Shame, if he had gotten a therapist or something to help overcome his childhood trauma, he would have been able to get rid of his weakness to water. I’ve always assumed the water is more of a psychosomatic effect than an real weakness like Krypontite is to Superman.
@lto8401
@lto8401 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheGary108 I always assumed that in this universe superpowers were gained by simply believing in them. David made himself belief that he is unbreakable, and so he was. So i guess it is safe to assume that any therapy that he would take would also try to persuade him out of believing into his superpower, therefore rendering him ordinary. As the guy in the video said; "the only limit is the one that his mind inflict of itslef" so the moment David starts to question his abilities is the moment they are not real. It's really an amazing concept, this is one of the few franchises that really made me think.

@DRAWN you can deduce it though. If he was as strong as he can be at all times, he would have been killing everyone he hit in his football days. Or at least giving them a cuncussion everytime. He also has never noticed it until he decided to try to test himself. The more he tests himself, the more he is able to accomplish. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that theory. Its been my head canon since day 1.

When you think about it David's superhuman physical/mental abilities seem to be specifically tailored for his protection, basically his body's ability is super self-preservation. Not only is he seemingly physically invunerable(his only real weakness being that he does need oxygen) but his body seems to warn him of "predators" when he makes contact with them. His physical and mental powers share a linking theme and i love that. Makes it even more dope that he uses his abilities to help others.
@lukekiely2450
@lukekiely2450 Жыл бұрын
I love that. It’s as if his powers are “self aware” and are their own person. And their mission is to keep David safe. He has unbreakable skin and bones, he’s insanely strong and his “sense” warn him of Dangerous people. And instead of staying away, he goes after them and stops them and saves people.

His powers seem adaptive. The 1st power of being unbreakable in response to an event that would have broken him. Immunity to being sick came after first being sick. His strength increases as he struggles with a lift. It seems that if you want him to have a power, make him have a need for it.

It's explained in the film that some people are just born special, that it's always happened and those people take on the roles of protectors or conquerors. It's not a coincidence that one of his abilities is that he can detect the wrongs others have done. I think the Beast is supposed to represent that the ability is latent in all humanity, you just have to be willful enough to tap into it. I don't think you're really meant to delve into them beyond that, it's not important whether natural mutations, radioactive spider bites or magic supreme beings pass them down. They're a constant throughout human history.

With the beast every human can become superhuman but due to our inhibitors itll stop us from wasting all that energy and itll tear our bodies inside out because of all that pressure which is why in our fight or flight response/adrenaline its temporary for a reason but as he says "the broken are the more evolved" meaning if someone suffered they can push themselves than how they were when they were weak

I think his "strain" during the bench press scene is a case of a mental block. His mind says "this is really heavy", and his body reacts. Because of his super strength, though, he's still able to do it. If he'd had the super strength all his life, and had actually discovered it early on (moving the fridge because his toy car slid underneath, for example), he wouldn't have the strain. Likewise, if he were to have his son load the bar up, then lie about it only being 70 lbs or somewhat, he'd be able to lift it easily.

I believe that super straingh is and would be a side effect of super regeneration. As you lift something have it rips your mecule tissue as it grows back you get stronger and adapt to the weight basically...so if you have super regeneration your mecule would heal and adapt to the whieght at the rate of the rip there for your straingh could be almost boundless. So when he lifts the weight the 1st time it was probably his max which is why he stained as much but as he lifted it and the tissue ripped it instantly healed and adapted. And by the time he put it down and added more weight he was completely recovered and his max had increased allowing him to lift the next weight and so on and so on. Until he ran out of weight to lift

Good idea, but the type of muscular gains you're referencing result in some strength but mostly in hypertrophy (increase in muscle size). So if this were true he's visibly increase in size as he lifted and by now would look like a, relatively, hairless buffalo
@jiggyfly7165
@jiggyfly7165 5 жыл бұрын
Micah Ross I've thought of that to, and that would be true for a normal person but someone with super regeneration wouldn't be normal and there is no case of it to go off of plus not all comic book powers can be explained with real life physics. I am still convenced that it would be a side effect of super regeneration but as to why they don't get super huge in the process would have to be a result of unique muscle structure just like how the flash burns all those colleries and doesn't suffer any side effects except to a huge apitite or how being bit by a radioactive spider made Peter Parker ripped over night

Eeeexcept that his body is unbreakable. Which would include his muscle fibers. I think THAT in itself is the key to his strength. It sounds silly, but let's face it, the whole thing is silly. People get tired and weak when lifting weights and working out BECAUSE their muscles breakdown and need to heal. If your muscles don't break, you theoretically wouldn't tire and wouldn't weaken. His strength may just be due to his mental self-control and focus. He's able to push through his limitations.
@jiggyfly7165
@jiggyfly7165 5 жыл бұрын
Disco_Latitude if that was true he wouldn't get tired but he also wouldn't get stronger plus we don't know what makes him indestructible super regeneration could be a factor in it just like the hulk is vertualy indestructible his skin is so tough that normal bullets and weapons bounce off of him but if there is something strong enough to get past his tough skin he also has super regeneration and can heal from almost any attack in seconds. The same is true for superman no normal weapon can pierce his skin but if you watch when ever there is kryptonite or something magical around that can damage him as soon as he gets away from in his wounds heal instantaneously. And what's one other thing they both have in comman? You got it super strength...

