Liverpool 1980-1990 (part 1)

Part 1 of an audio tape titled "Liverpool The Golden Decade", telling the story of Liverpool's decade of triumphs and tragedies from 1980 to 1990. The tape features BBC radio commentaries and interviews, including Bob Paisley, Graeme Souness, Joe Fagan, Kenny Dalglish, John Smith and Bruce Grobbelaar. I have added video footage.
This part covers 1980 to 1986. Part 2 to follow soon.

I had a double cassette back in the day called (I think) From Shankly to Dalglish, which incorporated a lot of BBC Radio commentaries from Peter Jones and Bryon Butler that I was very sad to lose at some point. Some great snippets in here that remind me of that tape.

There's a similar goal that I saw from the Kop in 1985 v Arsenal that I keep hoping will turn up on one of Dave's videos. Neal cut in and played a give-and-go with Kenny on the edge of the box. Kenny turned inside at which point the Arsenal defence must have assumed he wasn't going to play Neal in, but he then played a reverse pass perfectly into Neal's feet for him to slide past the keeper.

@@martinmilam53this was 1984-85. The stand-off was the following season and there were still cameras at some games but no UK broadcast (hence the availability of the Goodison Derby - the best game I ever attended).

Pretty sure the national anthem was drowned out by YNWA in 86. The rejection of England definitely increased after Hillsborough though, particularly when the scale of the injustice and cover up became clear.

@@DaveWallerLFC That was the benefit of the National Anthem not being amplified through the stadium PA in those days - we could sing YNWA over it to make our point (that the establishment didn't care about us in the 80s, so why should we care about them?) Once they started amplifying it, you couldn't really do that, hence the modern approach of booing it, which is easier to hear.

To call the 80s the “golden decade” is is both insulting and ignorant. Everything they achieved on the pitch meant nothing, when compared to what happened at Hillsborough and especially at Heysel.

I didn't title the video, and to some extent I agree, but the logical conclusion is that nothing in football matters when compared to the deaths in tragedies throughout the history of the game. It seems like a narrow interpretation.

@@DaveWallerLFCI understand your point, but perhaps I needed to be clearer. I watched Liverpool dominate throughout the 70s and 80s, both at home and in Europe, with an incredible brand of football. This is undeniable. However, I was not making the point that there were more important things happening both at home and around the world, like Thatcherism or the fall of the Eastern Block - for the obvious reason that they are unrelated to Liverpool FC. But what happened in Brussels and Sheffield are landmark moments for the club, clearly not in a good way, and do more than taint this period of unparalleled success on the pitch, but render it meaningless. At least it does for me.

I understand your point but I still the logical conclusion would be for any club involved in a tragedy to stop playing football as anything else would be irrelevant. To say this only applies to Liverpool in the 80s feels selective. Surely you can remember what happened, and the ones who died, without everything else stopping.

My problem was with the title of the video, (and in your defence, you pointed out wasn’t titled by you). Life goes on, absolutely. It always does. The football played by Liverpool at that time doesn’t stop being incredible. But whatever you choose to label the 80s for Liverpool, “golden decade” is not right.

@jmc6720 thank you for taking a more measured tone in your comments than some others (who I have now deleted). I agree that the title clearly inappropriate in the context of Heysel and Hillsborough, and probably overall given these events. I have changed the video title, athough I have left the picture of the original tape sleeve. Hopefully that's a reasonable compromise.
