Wonderful work Dave, you're a treasure, thank you for sharing. I've dabbled with pastel and pencil portraits off and on for the past 20 or so years. That's a good lesson, I hope I can put it to practice, I'm new to pastels and I'm still just experimenting with some soft pastels and different kinds of paper, I've had good success many years ago when I practiced with pastels, I'm going to get some pastel pencils, some Panpastel and some other kinds of papers, now I just need to practice the various techniques, but it's a fun pastime and the results are often surprising.

How do you sharpen your pencils? Thanks so much for this wonderful portrait and all the instruction. Could you do this portrait with Stabilio Carbothello alone (and just the two white pencils) or do you need Caran D Ache ones also?
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt 5 ай бұрын
You would need a fresher white, either a Caran d'Ache Chinese or Azurite white. You could use the Faber Castel white I tend to use that more now, then use your CarbOthello pencils with them. Regarding sharpening pencils, watch this video I show you how. Here is the link... kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYqqp4CQYrNjoNk All the best 🙏

Just amazing brother. One question : when you feel like your finished with the detail stage would you say that all the little grey holes of the pastelmat are gone ? Sometimes i keep going until all the paper is covered and sometimes that looks plastic
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt 7 ай бұрын
Hi Dave, because I work in layers, the grey colour of the pastelmat acts as a desaturation for colours in some of the midtone and the shadow areas. All the pastelmat is covered... there is more pigment in some areas than others. The reason it might look plastic is that the tooth of the pastel mat has gone... I always leave enough tooth for the subtle details to grab on to. All the very best 🙏

Hi,love your videos,I mainly do portraits with colored pencils,but I can use the same techniques for pastel pencils to colored pencils right? I was also interested in starting with soft pastels soon. What’s are your main soft pastel sets that you recommend me getting? Thank you! God bless.

Thrilled you love my videos Julia... yes the technique would work the same for coloured pencil if you use pastelmat as your surface. I would recommend the CarbOthello set... than buy a single Carand'Ache Chinese white and a Faber Castell 101 white. All the very best 🙏

Hi Dave, I like your portrait very much! 😊 Do you use the fixative to protect your portrait? Some artists don't use it, because sometimes it can alter the hues of the pigments, especially with soft pastels. Thanks, Silvia
@DavePortersArt

Hi Silvia, I don't like to use fixative as it dulls colours. If I am storing the work I wrap it in Glassine paper. I also frame under a mount and glass. Take care... all the best 🙏

Excellent, but what finish can be used(like a fixative for ordinary pencils),is there something like a transparent finish, that gets hard and protects them?Bc pastel is pretty fragile and 'catches' a lot of dust,hair etc.I am talking about soft,oil pastel, like i use.
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt 5 ай бұрын
The surface we use makes all the difference... I have an allergy to dust, Pastelmat seem to grab the pigment and hardly any dust is created. I frame my work under glass /mount or store them wrapped in glassine paper. thanks for watching🙏

@@DavePortersArt i ve used an acrylic spray by Maimeri,gave them a nice glossy surface, but its soft like rubber.Fortunatly no milky water effect when it dried out. Heard that glue can be used for a harder surface finish?

Why not use a projector to lay down the lines? It would save a lot of time, right? Is there any advantage to only freehand the sketch? Is it just to impress viewers or do you actually enjoy to do that?
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt 7 ай бұрын
Hi Andrerios, I love the freedom of freehand, it does take more time but worth it and I am always drawing as I go and adjusting making it more spontaneous and free flowing . I feel if you use a projector you really haven't created it... just coloured it in. I know when I cross reference the outline it makes my feel tighter and not as free to change things up. There is some great artists out there that just use a projector and what they produce is awesome... but still, I feel more connected and less controlled by using freehand method... thanks for your massage... all the very best. 🙏

I used to use a projector because I wanted my work to look exactly like the reference photo. That was important especially when I was copying a famous image like Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring. But, I put my projector away years ago because with practice,my ability to see relationships and proportions improved!

Hello, I have a question about pencils : yours don't seem to be very sharpened. I've just followed an internship in an exhibition, and we had to use very long lead and sharp pencils. Is this your preference for this demo, or you never sharpen very much?
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt 7 ай бұрын
Hello... thanks for the question... some brands sharpen better than others. I tend to use the side of the point to find an edge then keep turn the pencil to find another edge. If I need a really sharp point I use CarbOthello or Faber-Castell... caran d'ache are really temperamental as the lend easierly cracks.

All the painters seem to focus on painting portraits of beautiful young women it just seems unfair to everyone else. It is more interesting to draw or paint faces of imperfect people of older age. The sagging skin and wrinkles are much more interesting to paint.