I think up until this point M. Night has left it up to the viewer to put the pieces together as far as the origin of his powers go. I think, like Kevin, it is in fact a mind over matter sort of thing. In Split there's a lot of talk about the power of the human mind and unlocking the full potential of the brain. Kevin does this through suffering and as a result gains extraordinary abilities. I think David was born this way...with his full potential already unlocked. A few people only experience a glimpse into their true potential. A mother lifting a car to save her children...a person falling thousands of feet and walking away unscathed...clairvoyance and premonitions...monks performing incredible feats by hyper focusing and using the power of their minds. David and Kevin are what humanity could be if we unlocked the full potential of our minds. They are the peak of human evolution. Split gave a more grounded explanation about Kevin's powers. It explored the scientific aspect of things. Unbreakable focused more in the grand scheme of things...heroes that walk among us and the eternal struggle between good and evil. I think Glass will delve more into both sides and bring everything together in a way that is understandable to all audiences.
@Zeltan88

As explained in Split how beings get super powers it is possible that David gained those powers when the kids drained him in the pool. It may have been such a shocking moment in his life, that his body developed this high endurance.

It's most like based on the same thing they hint towards in unbreakable. What the human mind can make the body due in times of stress and fight or flight situations, and Dunn's ability to sort of use that at will only hindered by his "weakness " and phobia which is water. Expanding on that would be someone's mind that's able to convince itself it's multiple people, and what would happen if it successfully convinced itself it was super human. Look up the kind of stuff monks can do and imagine someone who bipassed twenty years of mediation and practice through shear crazy.

When I look at the movies that have come out I would say the key to ALL the super powers (Unbreakable, Glass, Horde) is the ability to push past pain. Dunn pushes past the pain of any wait he is lifting, Glass increases his will and intellect pushing past the pain of his body, and the Beast pushes past the trauma of his childhood. Oddly, this would make the rant of the Beast about those who have been 'touched' or who are 'perfect' make sense in the context of this fictional world.

Most Comic book hero's or villains have had traumas in their lives. David Dunn's son hasn't had any traumas in his life yet so if he has powers he may not have them active yet. Wolverine, killing his father and being sick (Wolverine Origin) Magneto having his family ripped from him (1999 Xmen) so on and so forth.

Okay I don't think you went into the pneumonia thing. One of the possible symptoms of pneumonia is actually fluid in the lungs, so it's a very creative way of extending his one weakness. Now this begs the questions: Does David get stronger when he's dehydrated? Would he be weaker during rain? To what extent does the water affect him?

Hey man, great video! I have a quick theory for you on Elijah Price lineage etc. David Dunn has a double name and I believe Mr Glass does too. I bet at some point in film we realize who Elijah's dad was and he had some sort of power too. His last name will start with an E Allowing for a EE name similar to DD for David Dunnam.

I've just watched it (idk how I haven't before) and there's something I don't get: how did he never notice he was super strong, or more importantly, how did he never notice he had psychic powers? He never touched random people to have glimpses of what those people had done? Like ever? Never shook hands? Never bumped into people? To the point of finding that weird and then eventually looking for super powers theories? Or did the psychic aspect was triggered after the train accident?

if you are a skilled individual, but you never talked to anyone, or were never mentored, you were never shown that what you do is special when compared with others, a lot of great people in the world are pushed, trained, encouraged by someone to be great, not many people see their true selves without help.

First off, sorry this comment/essay is so long. Hopefully, you find it interesting. If I were to take a guess to explain his super strength, I would link it to his durability/regenerative abilities/more efficient nervous system. The average untrained person can only use about 30 percent of their muscle fibres at any given time. An elite level athlete can on average use about 40 percent. This is controlled by the nervous system which activates the muscle fibres. Through intense training overtime, the nervous system adapts to certain loads and movements and allows for the activation and recruitment of more muscle fibres to carry out the task. This is why some people can get much stronger without putting on much overall muscle size. However, when adrenaline is pumped into your body, you can use up to 100 percent of your muscle fibres. This can make you strong enough momentarily to punch straight through a wall or lift a car. On the other hand, some people are born with the natural ability to activate more muscles fibres than the average person. I'm sure you may have heard of that small guy who can bend frying pans. Well, he can activate way more muscle fibres than the average person, making him super strong. Whenever you see someone get an electric shock and they fly across the room, its not some explosion that does that. In fact, it's the electricty causing all of their muscles to instantly contract at the same time which generates a huge amount of force. The reason we can't use 100 percent of our muscle fibres all the time is because of the risk of injury it presents to our ligaments and tendons, which would get torn apart with too much strain. On top of that, ligaments and tendons recover and adapt from stress much more slowly than muscles do. But what if you ligaments and tendons were either UNBREAKABLE (hehe) or were able to recover and adapt incredibly quickly from stress. It would mean that if you could use all of your muscle fibres at once (either from genetic make-up or adrenaline) without any real risk (but perhaps with pain and discomfort until the ligaments and tendons healed). Now, while David Dunn is incredibly strong for his size, what he does bench is actually far from superhuman or even world records. An elite level powerlifter or strongman would have absolutely no problem benching 500+ pounds. So it's possible that this strength actually comes from an increased activation of his average-sized muscle fibres, that just doesn't put the same level of stress on his body that it would with anyone else. This could be the result of adrenaline (as when he attempts to bench, he gets worked up and kinda scared each time which would have probably released adrenaline) and/or the natural ability to activate all or most of his muscle fibres through efficiency of his nervous system. This ability could be enhanced by adrenaline which could give the illusion of sheer willpower making him stronger. This efficiency of his nervous system could be the cause of his incredible immune system also.

