Crazy. During my first year wildland fire fighting, I read his book and used it for motivation. Am learning today that he not only did it but carries a high respect for it. I did it for the same reasons. I said no to doing it this year. Got a call asking again if I was sure. I said fuck it. Let's go. Went to KZbin to look up some fire videos to get moody about it. Found this. It all makes sense. Wow. Even though I'll be the oldest on the fire line...I ain't done either. Not yet. Not today. Update: I got the fire bug. 3 seasons later and 3 AAS degrees later I got a perm gig. I just can't leave the line and don't think I ever will.

Anyone who's ever been through a grueling training session or regiment, is all too familiar with the unyielding fatigue, and/or lactic acid burn, side stitch, etc...that only gets worse, the longer you continue. Everything inside you is SCREAMING for you to stop, or slow down! And anyone who has found a way to ignore that torrent of discomfort, and push through that sh!t, is also familiar with the glory and pride of having conquered their mind, on a certain scale. Yet, maybe less than 1% of the world's population has completely taken the reins of their own minds, to the point where their brain goes from screaming "STOP, " to saying "This motherf*cker is not gonna stop, I HAVE to find more." Goggins is one of them. And whoever has experienced that pain and discomfort first-hand, can appreciate what he's done even more, because you can only imagine the level of raw grit that you would need to take it to the level that he has. Of course he advises against training through injuries like he did, but what sort of animal can push himself through kidney failure, and the impact of 260 pounds repeatedly slamming down on fractured foot bones? This is the type of sh!t that courses through the veins of SEALs, Deltas, Raiders, etc... even elite athletes. He learned how incredibly durable, and resilient the human body is, by pushing himself to the brink of destruction, then healing stronger than before. He laid it out there for everyone to see, there's dormant monster inside us all, but it takes supreme control over our own minds to wake it.

I wonder if he would take learning maths and physics as a challenge. Its not anything physically (pun not intended) challenging, but its a big challenge for your brain and its really hard. There isn't a lot of suffering in that, but you have to be bloody determined to do it because you will constantly fail when you deal with problems that you don't know how to solve and problems that you don't know how to conceptualize properly which is the hardest thing to do in maths and physics.

It takes mental discipline though.

I totally agree with you, but you can say that for any kind of challenge or hardship. I was pointing out that its not hard in a sense that physical training is hard and I was wondering if he would take it as a challenge because of that. A friend of mine had just gotten out of the service. He was a recon marine. He applied for the local fire department. There was a physical test where he was dragging a dummy up some stairs. He was attacking it hard as he does everything. One of the test supervisors told him to slow down and pace himself, at that point he decided that was not the place he wanted to be. A few months later he went back to the navy and became a navy seal.

Tried out for Delta Force twice? Love too know what went wrong as he seems to have the right mentality and physical ability to get in. I know there’s more to getting in a Tier 1 but would be interesting to hear why it didn’t work out.

Jason 01 his book explains it, I won’t spoil it for you but you are right in saying he had what it took physically.
