I took Magnus Mitdbø new routing in Scotland. Obviously I knew the weather would be wild, but not that wild!

Im not hardcore climber but I climbed outside in the Calanques (France) as a kid where its always very windy, and that comment on the conditions making you forget fear kinda rings true to me, I wasn't the most courageous climber but having to fight the conditions sometimes made me forget the height or whether I was above my last clip yet or not lol

Now I understand *why* there are so many unclimbed faces in Scotland 😅 As much as I love climbing, I'd never be outdoors trying anything in such weather, but there those beasts are, taking it all with a smile on their faces haha This type of resilience is a very good trait to have to be as great at climbing as they are.

I think the wideboyz need to have a discussion about daves weather grading system. Dave has given todays weather the D grade of 5. If thats the case ive never even been sport climbing in D1 conditions.
@durabelle
@durabelle Ай бұрын
That would be a good conversation. D10 conditions are quite clear, but what would a D9 or D7 be? If bags escaping and trailers falling over isn't enough for even a D6, what needs to happen for the higher grades? Belayer needing to anchor themselves to the ground? Trailers actually flying?

I noticed something as you were walking near the burn (creek). You had the straps of your walking poles over the top of your hands. This can cause a problem if the lower end of the pole gets stuck (in a bush etc.) and the pole can pull out of your hand due to your forward momentum. The strap pulls down on the thumb and can sprain, dislocate or break your thumb. My right thumb has less mobility due to doing this when skiing. The correct way is to hang the poles on the wrists by the straps, then lower the hands onto the handles with the straps going into the palms. Hope this saves at least one thumb. Thanks.
@pavolk

I was also surprised that this absolute master of attention to detail was using his poles sub-optimally.
@craigbritton1089
@craigbritton1089 Ай бұрын
Been doing it for decades; never a problem. One can set it up with a wrap so one can press down on the straps and rely much less on the fingers gripping the pole;
