Man this episode got me. My Dad bought a brand new 2003 dodge ram. He had one accident back in 2009, this was at a time I really was wanting to fix and work on a truck. We worked on it together and got it back up and running. That truck has had 0 issues over the years. Well he passed away day after christmas 2022. That truck has been sitting for the past year and a half and im working on getting the title so i could bring it back to glory. The only problem is its going to be tough emotionally to work on it again. But thank you Dave you really do remind me of my Dad in every aspect, its like watching my own Dad working on this stuff. Truly one of my favorite youtube channels! Keep the videos coming it means a lot more to some of us!

I remember when helping my Dads amazing diesel technician rebuilding a number of Cummins 220/250 old school straight sixes, I believe we’re 855ci, the 220 was NA, the 250 turbo. When we were getting ready to install the new sleeves into the block we placed them in the walk in freezer, with a kerosine torpedo heater blowing on the block. Then he would carefully install the o rings on each sleeve just before we were able to just drop them directly in the block with only a gentle nudge with a rubber boot heal hammer. When all completed these engines ran for hundreds of thousands of miles longer. These were some learning experiences for me. I discovered that the bolted on bell housing/rear engine mount, that also included the starter mount, required a dial indicator to center to the crankshaft, then re-pinned, before the 12 bolts that retained together with the block, torqued down to 410 lbs in 50 lbs increments. Just like each of the three heads that each had 12 head bolts torqued to 480 lbs ft at 40 lbs increments. The torque wrench was 5’ long old school clock type, with micrometer like settings.

The 6BT or QSB 5.9L 12valve NO EMISSIONS. In alot of 90's and 2000s(off road) trucks and equipment is my favorite engine. 22 years ago at the railyards when I started almost every Spotter Truck and piece of equipment had that engine. I have the same truck 05 and have just restored it and it has 158,000 original mile on it, I plan to keep it forever and drive it everyday and a lot more on weekends! I love this. I just had the engine and tranny completely rebuilt on my grandpa’s (and later my dad’s) 2001 Honda Civic. Completely redid the radiator, suspension, AC system, interior, paint job, wheels, tires. I like to think I earned it another 100k-200k miles.The things you do out of sentimentality.

Who knows if we got the whole story on that valve issue, were there broken pieces unaccounted for that fell down into the motor, who knows? In the end the customer must have wanted it rebuilt, either way my point was that the team Dave has really seems to strive to build the best engines possible. I bet the customer is more than happy with it.

I really related to your section at the end on checking your teams work. I manage engineers and am very detail oriented. Some of the people I've had under me just didn't pay attention to the small stuff, or check their work and it's really hard to address these issues without breaking their spirit. My first boss would micro-analyze my work and beat me into the ground over a small oversight. It made me a stronger engineer, but it was miserable. The anxiety on that tech's face really spoke volumes to me.

That is another great story, and again you have shown why you are an excellent shop and take that extra time to make sure things are as close to perfect as you can. When I can afford it I will probably check your shop out for a overhaul or a build of a diesel for my truck, but still a couple years from that yet.
