Hi Dave Thanks for taking the time to review this excellent model. I remember well the furore over these and HST prototypes, the latter being a treat to "spot" going past my primary school window in somerset (which will account for my lack of concentration at those times). I also remember the nonsense of giving the Journo's a free bar. Hungover Hacks slated the tilting mechanism when in all probability it was them who was wobbly and not the train but the political situation in Britain being what it was, the loudest voices were heard. Then we gave away the technology for free, buying it back at great expense with later stock. Enough of that, you have a grand model, well worth the investment and thanks again. Cheers!

Excellent review Dave, it is a cracking model.. I got mine around 5 weeks ago and it's still in it's box, however after seeing all the videos that people have been uploading on here, I'm beginning to think that I'm the only one that's bought the non sound version. Think it's time I contacted legoman and have the sound put in mine!

A fantastic train and a fantastic model. Thanks for clearing up the reason why one of the power cars had one windscreen wiper and the other had two. Excellent review video Dave... the end was clever! Small criticism....no APT's hold any speed records to this day. The APT-E you reviewed did set a record of 152.3mph in 1975, but this was beaten in 1979 by an APT-P doing 162.2mph, which it held until 1992 when a shortened Mk4 set reached 162mph in 1992. It wasn't until the opening of HS1 (stage 1) was completed in 2003 that the US rail speed record was broken again, when standard maximums of 186mph were achievable for the Eurostar.... ...but a train achieved 208mph during testing of the line. The class 374 'Eurostar e320' trains have a normal maximum speed of 200mph, so we may yet see another UK rail speed record!

If only they all could be fully restored ([both the E and the P] and more - new equivalent parts for old that might boost the performance) and go for a race down the East Coast Main Line (nice and straight, and by chance, near me!). Winner gets to go up against the Eurostar. Imagine all four lines out of Kings Cross being commandeered by them and the Flying Scotsman and full speed! I missed the chance to have a ride on the APT-P, so I'll have to content myself with playing with my OO version and maybe a trip to the Crewe Heritage Museum. Great layout and set up there, Dave.

This train was light years ahead of its time and would certainly of been up there with Concorde (Ha ha ) if they had come into full service. True there were many problems but they were overcome in the end. It was limited in which lines it could run on because of the huge amount of overhang on the nose but they got round that with the Eurostar sets that ran on the East Coast route so could of done the same with these. As for the model I am pleased to see you did not have problems running it through Dean Park. It looks great on your layout with the large radius curves you have. I am sure you will not want to put it back in the box for a while now

I was really impressed with the C.R.T. display for the old computers - can remember them well - used to work for the Dataspace Division of Dataset, @ Newcastle-under-Lyme,which was a wholly owned division within I.C.L. in the early 70's. For the price of the model there should have been some "Boffin's" around the C.R.T. displayed plus some "hanger-on's" in the coach area. would have only need about a dozen "people" to complete the model. Being a U.S. modeler I love Rapido equipment...., however the costs here down-under are horrendously high.... still love 'em.

So CDU is just screwed with the one accessible screw hole? I just got my gauge master CDU's & see only one hole has access with a screwdriver. No cleaning fluid for wheels? Just a brush? Thanks for prompt reply. If I'm asking too many questions tell me to get lost! I get inspired to make the time & get on with it after watching yours & others on KZbin. Thanks.
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 8 жыл бұрын
Hi the Capactior Discharge Unit is wired between the 12/16v power supply and the power wires going to the point motors. The CDU just stores energy to give the points a bit of extra 'kick' when flicking the switch. The CDU will have instructions with it. I just screw the CDU to the underside of the baseboard. Or use sticky back tabs to hold it to the baseboard. Just a brush is fine. I use the track magic with a small cotton bud type thing to clean wheels too.Cheers.

Terrific model. But the mischievous bit of me would want to replace its running noise with that of a steam loco. Imagine people's eyes when this still modern train started chuffing! Good review. Did you have to build it its own siding to avoid taking it on and off the track?
@garystevens4303
@garystevens4303 8 жыл бұрын
Was you station bought off the shelf or have you custom made it? Looks massive. Good realism. Do you use CDU's to power your points? If so how did you fix them to baseboard? Also what is best DIY method you have found for cleaning locos wheels? Cheers.
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 8 жыл бұрын
Hi. thanks for your questions. I will try to answer them!.....ok....1)station is scalescemes kits, but heavily adapted for my needs.2) CDU's on upper level points, (Gaugemaster ones). Lower points will get a CDU fitted this year. It does make a difference!3) Point motors are screwed to the underside of the baseboard. One CDU is fine for the points. One CDU has enough grunt to allow you to throw 6 point motors all at once...but who does that?! lol4) Cleaning wheels....I have a peco brush and scraper which I connect to track, lie loco on its side and clean them that way. However the TRIX or Gaugemaster wheel cleaners look a lot easier, so might invest in one of those! I also wipe the wheels with Deluxe Materials "Track Magic", using the small tools you get when you buy the bottle.Hope this helps?Dave

Bit rich for most of us, lol. But I was just thinking, its motored in power power cars, with sound in both power cars...plus it has two coaches. Another great model and review, the sounds are great as well as the interior detail, how does it go with train travelling in the opposite direction on the corners with such a long over hang?.........Al
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 8 жыл бұрын
Hi....I went about this very carefully....it does clear other trains on the curves (as I laid them allowing for the long MK4 coaches to clear each other), but it only just clears them. Therefore, when the APT-E is running I tend to stop traffic on the opposite line! Just one of the design issues that APT-E presents at 00 gauge! Cheers Al. Dave

Hi, I just recall going on to the Locomotion website and seeing it and thinking 'I'm having some of that!'. When you put it that way, £300 is a steal....your technically getting 2 sound fitting/motor driven locos and two carriages for £325. With £50 for the extra power car! Not bad at all.

I’m not sure if Maggie Influenced the HST project as she was only voted in as Pm in 1979, by which time the HST’s were pretty all delivered to BR. The underfunding for the APT project was under the previous government. However given the amount of tax payers money that had been spent on APT I suspect governments of any colour would have written the project off by the early 80’s. Either way, A real shame for British railways.

You bemoan the union activities of the 70s but without the sacrifices made by trade unionists we would not have the rights at work that so many enjoy today, like paid holiday, bank holidays, weekend pay, maternity leave, sick leave, health and safety legislation and much more. ASLEF, RMT, NUR, and TSSA have a proud tradition of defending workers rights on the railways and the story of railways is more about the men and women that ran the service than it is about the fat cats who sit in their offices counting the cash.
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, I am not bemoaning all union activities, but in the case of the railways in the 1970's (as some other industries) they held the country to ransom. They had, you could argue too much power and in the end brought about their own demise in many cases. As for the railway, they resisted modernisation in many cases. I am not going to get into a political debate about unions. This is a model railway channel. There were no fat cats in British Rail in the 1970's...it was a nationalised industry, so it does not compare to todays railway, which is run for the shareholders.
