When most people think of classic Hanna-Barbara cartoons they think of the Flintstones or even Scooby Doo now, but it can't be understated how important the Huckleberry Hound show was and how big Yogi was to the studio's success moving forward. Without Yogi I don't know if they would have continued to create iconic characters for TV. Great work as always Dave!

It’s honestly a trip how Yogi Bear started the idea of theatrical animated movies based on television shows. If it weren’t for Yogi we wouldn’t have The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, The Simpsons Movie, The Powerpuff Girls Movie, A Goofy Movie, The Chipmunk Adventure, Teen Titans Go: To The Movies, South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, Ducktales: The Movie - Treasure of the Lost Lamp, My Little Pony: The Movie, Paw Patrol: The Movie, Clifford’s Really Big Movie, Recess: School’s Out, Teacher’s Pet: The Movie, and Bob’s Burgers: The Movie. It’s quite fascinating now that I realize what it started.

They totally should've starred Ranger Smith (the self-appointed rule-lover) with Yogi there for comedy relief and doing things the "wrong" way, with Ranger Smith then showing kids the right/safe way. That'd make way more sense at least!

One strange bit of Yogi history I'd also like to mention is the Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera ride at Universal Studios. It was a motion sim ride like Star Tours at Disney, but with HB worlds and characters. Yogi pilots your ship, and you're chasing after Dick Dastardly who just kidnapped Elroy Jetson. Only rode the ride once, but I have a lot of nostalgia for it.

As much as I love the original shorts and all, my favorite versions of the character were in Treasure Hunt and Jellystone. Treasure Hunt is an underrated series with a lot of pre-Animaniacs writing staff, and you could tell. It was certainly a hipper, fresher, and funnier version of the characters than Yo Yogi ever tried to be. All it took for that series to work while Yo Yogi failed was updating the writing and humor and keeping the characters their classic selves. Actually, I'd say a lot of 80's H-B was underrated, and some of their weirdest, wildest shows were in that era. As for Jellystone, there's something about the series that couldn't and shouldn't work, but does and beautifully. If any Yogi stuff seriously cracked me up, it's those two shows and the Easter Bunny movie. Well, if you include unintentionally, also Galaxy Goof Ups. That's a freaking fever dream.

What I wouldn’t give for a high-quality BluRay release of Hey There its Yogi Bear. It’s a real shame that such a beautiful movie is trapped in blurry SD. For me, that film represents a best case scenario for taking a UPA-style limited animation series to the big screen. So many of the production limitations are gone, but it still respects the characters and never pushes them too far beyond the style they were designed for. The result is character animation that really sings, with some truly lavish and stylised backgrounds.

I’d love to see Warner Animation Group produce a fully-animated Yogi Bear movie titled “Yogi Bear” (not to be confused with the live-action/animation hybrid movie of the same name) in which Yogi and Boo-Boo get shipped to the San Diego Zoo after one of Yogi’s shenanigans goes wrong and the two along must escape back into the wilds of Jellystone National Park along with other animal characters that need escaping such as Wally Gator, Magilla Gorilla who must rightfully belong in the wilds of Africa, and a few other animal characters! The classic cartoons of Yogi and his pal Boo Boo with Ranger Smith and sometimes Cindy will always be my favorites but I did enjoy the 80's Yogi Bear Show that had the newer ones. My favorite Yogi media will always be "Hey There, It's Yogi Bear" theatrical movie. I still remember seeing for the first time either on TV back in the day and later on when it aired on Cartoon Network's Cartoon Theater. I wished I still had the recording of it. I also went to the Theaters when the live action CGI hybrid came out and enjoyed it every bit of it. Just like David said it stayed true to the original story lines of the 60's show. I thought Dan and Justin did a great job in doing their voices. To me I at first didn't know till reading a review later on that it was Dan Akyryod and Justin Timberlake. I had thought I read there was going to be a squeal but I guess it didn't do too good. I would love to see a live action hybrid Yogi's Ark or Yogi's Space Race or Galaxy Goof-Ups or even a reboot with new animation or an animated Yogi Bear movie. Either way I love me some Yogi and friends. Again David you are always top notch when doing these videos and I enjoy them all. Thanks again and can't wait for more to come.

A famous bear with a India name he inhabits the notorious Yellowstone "Jellystone" national park... which is actually one of the most destructive volcanoes in the entire world. Ancient YOGI undoubtedly inspired the incredible Disney epic Gummi Bears and Boo Boo is clearly the forerunner of KIT Cloudkicker in TaleSpin.

