fingerprint issues chased me away. I don't record/edit video so it runs smoothly and cool with Office 2021 apps and streaming video. Feels strange using it after over a year with my M1 iPad Pro 12.9" and magic keyboard. I keep reaching for the Air's screen to touch an icon or scroll through a website. Had no idea how acclimated I became with the iPad's touch screen. Same with the iPad’s Face ID vs. Touch ID on the Air. Face ID easily wins that battle. If I made the decision today, I'd return the Air and stick with my iPad + magic keyboard setup. Gotta give it at least a week, though. Never thought I'd be so comfortable with a tablet. Based on my 3 days of use, Apple is gonna sell a ton of these new Airs.

Nice video For the battery tests, do the windows laptops use a low power profile with throttling? I only just used a M2 machine and noticed that the default settings is full CPU power regardless of battery or power adapter; you have to change it over to low power mode on battery manually I noticed a significant difference in battery life between them when the machine was under medium use or more.

Yeah, by default most windows laptops will severely throttle the cpu and gpu when on mobile power. Maybe that’s different for these new ones, which I haven’t tried. At least MacOS has great battery life even in normal mode, and you can choose if to use low power mode.

Fantastic video. Cuts right to the chase and delivers some solid, actionable consumer advice. One thing which wasn't covered was what you should do if you occasionally have Windows use-cases (read: light gaming) in addition to doing all the stuff that ultrabooks are designed to do. Would you still go for the gigachad macbook air and "deal with it" when there are times that you just can't do what you want? Or would you pay for a Windows machine that's going to be slightly worse in most cases, but where you're not having to sweat weird software compatibility issues, etc. etc. For a class of hardware that's now solidly in the $1200-1300 ballpark just to get in the door (aside from the M1 and the HP) I feel like you shouldn't have to make that compromise. 🤷‍♂

M1 Air is a great device! Personally I enjoy the wedge design more than the new one
@savedfaves

I tested the newer 13.6” MBA in a store and I 100% prefer the prior wedge shaped Air design (the 2015 MBA is even thinner at the front than the later wedge shape and yet still has more ports than any new MBA). It’s easier to pickup and carry and it’s MUCH nicer to use, thanks to the low approach angle for your wrists that makes the machine far more comfortable. It’s classic change for the sake of change. Unjustified change. The wedge shape feels more comfortable and looks more advanced. No doubt Apple will return to the wedge shape one day. I believe MBP should also be wedge shaped, albeit a thicker relative wedge. And MBA needs more ports, not more USB-4, but SD Card and HDMI. There are many out there who love thin and light be still require the convenience of not needing dongles without needing great power, giant SSD or large RAM or 120 Hz display. The old MBA (2015/2017) was the best machine out there at the time because it had both wedge thinness and port practicality and a great keyboard and a not too big trackpad (I think trackpads are too big now).

Ryzen 6800U is impressive, keeping in mind it's in a fairly simple cooled machine with just 1 fan, and using 7nm instead of the 5nm node process of the M1/M2. Similar in efficiency to the M2 if we compare Cinebench R23 scores and the power used. Ryzen 7000 series early next year with 4 or 5nm and new architecture generation (Zen 4) will be VERY impressive. Those ones actually competed HARD with the macbook air in its era because of its 3200 x 1800 display and having almost identical dimensions to the MBA. As well as processing power, etc for about the same price and having a touchscreen. For me, the important thing is that in mixed use, Macs stay quiet, cool, and still have decent battery life. I tried G14 this year and they can be dang silent but they ramp up at the weirdest times. When they get going, they’re just as loud as Intel notebooks while not being quite as fast, and they burn through battery quick. Intels are just leaf blowers and have no usable silent mode, but they do give you excellent performance. For me, if you want the fastest, get Intel. If you want the best portable computer, get Apple. If you want a little bit of both, get AMD. Good choices all around.

@mbvglider 2 жыл бұрын
@@SToXC_. I was actually comparing to my MacBook Pro 14", which rarely gets loud, even during video/audio editing, and it has a fan. Even when the fan goes, it's not that loud. For me, the Ryzen was only quiet when doing nothing demanding; as soon as it did need to turn on, it felt no better than an Intel for me because it'd become a leaf blower and burn 10% battery in 15 minutes. Also, you act like "just undervolt the machine" as though it's a single setting, but that's really a matter of spending a lot of time with the computer and understanding exactly where you can do what and when and how. For instance, the G14 has a MUX switch but every time you use it, you have to restart the computer, which means that to go from a performance setup to a silent setup, you need to do a full restart. Meanwhile, my Alienware, the silent profile severely throttled my performance while the balanced profile got too loud way too quickly, so I had to experiment with a fan curve until I found something reasonable. With Windows machines, you're really at the mercy of your manufacturer and how much time you're willing to spend before you reach these reasonable points, whereas with Macs, they just have regular and low power, and regular is still quieter and more efficient than AMD/Intel at silent.

Given the slower 256gb SSD (compared to the same capacity in the M1), by the time you spec it up to 512gb and 16gb of RAM, you might as well just get the 14inch MBP with much better performance and much better screen. thought the same, either the zenbook is amazing or the macbook is overrated, probably both

Yeah I was also surprised. I wonder how well AMD chips will do against M2 and M1 on the same transistor node.

It's actually better I think. Comparable gpu , 10-15% better cpu, OLED screen and yet comparable battery , even on heavy usage not to mention it has much better sustained heavy usage and faster and more storage and ram for the price

Those look like good options. I have a MacBook Air 2015 and it still works great except battery is not the best. I've had Windows laptops before and they don't last long term past about 5 years even if taken care of very well. Not sure what it is maybe they use cheap parts or it's make of plastic. It would be interesting to see how older devices perform 5 years down the road. Long term performance is just as important to me and what I look at as far as how the history of laptop brands.
