+DaveClass47 Hi Dave In this video, as we're watching the signals changing to amber, you say that it hasn't even read the next signal yet. In the real world, the signal would be electronically interlocked so as a train leaves one block (triggering red), it would release the previous one to amber.... because you shouldn't have two trains in any one block at the same time. Since you say it has a variable resistor, I suggest you alter it, so on an average speed, the signal will change to amber a few seconds after the next signal. It's a shame you didn't use DCC for the signals, becasuse you can use free software and block detectors (which are pretty cheap) to interlock the signals automatically, so as one signal is reached (and turns red), the previous one is triggered at the same time (turning amber).

Dave, been watching your channel for a while now, not sure if i have ever commented before. Just wanted to say how helpful your videos are to those of us about to start a layout, in particular i always make a note of the places you buy things from which is invaluable. When you see someone using stuff and get an explanation of what the thing does it makes decisions easier as to who to buy from. Cheers for all the advice you give, look forward to seeing more from you.

+Paul Norman Hi, thanks so much for your comment. I make a deliberate effort to list the places I buy things and what brands they are....as I found it deeply frustrating when I was starting out back in 2012 that people showed me things on their videos but never told me much about them. You then have to trouble them by asking!I will give me opinions on things I have bought, both good and bad and hopefully that will allow people to make their own judgements before they purchase similar items. I can only warmly thank you for your comment, it is really pleasing to know my ramblings are useful to some! All the very best. Dave

Well what can I say that has not already been said, another great video with lots of detail and especially lots of explanations as to how things work, this is what I really like about your videos you take the time to explain where you get certain things, how they are installed and how they work, the one thing that I have learned from your videos is to just take my time, if I had done that at the beginning of my layout then I would not be doing what I am doing now and that is going back over things and doing them properly this time, l suppose I am learning the hard way but never mind as I am looking forward to your next update to see what else I have done wrong.....lol, Happy Easter.

Excellent, EXCELLENT video!! Your layout is stunning with the finest in detail. From day one some many years ago, I've always found the model railway layouts and designs in the U.K. particularly inspiring. I've seriously developed a love for the OO-gauge train sets as I now proudly own a Hornby Virgin Pendolino Class 390 and a Bachmann Virgin Voyager Class 221 that whenever I run either of them at my HO club, it makes the other members stop and take notice as well as photos (I have videos of both and our beautiful layout on my channel bhigdaddymark). I'm from New York City and therefore a huge subway fan and have NYC subway models in both HO and O scale. My next must have set is the gorgeous London Underground set by Bachmann and the Class 350. Thank you for the continued fine work on your layout and especially your fine camera work in filming your trains all of it inspires the best in all of us. Cheers from NYC and Orlando, Florida!

Hi Dave, fantastic series -- keep going. A mixture of the how-tos and the running makes for some really interesting watching. Also, can I commend you on the amount of videos you've released. Great to see so much content covering all aspects. First class work. My only comment I have is the track around the main station feels clean. I don't have a layout myself, so my opinion isn't worth much, but with the diesels idling and with the tracks being as busy as they are, I'd have though the track would be utterly stinking! There was a video earlier in your series also, where you show the east throat to the station and foliage on the near-wall - excellent work. My thought as I was watching was -- could you darken the retaining walls with an air gun, especially toward ground level and grime up the corners? Keep up the effort. Top work.
@DeanPark8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Hi, thanks for that, about the walls....I wasn't confident with the airbrush when I built the walls...maybe in time I will do something. Yeah, some of the tracks can do with more weathering....all in good time. ;-) Thanks for your comment and encouragement. I always enjoy suggestions on how I can improve things. Cheers. Dave