One other Yogi thing I don’t believe was mentioned here was from 1990 to 1993 Nickelodeon's Most Wanted: Yogi Bear aired on Nickelodeon. Yogi Bear cartoons (which by then, along with the rest of H-B's catalog, had been acquired by Turner Entertainment Co.) moved to Cartoon Network. The Yogi’s cartoons on Nickelodeon would be a mix of Yogi cartoons from The Huckleberry Hound Show and The Yogi Bear Show, and the last two were newer shorts made for The New Yogi Bear Show. In addition, some episodes were half-hour episodes of Yogi's Gang, Yogi's Space Race, Galaxy Goof-Ups and Yogi's Tresure Hunt. (From wikipedia.) Another interesting thing about the Yo Yogi! Series, featured episodes, or parts of episodes, in 3D, with Kellogg's Rice Krispies offering 3D glasses. Generally, the 3D scenes were chase scenes of the variety made famous by Hanna-Barbera in the Scooby-Doo series. At the beginning of these 3D sequences, Yogi would spin his hat atop his head, as a cue to viewers to don their 3D glasses.

The only "Yogi Bear" installment I owned was the 90s Easter special, although I did see several other productions over the years. I've watched a few classic shorts, some of the crossover specials, his appearance in "The Good, the Bad and the Huckleberry Hound," the Aladdin segment in "Scooby Doo and the Arabian Knights," cameos in various other shows, and several episodes of "Jellystone." Speaking of "Arabian Nights," the fact that both Yogi and Boo-Boo play the genie role is pretty clever since the original Aladdin story featured two genies (one in a lamp and the other in a ring).

Kinda funny, Yogi Bear and the Pink Panther were created due to similar circumstances. Explanation: Just like MGM did, Warner Bros. came to the same money-saving conclusion, "We have enough cartoon shorts made already, we don't need to pay for anymore. We'll just re-run what we have and close down our animation studio." So, now all of Warner Bros. animation personnel were out of a job. (Incidentally, renowned Warner Bros. animation director, Chuck Jones, would end up at Hannah-Barbara.) Two (other) former Warner animation employees, Friz Freleng and David DePatie would also form their own animation studio: "DePatie-Freleng Studios." This would be the studio that would create the "Pink Panther," originally for the purpose of an animated opening title sequence for the live action film, "The Pink Panther" (starring Peter Sellers.) The character was so popular in the sequence, DePatie-Freleng Studios decided to make a series of shorts starring the cartoon panther. By the way, DePatie-Freleng Studios technically still exists today, only it has a new name (given to the studio by the company that bought the studio from DePatie and Freleng) that company being Marvel Entertainment, (the studio now integrated into the combined "Marvel Studios," which is now technically owned by Disney, so, yeah, cartoon go around is a funny thing in of itself.) Fyi, Marvel acquiring the studio came about due to DePatie-Freleng Studios being the animation studio hired to create the first Spider-Man animated series, "The Amazing Spider-Man" as well as follow-up series, "Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends."

Great history of Yogi. I wasn't born till the 60s and only got to see most of the classic early stuff as part of repackaged series. The endless variations of Wacky Races didn't float my boat much as a kid. My favorite Yogi is when he appeared in a comic book called "Yogi Bear Visits the United Nations" which was likely a propaganda attempt to get more US folks on board with the UN (I understand it was controversial in the 50s) but nowadays looks like a giant WTF

The first version of Yogi that I ever sawm was Yogi's Gang in 1973 when I was 6, I was too young to know at the time that it was NOT the original. I was a bit surprised that “Hey there, Yogu bear” was the first animated movie to be based off an existing animated series. Which is cool because the SpongeBob SquarePants movie is goated.

I love that "Yogi Gang", the show that tried to crush bigotry starred a stereotype villain "greedy genie"!

You see, I'd always thought Yogi was named after John Logie Baird, inventor of the TV. No idea why I thought that though

Not sure what you mean by "no one" when I made and narrated this video alone. This was not a video about the evolution of Boo-Boo or Cindy or Ranger Smith... it was a video about the Evolution of Yogi Bear.

I am still waiting patiently for the day Dick Dastardly and Muttly cartoon evolution arrives.... Loved this episode btw. I didn't realize HOW popular Yogi was. I just enjoyed his shows but didn't know he had this many shows/specials.

Muttley actually started out as the character Mugger, owned by the Chizzling Brothers who have a temporarily run-down circus business… until it’s revived by kidnapping Cindy Bear for a high-wire act in “Hey There It’s Yogi Bear”(1964). Don Messick even did his iconic sniggering laugh which would also be used in other HB characters later, such as Precious Pupp on the “Atom Ant” tv series.

When I was a teen my mom met a man who would end up being her husband and was a wonderful, funny and generous person. We use to kid around a lot and my mom would try to settle us down ( oh what great memories) somehow I became known as Yogi, him as BooBoo and my mom as ranger Smith. I'm 50 now and he just passed away this February and I still call him BooBoo (my kids also call him that) my next tattoo will be of these characters in his honor.
