Lethal riff! I first heard this in the seventies and had to pull over to the side of the road ....the groove knocked me out.

I was a teenager in the late 70's and my brother and I would take the bus for over 1 hour to go to the BLUE MEANIE record store to buy David Bowie LIVE BOOTLEG lp's. (This one was originally a STEREO RADIO BROADCAST and was of excellent quality IMO. I prefer the BOOTLEG to the BOX SET because DAVID'S vocals were turned down in the latest release and some of them were deleted altogether). The reason we loved his LIVE CONCERTS was that many songs had extended guitar solos so he could change costumes. (by 1976 he DID NOT change costumes like before, but the solos had become a part of his act). The reason his band is so FUNKY came about by accident. In 1974 he recorded DAVID LIVE in Philadelphia and also went and did YOUNG AMERICANS during a break in the DIAMOND DOGS tour. His live band for the first leg of the tour was mostly WHITE musicians. The band mutinied and wanted to be paid more money because of the recording of the live L.P. Bowie responded by firing the rebels in the rhythm section and replacing them with BLACK artists from the YOUNG AMERICANS SESSIONS. The result was so magical he dubbed it "BLACK TIE / WHITE NOISE". BLACK RYTHM players to tie it to it's BLUES ROOTS with WHITE SOLOISTS playing over the top. With very few exceptions this POWERFUL combo became his main formula from then on. The 1976 tour was leaning towards HARD ROCK after DAVID saw LED ZEPPELIN at Madison Square gardens in 1975. The Guitar player (Stacey Heydon) was discovered in a Canadian bar. You can see the band perform STAY in 2 other videos. A shortened version on the DINAH SHORE SHOW: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6qykqOugLufgdk , and the full-length version: Beginning at 26:20 kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWOtZ6yVfrCFd9U , which was recorded because DAVID would video tape his tour rehearsals to give the band an idea of how they looked on stage. IGGY POP was DAVID'S (non performing) guest on this tour (Stacey went on to play with IGGY on the second half of his 1977-78 tour after DAVID, who played keyboards on the first leg, left the band). I did not see the '76 tour but gave blood to buy a ticket to see him kick off the ENO/BERLIN material in 1978 at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. Those were the days.

Great song. Todd glad you are enjoying the Bowie journey. I was fortunate to see him live 10 times over the years and every concert was different depending on his current personna at the time. If you haven't listened already I recommend the title track from Aladdin Sane as I know you love the piano. The solo is quite an experience!

Hi Todd! Great reaction!! I've always thought this song was superb and under rated . I used to blast this driving on my way to work. It definitely gets your body moving. I have never made a comment about the bass of any song but this one grabs my attention. Love on ya! ⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡

Bowie's song output 1970 - 1980 is truly masterful. The 1976 tour was one of his strongest. I also highly recommend the 1978 tour.

I bought the bootleg cassette of this gig (entitled 'The Thin White Duke') in a flea market in my hometown of Airdrie, Scotland in about '77 or '78 (I was 11 or 12yrs old and already a disciple). I knew that the gig had been recorded straight from the sound desk but the cassette quality was beyond awful. Even so, it was obvious that the band were on fire and Bowies voice was supernaturally powerful. In 1983 I bought the double vinyl bootleg from Listen Records in Glasgow and there was no improvement in sound, much to the disgust of my emptied piggy bank. In about '93 I bought the CD version and it was still crap. Two extra tracks on a late 90's reissue of STATIONTOSTATION teasingly confirmed the existence of the desk-quality version and finally we got the whole perfect quality gig with the box set reissue. It is as good as I had imagined it would be 45 years ago. Check out the version of 'Fame' from this gig. It's on steroids. *I still have the cassette, of course.

I caught this show in Detroit in 76' at the old Olympia (home of the Red Wings until they tore it down) and it was mind-blowing. This is one of the nuggets that many people don't realize is there as it was not a single. As someone suggested here. Aladdin Sane (song) is another one I would check out if you like piano. Mike Garson is a god.

I believe it was released as a single in the US.

Cool but the audio quality really isn't there - sounds like it's recorded in a biscuit tin; decent bootleg. I'd have lurved to see him in 1976, but caught the Stage tour in '78 and Let's Dance tour in 198?. (Stage tour being massively better - indoors). I'm a teeny bit older than you and in the right place to have lived Bowie - my elder sister bought Ziggy home, then A Lad Insane and weirdly a friend's elder brother had Hunky Dory. If you're my age and in the UK there's a pretty good chance you think he's our Elvis (but miles better). I caught up with Sis and bought everything 1968-1982 and it's pretty much all golden. I miss him a lot.

This ain't love, but it's alright. Earl Slick trying to bend his guitar and Newtonian physics. Enjoy! kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoOxgJ5_qJWqptk

This WAS originally a radio broadcast and one of his most popular bootlegs. It was later released officially and suffers from the more recent "loudness wars" and "brickwalling" and also the removal of quite a bit of audience reaction with the new production. The radio/ bootleg version also had some of the songs missing from this official release.
