Most preworkouts have ridiculously high doses of caffeine (400mg per scoop isn't unheard of) but they differ in how much they deliver of other random supplements like arginine, l-citrulline, carnitine, beta-alanine, etc which give preworkout blends more effects beyond pure stimulation.

The point i think Macleod is trying to make is, that most people who decide to consume plant protein over animal do it to avoid the meat industry, which they don't.

Creatine short list for people that have no clue: -Some people are non-responders (somewhere around 20% of population). -You don't need to time it, just take around 5G/day. After a month you'll see any benefits -Weight gain is water. That goes away with time and can be manipulated with diet. -Main benefit is basically increased ATP reserves. In short, you recover quicker from max effort movements and can (generally) output more power longer -It's not a miracle, but you could see a notable performance improvement. If your diet is trash, you don't sleep well, etc. - it's negligible For steroids/gear - don't do it. If you do, you should be getting at least monthly bloodwork and work with an expert. It's generally illegal (depending on country) - and even if you're careful, you should assume you're cutting your life short to perform better for a few years.

How I understood it was that the only reason to favour the plant based protein over whey or meat is the environmental /animal cause. If that’s your motive, it’s good to know its flaws. Now if you wanna think that having people packed in huge city eating food coming from miles away and using the money they make to fly/drive far away at any opportunity is better than staying mainly in the countryside even though you might use a bit more heater in the winter good for you. I was also speaking not of all cities but of those huge metropoles full of people. I must admit though that I’m not so aware of the life in the uk. Hence my first sentence. @@samr2733 I think what bothers me is that he does also speak about the benefits of eating meat (specifically keeping cows) on soil health and reps it as an enviromental positive, but the reality as you allude to is that most people do not live where he lives, and cannot source their meat from grass fed cows. I think his McDonalds experiement was also to demonstrate that people who are unable to afford/source the meat he does could just buy fast food meat patties and do the same. But Maccy's are responsible for a huge amount of rainforest destruction for ranching space, amongst all the other shite things they do. I feel like he has some blind spots in his dietary beleifs, and I think the fact that he then encourages others to follow his same diet is dangerous for the environment, potentially people's health, definitely the welfare of animals. Plant protein should be WAY above Whey (pun intended), especially if the reason for lowering plant protein is out of environmental reasons: "Results from our review suggest that the vegan diet is the optimal diet for the environment because, out of all the compared diets, its production results in the lowest level of GHG emissions." - Which Diet Has the Least Environmental Impact on Our Planet? A Systematic Review of Vegan, Vegetarian and Omnivorous Diets "Despite substantial variation due to where and how food is produced, the relationship between environmental impact and animal-based food consumption is clear and should prompt the reduction of the latter." - Vegans, vegetarians, fish-eaters and meat-eaters in the UK show discrepant environmental impacts "Concerning regional food, intuition suggests that shorter transports result in lower environmental impacts. However, transport only represents on average a small fraction of emissions during the life cycle of food products (Ritchie and Roser, 2020). For most simple products, the agricultural production phase is responsible for a major part of GHG emissions and other environmental impacts on biodiversity and soil quality (Nemecek et al., 2016). Thus, the environmental benefit from the regional production of food is estimated to be relatively small compared to a meat-free diet." - Eat local to save the planet? Contrasting scientific evidence and consumers' perceptions of healthy and environmentally friendly diets "A study published last year shows just how critical cutting meat production is in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The study found that 57% of global greenhouse gas emissions from food production come from meat and dairy products. Beef contributes the most global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the study. Just 29% of food-related global greenhouse gas emissions come from plant-based foods." - A Vegan Diet: Eating for the Environment Apparently KZbin doesn't allow external links in comments (pretty dumb), so I've had to include titles instead.