Hi Dave, great update and running session. Just one question about the signalling, I understand fully about programming each signal to change colour at timed intervals once a train has triggered the sequence, infant I have done so myself. What I don't quite understand the advantage of joining each signal to the next one as you said, I am probably missing something, but you said the train has passed and the sequence has started and would continue even if the train stopped and in fact before it even reached the next signal. So why do you need them connected (via the green wire)? Robin
@DeanPark8 жыл бұрын
+Milton Mo Junction Hi, sorry I didn't make that very clear.If you have 3 signals in the sequence you would use ONE mas sequencer board, which would go through the sequence after the train has passed. The other two signals would require just a IRDASC4 board, which will not automatically go through a sequence. In other words, if a train passes the IRDASC4 sensor the signal would go to red, but will not go to yellow until the next signal is passed. When the train passes the 3rd signal this signal would then go to green again (I am using 3 aspect signals as an example here).The benefit of the mas sequencer is that at least one signal will return to green if there are two trains running on the line....however you could just go for a set of 3 IRDASC4 boards and not have a mas sequencer. I just took the example given and recommended by Heathcote Electronics. They are really helpful for explaining what you want and they give good advice.So in summary, buy connecting the signals with the green wire it allows them to work in sequence as opposed to three individual signals. If you are running more than one train on the line then connecting them would be more realistic as on signal would not go from red to yellow until the next signals are passed. I hope I have made this semi clear? lol. Hope this helps.Dave
@MiltonMoJunction8 жыл бұрын
+DaveClass47 Hi Dave, yes understand completely now thanks for that. As I said it was probably me, getting old and brain cells are starting to die off, but I kept watching that bit of the video and did not pick up on it. Robin

Great update and running session. Just wondering, what is the height of your wood piece that you use between the lower section and the upper section. I'm trying to figure what height to use between my lower session and upper session.on my layout once I begin construction....
@DeanPark8 жыл бұрын
+Niagara OO Junction Model Railway Hi, I had this dilemma too. I went for 95mm from baseboard to upper track level. Why?, well it suited the Scalescene tunnel mouths I was wanting to use at the station and with the height of the overhead masts etc I was planning on using this gave enough clearance. The wills retaining wall arches are lower than this, so I cannot use them, which is a bit of a shame, but I feel 95mm is a good height. Each to their own though! Hope this helps. Dave
@johna.dawson7098 жыл бұрын
+DaveClass47 thanks Dave for the info... Just starting to plan my layout, and i want to make sure i get the correct height or at least a height I can run trains under and between levels. The first lvl will be my fiddle yard and the second lvl will be the main line, with an upper area for town and large station scene...John.

Brilliant video Dave. I have to admit I am a bit of a geek when it comes to light signals. For that reason I went straight onto the Heathcote website and started reading up! Can I ask, have you looked into using the IRDASC-5s at all? They are the same as the ones you are using but also have the ability to stop a train at red. This is something I am interested in playing with. What are your thoughts?
@MxWintersAFOL8 жыл бұрын
Those signal controllers seem a bit much to run a set of signals. Personally I'd use an Arduino Mega and connect all the signals and all the IR or LDR sensors to one single board. You do have to program the Arduino with code but there is millions of code examples online so that's no problem but it would mean that you can program it to do exactly what you need it to do. You technically could connect all the signals to one Arduino andd all point motors to a second Arduino (through transistors) and then link to the two together via the serial ports so you could link the signals to the point movements as the case in real life. The Arduino Mega is only £30.24 inc VAT from Rapid Electronics (exc shipping). I love the Arduino boards, their simple, cheap, easy to program (even for someone like me who can't program) and they're powerful for what they are. I have an Arduino Mega acting and an Analog to DMX512 converter for my lighting desk and lighting rig (only true lighting engineers have a lighting rig at home) and my 3D printer has the same Atmel 2560 chip on its controller PCB. Adafruit do a mini version of the Arduino Uno called the Adafruit Pro Trinket which is great for mini projects like wearables and it's only around £10. I going to start teaching my 6 year old niece how to use an Arduino at some point. Hell, the worst that can happen is she blows a £10 PCB...Big deal and cheaper than most of her toys. Sorry I'm going a little off topic now.

