I saw this video literally only once on VH1, I was around 9 I believe. But let me tell you, this thing stuck with me; the melody of the chorus followed me around all these years, as well as the imagery. The models, the latex dresses, the Byrne action figure, Mr Byrne with his white eyes and frosted tips... Talk about leaving an impression.

Watching his videos confirms me everytime that I did a wise expense in paying for watching him play live. My god, this man should be a considered for some higher human achievement or anything in the sort. We don't know how much we'll have this entity in this very plane.
@urbanmari4 жыл бұрын
I remember a show of his, too. He played solo on stage with an acoustic guitar probably🎙. As he went through a few songs, accompaniment joined from out of nowhere. And then there was a full band sound. And then the curtain dropped and he was backed by a huge band with big horn section. 🎷🎷🎺🎺 That was when i thought i wanted to marry David Byrne.

This song is a masterpiece. Video has a lot of 90's references, the rhythm is pure Latin, joking with the America term when people just mention one country and forget the whole continent and the cultural diversity. The lyrics is pure gold when comparing the US and the nationalism feeling with his Platonical relationship with a lap dancer. It's very funny the way he addresses the wicked internal issues that are covered by politics, also all the efforts that are made to look like the best model in the world. Immigration issues are addressed and the nationalism and love for the country even when the politics are made to explore people. Very nice work from David Byrne!
@LifesLaboratory2 жыл бұрын
The term "American" is the adjective used to describe someone from the US. Unless US citizens start calling themselves "Unitedstatesians", this will not change. This is absolutely fine because the terminology is well understood and globally accepted. As a Canadian, I am not an American and would be rather insulted if I was referred to as such. Feel free to call me a North American though, as this is the continent I live in. (There are two continents in the Americas, BTW). P.S. If you want an alternative poke at Americans listen to the original "American Woman" by the Canadian band "The Guess Who". The fact that this song was rerecorded and misrepresented as a patriotic song by actual Americans is hilarious. ;) Cheers!
@AlexOrozco-Social-Pariah Жыл бұрын
@@LifesLaboratory "globally accepted" only for english speakers, but most of us non native english speakers still use American as a demonym for the continent rather than the imperialistic appropriation of the demonym for economic and political purposes of the United States (manifest destiny and monroe doctrine joined the chat). Even the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language recommends not to use the demonym only to refer to people from the US because is a wrongful use.
@LifesLaboratory Жыл бұрын
@@AlexOrozco-Social-Pariah Nearly all native and non-native speakers of English use "American" to refer to the USA. Language changes and evolves and the common usage becomes the correct usage. As a biologist, I use the word "evolution" to discuss long term change, I suspect you do to. The fact that the original term was "transmutation" and the term "evolution" was originally used only to describe embryonic development (now known as ontogeny) is irrelevant. Words have established meanings that develop and evolve. Fighting this simply causes further confusion.
@AlexOrozco-Social-Pariah Жыл бұрын
@@LifesLaboratory that example is a fallacy; transmutation changed it's meaning to adhere to a scientific process of information to study nature with more nuance and clarification, rather than a socio-political construct to manipulate the perception of reality mainly for political and economic uses. While words change constantly in their usage it is a separate fact to deliberate manipulation; to pretend words evolving to be more specific by common usage and political manipulation of words are equal and therefore political manipulation as "innocuous" as the other is fallacious, aside from ignoring historical context that can indicate a xenophobic origin of its appropriation as a demonym. I don't know what sort of "confusions" might arise when the same people using american use Asians, for example, and can see the difference with vietnamese or chinese or hindi while still using the continental demonym. It's not like the concept is hard to grasp.
@LifesLaboratory Жыл бұрын
@@AlexOrozco-Social-Pariah More pedantic silliness. The term "American" has come to refer to citizens of the United States of America for two reasons: 1) "United Statesian" is a rather awkward term. 2) Americans are arrogant twats. ;) But the word has an established meaning, and there is no issue here. As a Canadian, I am an inhabitant of the Americas, but I am not an American. (Note also that we are not dealing with a singular continent as would be the case if we were discussing Asia or Europe). Because I am not an aboriginal (or member of the First Nations as it is referred to in Canada), I am also not an American by the original meaning of the term (you might want to look up the history of the term). Incidentally, evolution was an established term for embryonic development. It later replaced the existing term transmutation. No clarity was gained by this, it changed on a whim. This sort of thing happens frequently throughout history, and it certainly does piss off the snowflakes. Personally, I find the current willy-nilly substitution of ground and floor more irritating. There is no ground in your kitchen people! Cheers.
