Pretty cool trick. I'll admit it worked. We had a Ford 3000 for many years. Fed cows with it. Below 30. Give her a shot of starting fliud. Below 10-15 had a 110 volt mangnet heater. Stuck it on the bottom of oil pan. + Starting fliud. Always did the trick. We hardly ever go below zero where I live how ever!
@Dave775 жыл бұрын
Roger Carrico Nice trick too. Magnet heater... Never heard of it, but I'm sure it gets the job done. Now what I did is kind of a old-school Romanian tractor starting up style. My father taught me. He used to start our UTB tractor this way in the winter.

I love the smell of old tractor diesel fumes. It takes me back to the good old days. Im only 26 but I can imagine old machines like this lovely old gal being a lot easier to service than all the computer controlled stuff of today. Thank you for posting and hope you’re well

Thanks a lot for your comment. Yes, they don’t make them like they used to. Nowadays, tractor manufacturers are more oriented towards electronic systems and software based interfaces that are meant to provide a better operating experience. However, when they happen to break, there’s almost nothing the average person can do to fix it. I prefer the good old tractors. Way more easier to diagnose and fix a problem. Electronics used mostly for the starter, alternator, basic sensors (water temperature, oil pressure) and a proper wiring of the ignition, switches, fuse box and finnaly the lights. That’s the best version of a tractor for me as far as electronics are concerned. Best regards.

Many hours on a Ford 4000 and starting it everyday in some very cold weather to give the cattle hay. Pull throttle half way, pull choke full, push in clutch to lower drag, crank and when it fires push in choke immediately. Started it for many years and never turned over more than twice before starting.

Good video. Here are three ways to help improve cold starting in winter. 1, Add quarter of a gallon of petrol to a full tank of diesel fuel. It thins the diesel, stops it waxing over, makes it burn hotter and makes the fuel more combustible. Do not add more than a quarter to a full tank of fuel because it could damage seals in the fuel system. 2. Add and egg cup full of Acetone to a full tank diesel fuel. Acetone doesn't thin the diesel but it does add Oxygen (Oxygen is trapped inside Acetone) and it makes it more combustible and run a little hotter. Beware adding too much! 3. Make sure the exhaust isn't blocked by snow for example. I consider a full tank of fuel is 11 Imperial gallons so deduct the amounts given accordingly. Be very careful and observe caution at all times. Not advised to set a burning torch on an engine for the reasons cited below. 1. All you are doing is mixing burnt fuel fumes with cold air and that mix is going into the bores and doesn't get a clean start because it partly chokes the fuel air mixture in the bores. 2. Risk of fire spreading! 3, Places soot/carbon deposits in the air intake system which over time will reduce cold air intake. A bit like never cleaning an air filter or changing one.

Amazing comment. I've never heard about these methods before (adding petrol or acetone to the diesel). I don't actually start it up that way all the time as I rarely use it in the winter. But you seem to really know what you're talking about sir, and I want to thank you for your methods, pieces of advice and cautions, all well explained. I hope you liked the video, and sorry for the late reply. ✅ 🙂

Hi @@Dave77 These are methods I have used in the past but one must be careful not to add too much of either and never add Acetone and petrol together into diesel. Only use one or the other. Happy to help you young man if it makes life a little easier for you. Cheers, Jon DingleZilla Esq.

@Dave774 жыл бұрын
Alex MacLean The tractors were for sure simple and reliable back in the days. It is harder to start them in the winter, but not impossible. Thus, that doesn’t mean all of them would start after a hour or so. And the Ford shown in the video hasn’t been started for months. So, I don’t totally agree with your statement.

But oh no! Your modern tractor is broken! Take it to the dealer so they can plug their laptop into it and just delete out the issue, and then charge you more than your house is worth! And uh oh, time for an oil change, to the dealer it goes again, and here comes another 5000 pound bill!

Lived in the snow belt part of the country,truck didn't want to start ,one of the locals said to put cover over the engine and start a fire with charcoal in a pan under the motor,bingo , after a few minutes the motor warmed up and started up,desperate times call for desperate measures.
@PaulHigginbothamSr4 жыл бұрын
this is what they do in India to start reluctant diesel pumps. We here and in Russia, build a small campfire under the oil pan. This fire can't be so large as to coke out the oil, in Russia it is so cold that coking out the oil is not a worry. However here in the New Knighted States we usually use ether. Knowing how to start with ether without destroying the injection pump is critical. Do not spray and then quit with ether still in the cylinders, or you could have a misfire kicking back ruining the engine. Ether works good if you know this.

John Smith With all my respect sir, I don't say it's the most safely method, neither it's the easiest one, but I've been starting tractors this way for a long time. However, if someone without any sort of experience would do this, something bad could happen, though there are less chances, but still. Like I said before, the process should be short, so there's no time for the flame to mess something up. So, I recommend the method, but only for those who have been working on tractors, and know how to deal with it safely. Thank you. 🙂