@DeanPark8 жыл бұрын
+Bruce Henderson Hi, my curves are no tighter than 3rd radius, they usually hare 30" to 36" to 42" radius. Some curves have more transition than others, because as you'll understand I am sometimes limited with space and width. The cork underlay is 1/16" thick. The foam on the outer of the curves to give it banking are bought from tillig. They are cut at an angle to give a slight but realistic angle as the train goes around the curve. Hope this helps! Cheers. Dave

Great video as always, I'm jealous that I don't have the funds and space like you do. Yes the Scottish traffic can be a pain, but I think it's a fair trade in. I've been watching your videos since your platform was brand new, and you had no overall roof, even back to when your lower level wasn't complete! You have progressed so well over the past years, can't wait for you to do some proper scenic sections, it will work a treat I know it. Also, could you invest in a camtruck? It will be such a good addition to your layout! Many thanks, Brad
@DeanPark8 жыл бұрын
+Bradthebilder 222 Hi, yes I have come a long way and I am thankful for your support over the months and years.I still have the space, and I used to have the funds....but with the rapid increase of prices recently I am finding it more expensive....when will it all stop?, this hobby will become for the rich and famous, sadly I am neither!Cam truck is on my LONG shopping list lol. Maybe one day.Warm personal regards.Dave
@Electra_12038 жыл бұрын
+DaveClass47 I see what you mean about prices. As a student with a cramped apartment, a 6' x 2' end to end is all I have room for, a dim going to have to hinge the board if I want an extra foot, as it would be handy if I can actually open my front door, they do come in handy sometimes :p my only worry is if I'm using the extension, as it stretches under my letterbox, the poor cows might get a shock when my water bill falls on their heads... I've already invested nearly £500, with my family putting in an extra £300 in its first 4 months of life. £800 has got me my track, half of my stock, the board, the buildings and my platforms. But not one blade of grass has gone down yet, let alone any hills. Yes.... This hobby isn't for the faint of heart. Wow, now thinking about it, if £800 = 30% completion on a 6 x 2 board, £????? = Quad loop of loft size board + near completed station and TMD + God knows how many locos and stock, I bet your wife gets a bit fed up of this sometimes lol - Brad
@DeanPark8 жыл бұрын
Bradthebilder 222 I have over 35 locos, 150 carriages and 35 wagons (all bought in the last 3 1/2 years) - and counting! I have over 120m of track, 40+ turnouts, over 300m of wire (so far) and god knows how much money I have spent! The attic required flooring, lots of ply for the baseboards, new lighting, electrical power, silver lining insulation, power units for the tracks, accessories, along with loco decoders, point motors, etc etc etc etc. The list is endless (its actually making me depressed listing all of this, as I could have had a round the world cruise on the QM2 with the money I have spent!). BUT, in saying that, I LOVE THIS HOBBY. And spending money and time on it a real privilege and I thank my stars I am lucky enough to be able to do it. I hope you enjoy the hobby as much as I do, its in my blood and I wish you every successes with your layouts now and in the future. They will only get bigger....and more expensive! lol Dave
@Electra_12038 жыл бұрын
+DaveClass47 thanks for the advice, you are very lucky to have what you do, I know many people who would trade anything to have this. It's quite natural to loose track of how much you've spent, comparing it to other items or getting depressed at listing everything, it's a common syndrome called Modellers Syndrome. Most people watching your videos suffer from this harmless case, as well as thousands more around the UK. There is no known cure, because you love this hobby too much. Your wife/girlfriend might get fed up, but try and encourage Modellers Syndrome in her. Also, when kids come into the picture, Take them to heritage railways. It's how I got quite a severe case of Modellers Syndrome. But for now, I must care for my poor cows who are getting constant headaches from damn water bills. Cheers, Brad
