The career of David Duval is often overlooked due to injury problems that took a heavy toll. This is a look at my favorite player and a dominating figure in the late 90s of golf.

One of the all time greats. Not only did he have the silkiest swing, but I just love the way he got around the golf course. Great video guys

When I was young and Tiger was at his prime, David Duval was one of my favourite golfers, I even copied his swing and tried to look cool like he did 😅

Loved watching Duval play. Amazing balance, pure ball striker, and superb touch around the green. In his prime, he was the only guy you really believed could give Tiger a run week after week. I miss his stoic style of play.

Absolutely love watching this guy play it was hard to believe it at the time when he took the world #1 from Tiger but he was that good at that time in his career and this was in Tigers prime.

After the Open his injuries sidelined what could have been a dominating career and Tiger’s biggest threat. His swing was free flowing and seemingly effortless. Always liked watching him play.

He was an excellent player! Very underrated for sure, perhaps because he was a very low key personality, and he was overshadowed by the end of the Shark Greg Norman era, and beginning of the Tiger dominance era. But I don’t believe anyone won more than Duval did from late 1997-early1999. 11 times over a 2.5 year period! He was a pretty dominant number one in that time.

No temper tantrums or excuses just got on with it and a genuinely nice unpretentious guy , could have won at St Andrews in 2000 must have had 9 putts in the final round that touched the hole and stayed out, but still a fantastic golfer with grasp of reality and what’s important in life , thanks David .

Not sure why this guy isn't in the golf HOF. 13 tour wins, 1 major, one Players. During that period from 97 to 2001 it seemed like he was winning every single month. The rotation through the ball is unmatched. Very underrated player.

I grew up in Ortega in Jacksonville and knew him in high school. I remember watching him tee off on #10 at Timuquana CC and he just ripped one down the left side of the fairway to a place I STILL haven't been. He is 4 years older than me. 9th grade(year after he graduated and went to Ga Tech) I had the golf coach for study hall. Coach Mike Koch... we were talking about DD and we asked him if he thought he'd play PGA Tour one day.... Coach said Oh yeah. He's going to play and he's going to win a lot. Just watch..... I'll never forget that.

His vertigo and back problems truly ended a definite HOF career had he stayed healthy. We all hear about the one hit wonders who hit the pinnacle and disappear, but Duval was better than Tiger at one point in 1998. I truly believe if David Duval had even stayed reasonably healthy without his injuries, he’d have 20+ wins and 3 majors. I mean he would catch FIRE when he was playing well. Not a Hall Of Fame career, but he was a Hall Of Famer 1997-2001

Started playing when he was #1. Modeled my swing after his. To this day I still swing with a strong grip, use an “under release” and turn my head through impact to a low finish. Can’t do it any other way but the Duval way. So underrated.

He's a case study as to how fickle the game of golf can be. To go from being the best in the world to literally falling off the planet and not being able to compete is truly incredible. I understand he had some injuries but those healed at a certain point and he was never the same again. Anthony Kim is another one. Both of these guys could have been top 10-15 in the world for 12-15 years easily had they kept their games.

I am an ardent TW fan and he's the reason why am I'm such a golf nut...with all his powerful, aggressive swing, the records broke he broke and set,the solid game he had to go along with the victories...I still choose to model my golf swing to that of DAVID DUVAL's,his swing is one of the finest I've seen,he was and still is my player of choice outside of TW. I firmly believe that had it not been of those unfortunate injuries, this golfing soul would've gone very far in this game, would have given TW nightmares too. DUVAL was very, very good and I still respect him even today. ✌🏿🫶🏿🏌🏿

At one time the best player on Tour. Tiger was always watching where he stood in each tournament. The most balanced swing I every seen. Mechanically his swing took out the chances for error. But Duval’s personality was very cold and he never interacted with fans at tournaments. Would deny fans any access to him.

I used to really enjoy watching him in his prime! When he found incredible success, as happens a lot in all sports, he changed things… he lost weight, lengthened his swing, and said bye bye.. sad. He could have been the greatest ever with the action he had back then! I don’t know if he made the changes himself, or maybe someone close to him put the idea in his head..??

For a few years, this guy was the man. And that was amongst a very strong field that included Tiger Woods in his prime. I was so pleased that he won the Open just before his back problems became too much, and he went into decline. You could see how the back thing came about when you see his really full, and very wide follow through. Great to watch though. You'll notice that today's top players look like they're hitting knockdown shots with their irons. Very compact finish. Fleetwood is the perfect example of this.

I was a kid when Duvall was on top of the golf world. My best friend’s dad at the time told me one day that somebody he knew saw Duvall at an airport just before a major tournament (Master’s maybe) and asked for an autograph. Supposedly, Duvall blew him off. So the guy told Duvall that he cursed him for the rest of his golfing career. Not long after, Duvall basically fell off the face of the earth. Lol

Most who have not suffered severe back issues don't understand how difficult that can be to recover from and he also suffered from vertigo which balance is essential in a great golf swing. I believe these issues derailed him, he played golf since he was a young child with his dad being a pro.

He said that after he won the Open (and finally got a major), he basically felt that he'd reached the pinnacle. He suddenly had a realization that it was not going to get any better than this, and didn't have the same passion for years for the game. He'd worked so hard to get there, and once he was there, the relief and happiness turned to a sense of "What now? What was left to prove?" Certainly the injury struggles became easier to accept, no longer was it paramount to work his ass off to get through it or maintain his game at the highest level. Duval lost his edge, his drive. I do wonder... would the same thing have happened if he had won the US Open or the PGA, or even the Masters. The Open Championship has that little bit extra, being played on such old courses and being a much older tournament. Not to mention being called the Champion Golfer of the Year by the oldest governing body in the sport. It might have hit different than any other major for him, but maybe it wouldn't have mattered which he won?

Sprained lumbar vertebra Injuries to his neck, back, and wrist plagued Duval and in 2003 he began to battle vertigo. The back first acted up in early 2000 when he threw it out due to a sprained lumbar vertebra. His swing changed in order to cater to the injury, but he developed a 2-way miss.
