David had it all - he could act, sing and was incredibly photogenic. His performance as Jim MacLaine in ‘That’ll Be The Day’ and ’Stardust’ is so convincing. The cast of those films had lived that life and brought a real authenticity to it. It’s great to see that David’s still going. His Christmas song ‘A Winter’s Tale’ brings back such happy childhood memories for me 🙏

@Jack Warner They’re such great films. One of the things that sets them apart is that they’re not afraid to portray the main character in a negative light. Jim MacLaine isn’t a nice person. He betrays his best friend (played by Robert Lindsay) by sleeping with his girlfriend on the eve of his marriage, he abandons his lovely wife and baby, breaks his mother’s heart, destroys the one decent relationship he has with the long-standing girlfriend and on and on. If you’ve ever read any rock star biographies you’ll know this picture is far truer to what they tend to really be like then any flattery promotional film…

If someone asked for one word to describe David Essex it would be EYES. So lovely to see he has aged well, looks a handsome older man,not stupid like so many still trying to look younger with long hair and teenage clothes. He looks dignified.

I’m 51 yrs old now but when I was 16 yrs old I met David Essex, when he was visiting my sister and her husband at their house. My brother in law was a sound record engineer and was helping David Essex on a project. David Essex came round in his Porsche Carrara and when I was a youngster I was obsessed with sports cars, and David Essex kindly let me take a ride in his Porsche, and when we came back I couldn’t help bragging about it all the time to my friends when I went back to school.

@@67psych I remember I was about 16 when I heard Rock On and saw the guy. Like you, I'm gay... and as a 16 year old, I was entranced. I had more "dirty thoughts" about him than I care to admit even now. And that song was great background music for doing what kids back then would NEVER admit to doing alone, LOL. I can't believe that he's an old man now. By the way, I prefer the long hair on young guys - at least some of them. There was something so cool and rebellious about it.

Great job on this compilation Mark, for Brits of a certain age we basically grew up with him and he was always the quiet, unassuming good looking fella who everyone loved. His crowing glory for me was in the single Hold Me Close when he after many choruses of "every cloud's got a silver lining" in the last refrain he finally grammatically corrects it to "has" a silver lining. Why is that important? My mum absolutely adored him and this little lyrical joke was the icing on the cake for her. Simpler times 🙂 edit: Of course the chant "I don't fink so" in Gonna Make you a Star made the 11 year old me chuckle.

well, that was very good. I've never been a big David Essex fan, I did get Rock On when it first came out and I liked A Winter's Tale, but otherwise his work passed me by. I thought I would watch a bit of this but ended up seeing the entire thing and really enjoyed it. It gave me a new appreciation for Essex's work and I'm going back to find some of the old stuff to watch. Thanks.

I must say, he was always one of my favourite singers, I have a few of his songs and I think that he had a terrific emotional edge to his voice, "Goodbye First Love" still one of my favourite songs along with "Ships that Pass in the Night"

When i was seventeen i worked as a receptionist in a film company in London St James Street . The boss gave his secretary some tickets to the film premier That'll be the day .She gave one to me and now I wish i had taken my autograph book along .I wasnt very worldly in those days so would not have appreciated the film then. It was a few years later that i realised what a talent he was and still is.

Gosh I loved David Essex. I remember going to see him in thee Glasgow Apollo and hold me close went to no 1 that day. Talk about atmosphere. The whole concert hall was rocking. The Apollo was a great venue and I saw so many amazing artists but I always remember that night with David Essex. I saw him again about 12 or so years ago and he was every bit as good then as he’s been the previous 3 times I’d seen him. This time my husband was with me and he was amazed at how good David was.