I think sarah Paulson character has powers too, she got her powers thought she was crazy but able to use her position to study others (like how glass had to cause accidents to prove the truth) she investigated them truly hoping they have power as it would confirm she did too, keys are her 2 quotes " I want to believe in real life super heros" but the key line is my proof, she says at beginning Of trailer powers are a delusion, yet in newest trailer is seen saying "we are not meant to have this kind of power " why not "u" or "people" or "humans " the word we is key and clearly she believes in David's strength at least due to his chains in chair scene and the bank vault like door to his room u see him break down I predict she reveals herself to save David (the scene where she reached to him in water.

Here is an interesting thought. If all of David's powers derive from his unbreakable nature (ie his strength comes from his Muscle Fibers also being unbreakable) then it would be very possible for him to be highly resistant to small arms weapons. Specifically that his muscle fibers and skin might act exactly like body armor.

Much like when a family member is trapped under a car or similarly heavy object it is not until that moment that a person would ever seriously consider trying to move something so heavy but when you feel that it needs to be moved you are miraculously capable of moving it, I feel like David's powers are a play on our own hidden strength as humans. Most people believe themselves to be ordinary until something happens that requires them to be extraordinary, amazing survival stories where people who have suffered massive physical trauma but are somehow still capable of dragging themselves to safety are proof that we are more than our fleshly bodies, we are mind and soul as well.

Whats strange is, from the movie split, im starting to think that david, as well as mr glass, and the beast. They dont have powers. I notice they all have traumas, traumas that hinder the way they perceive themselves. David dunn for instance, he was a successful football player. To be good at football, it may need a belief that you are indestructible in order to take the punishment. David might secretly believe he is all those things very strongly. His one weakness, water, it has to be psychological. Psychological because it takes away his belief that he is strong, unbreakable, overseer. Water is the only thing that convinces him he is weak, its a trauma. But with no water present, i think david dunn is as strong, durable, as he needs to be because he believes so. Its a possibility

Since the human body is composed of around 70% water it's not likely that he would have a general vulnerability to water otherwise he would have a problem when it rains or he's taking a bath or shower. As mentioned in the movie when he fell into the pool he kept swallowing water. So I would say his vulnerability to water is that he lacks the mammalian instinct to stop breathing when submerged. Combine that with hydrophobia which would induce hyperventilation combined with a higher than normal bone density and you've got David Dunn's vulnerability to water.

I think PART of the reason he's so strong is because his muscle fibers don't break. As far as drowning, to me, that just seems like less of a "weakness" and more of logical reality. Doesn't matter how strong your body is you're still gonna die if you can't breathe.

David Dunn / Kevin Wendell Crumb and his Mother (Glass trilogy) I am not sure if this has been brought up before but I wonder if David inadvertently met a younger Kevin and his mother in Unbreakable. There was a scene outside the stadium where we see a mother hurriedly walking with her son (him struggling to match her pace) in hand. She briefly made physical contact with David who was walking in an opposing direction to them. A moment later we (the viewers) are permitted to hear something that only David hears in his mind. The terrified scream of a young child who we assume was this young boy. It caused David to pause his walking and turnaround to look back at the mother and her child with concern as the distance between them increased. M Night did not treat us with a flashback moment to reveal the context of the child’s scream but the scene adequately conveyed that this must have been a child abuser and her son that David came into contact with. After a few rewatches (years back) I came to the conclusion this was the first time David was becoming subtlety aware of one of his abilities which might explain why there was no flashback scene in this instance. Notice the difference with M Night’s drug dealer cameo later. Here we are given a flashback scene to show us what M Night’s character was up to giving David probable cause to engage him. After watching Glass and M Night giving us the revelation that Kevin’s father was also a victim of the Eastrail disaster, I remembered the mother and son scene from Unbreakable and wondered could it have been that David met Kevin and his mother (without realising it) way back then?
