i saw Bowie interviewd on talk shows..He was the one of the most intelligent -sounding rock stars I've ever heard speak! (And a very good actor..only did about 5 movies, but all are highly praised by film critics)

This is the second song about Major Tom. If you watch the Black Star video You’ll see the fate of Major Tom. The official video for ashes to ashes is well worth a watch as well, for its time, it was the most expensive video produced!

I heard years ago from an announcer say that David Bowie could sing the names in a phone book and make them sound really good. I think he was right.

This is my fave Bowie song. It was so different at the time. And on a new thing called MTV. So haunting, but funky. Nothing like it. Call back to an earlier narrative. Him at his best.

Awesome! Live at Glastonbury 2000. Bowie put together such a great band for that tour. They sound really great. And the crowd looks so young! "Ashes To Ashes" was the lead single from David Bowie's 1980 album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps). I remember it because it was the first album he released after I became a teenager and later because of the video that went along with it. In the chitter-chatter with the crowd before he starts the song, Bowie brings up the time when he wore a clown hat which he does in the 1980 video for this song in which he is dressed as Pierrot the pantomime. You can find it listed as "Ashes To Ashes (Official Video)" at the David Bowie youtube channel. This clip is listed as "(Official Audio)" and for good reason because the band nails the song!

If you take the songs at face value, in space oddity major tom loses connection to ground control and accepts his fate of floating off into space (but doesnt die). David wrote ashes to ashes 10 years later as an update on major tom. Hes still alive but is taking drugs as what else is there to do stuck on your own in a spaceship. If you watch the video to the 10 min single Blackstar from his final album you will see what happened to major tom. Of course there are many more complex interpretations of what the songs really mean, drug addiction, fame etc. But that's what is great about Bowie, his songs can be interpreted in many different ways.

Yes there is, it is in some way a commentary on his substance abuse problems in the past.

Is Major Tom a Junkie? Maybe it's another metaphor.
