I was standing in the front row of that concert and still get goosepimpels. I was with thousand fans on the Westberliner side, while as many Eastberliners partied that weekend on the other side. And we all felt, that no wall would divide us forever. But it took another two years. The fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989 ended a fifty year East-West conflict

This song at that exact moment at that exact place is one of the most powerful symbols of union ever. Im from Berlin and my musik teacher used to be a teen in east Berlin. She told the class that she stood on the other side of the Wall where all this western Media was forbidden during this concert. The placement of the concert was no accident, easterners gathering as close to the wall as they could before the Stasi cleared the streets again (some joining the jive). But before that happened Bowie truly was singing for both sides of the wall and everyone was a hero just for one day. The lyrics basically double line for line as a huge Mittelfinger to the East/West division.

I was a young soldier serving in Berlin and managed to go to all 3 days - it was amazing. I remember that Mattheus Rust has recently landed in Red Square and we had tee shirts made to wear and we got interviewed on German TV. As the evenings drew in I remember many families lighting Chinese lanterns with messages attached and watching them float from West Berlin, over the wall and into East. It still brings a tear to my eye today to think back to then. I never imagined the wall would come down in my lifetime - but being there for those three days when the city was united by it's division, I knew that one day it would. I went back a few years after the wall had come down - and walked through the Brandenburg Gate for the first time and cried. Berlin in just the best city I've ever lived in, or visited - simple as that ❤

Aleks Martins the stage was right behind the Reichstag on the “Platz der Republik”, so I think the speakers didn’t faced East-Berlin. But the stage was so close to the wall they could hear the beats and the lyrics clearly.

and the likes of AOC and the Squad have totally forgotten what socialism brings...
@garypudup21093 жыл бұрын
@@worri8926 Really ? OK assume I know nothing...let's go with Marx, the author of communism, and Lenin, the Implementer of Soviet Socialism, they both believed that socialism was the first step on the path to communism. But what would they, or George Orwell, know about such things? I'm confident "Worri" knows more about these things than the people who established them. And let's not confuse progressives with socialists. AOC claims to be a socialist, or do you know better than her on that too? As Lenin said, "The goal of socialism is communism." www.brainyquote.com/quotes/vladimir_lenin_136421 Darn Lenin and Stalin and their silly weaponizing of socialism...
@garypudup21093 жыл бұрын
@@worri8926 Democratic socialism? Hahaha. Please name one successful socialist country? Past or present. PS, you may want to check your facts, neither Sweden nor NZ are socialist countries...oh wait...I get it now...you're one of those kooks who have confused the Nordic economic model with socialism. Sweden gave up on socialism decades ago and NZ has never been a socialist economy. You would do well to do your homework, then find the nitwit who told you such lies and take them to task for misleading you. Really do your own thinking. And you may want to to do some further research on the difference between a socialist state and a welfare state.
@garypudup21093 жыл бұрын
@@worri8926 I can see your confusion. AOC and her ilk have conflated Western liberal nations that have welfare programs with Socialism. Socialism has a definition, it is the central control of the means of production and the distribution of wealth. Neither Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the UK or any of the Nordic countries have such systems. And Communism is nothing more than Socialism without private property. Clearly “The Squad” identify as Socialists and so be it. That they don’t know the difference between Socialism and Western liberalism is on them and telling of their ignorance. She is not entitled to make up definitions to fit her arguments. If she wants to make up her meanings for known political and economic systems she has to be prepared to for people to call-out her lack of knowledge. In this respect she is only the flip side of the same coin Trump is on. They both make up their own facts. Sadly, she has dragged many good people down her rabbit hole who haven’t bothered to simply do a little homework much less actually major in political science. Let us have a conversation on the merits of a Canadian style USPHC ( which is not socialized medicine, nor even Federal, it is Provincial), or more funding for schools and economic safety nets, of which I favor; but let’s be clear they have nothing to do with Socialism. A state can be Socialist with none of these programs. Be careful falling in love with politicians, they will only break your heart when you discover they don’t know what their talking about, be it AOC or Trump.