The discussion around marijuana was actually really interesting albeit short, but one thing that's sort of intangible about the plant when I use it in my climbing (12b/c, V6-8) is feeling centered in my body. Like any of these other supplements, you can dose it so that you're receiving primarily the benefits (high focus on a single task, mild muscle relaxant, anxiety relief) without many of the known drawbacks (mental and physical lethargy, lower cognitive focus). In many cases, climbing on a low dose often makes me feel more attentive to my movement and body position than I otherwise may be in difficult positions like cruxes on projects. I'd say it's subjectively beneficial and warrants some further investigation without writing it off of the list completely.

Just saying, it's not what you think. edit: Nvm, after seeing him recommend red meat and eggs I think Alex might actually know more about nutrition than Dave does. They are both 'just' climbers, only one calls himself a nutrionist and the other just eats healthy.

Since you mentioned environmental issues from some supplements early in the video, I feel the need to say that the same goes for salmon. I can pretty much guarantee that all the salmon you can find in stores is from salmon farming - not wild salmon. Fish farming has a horrible impact on both the fish you eat and the local environment. Here in Norway where I'm from, fish farming (and specifically salmon) has pretty much killed all the life in our fjords, polluting them with diseases, excrement from the fish, and trash (including a lot of plastics). The huge difference between waste from a farm on land and that from a fish farm, is that ocean currents spread it out over a massive area. In addition, this completely covers the seabed - blocking fish from their food source. For the salmon in the farms, things are even worse. There have been several investigations by both media and authorities revealing that companies hide mass casualty events in their farms where tens of thousands of fish died from various causes - and that those fish later was sold in stores (sometimes even marked as "premium" products). If you regularly eat salmon from the store, I'm willing to bet that you've eaten a fish that died from diseases instead of being slaughtered. I should also mention that the way salmon is slaughtered is by cooking them alive, giving them huge burn wounds in the process. As someone who has grown up close to these Norwegian salmon farms, I actively avoid eating their product.

No mention of Mag Juice or Mag Dust? I've been butt chugging Mag Juice just for fun, but wondering if it's good for me?

The argument that plant protein is more wasteful to produce is completely fraught. 80% of global agricultural land use is used for (feed for) animals, which produces 20% of global calories. So animal protein sources are far, far more wasteful than plant protein sources. Of course the whole pea is not used to produce protein powder, but that doesn't mean the rest is wasted. The other components are used for other products, including animal feed of course, or pea soup etc.

Seemed somewhat odd that he glazes over whey proteins emissions and takes points off for the plants. Whey protein is estimated to be 9-12kg CO2e per kg, while pea protein is 1-3kg. There are legit grievances with pea protein, they are usually more expensive and you need a higher volume for the same protein content also in my opinion the taste is worse.

Good video. Wish you would have asked about the “hydration” sups like LMNT. I find them to be overpriced salt 🤷♂️. Keep at it sir!

Plant protein doesn’t rebuild muscle tissue, use egg, micellar casein, milk or whey proteins. In that order or a blend of those

Great video. Would have loved to hear him talk about caffeine as a general drug/tool but super interesting stuff. Time to buy more eggs and salmon.

not sure if Dave will respond to comments here, but what about algae oil instead of fish oil due to its superior environmental impacts? I've heard it's better for you actually, like taking out the middle man (the fish) and less likely to cause the gross burbs / digestion issues.

I think coat is an issue. With the exception of some premium high priced algae oils, many simply have much less EPA/DHA in which are the key parts of the omega 3. For example I take a high EPA/DHA fish oil that costs about a tenner a month - to get the same levels from algae where I live I'd need to spend 3-4x that amount.
@climbermacleod5 ай бұрын
Take algae n3s if you like but be careful to see that you are getting the sufficient dose - many (perhaps all, but I'm happy to be shown otherwise) supplements have low amounts of DHA/EPA per serving. Middle men in ecosystems are a good thing!

I think everyone concerned with their level of protein intake should watch the Zoe episode with Christopher Gardner. Basically the recommended values are above the optimal values for 90% of the population, but thats done on purpose so that it can meet the needs of 90% of the population, but it also means 10% are falling short, and it's different from person to person. What they arrive at is that, on average, everyone is already getting more than enough protein.
