Also money, imagine you find the voice actor you want for a specific role, but you can not afford to also get your old voice actor and also MGS V was an unfinished great game... so who knows what would have or could have happened and in the Japanese culture there is a lot more shade thrown on things...

So, why the hell would Kojima be ungrateful for the massive success the franchise has achieved thanks to David? Did Snake for 15 years, had to drop half of his pay check to get some of the old cast back re-dub MGS Twin Snakes, promoted the MGS games,had to re-audition to get the role, been replaced without a phone call and had to pay for one of the Konami staff for lunch. Seeing this possible Kojima's "work standards" can be as bad as Konami's as we all know Konami has a bad rep after MGSV. IF they can fire Hayter without a word, they fired Kojima just like that, it's really shitty business when it's Konami, if you see the MGS4 special edition, Kojima is really bossy to the staff, but delivers a good product, but if Konami treats people like shit it's really a bad business how they run and very unprofessional. Regardless of what he has done in the past for the series, he should never feel entitled. Kojima is the boss and he has a vision for what he does. Minima made him famous and Hayter became cocky. He thaught no one but him could be Snake and so he started to phone it in. You could tell in 4 it was not a good performance. Voice actors should audition each time, other wise you get shit like in FF, or Crysis where next performances are shit. +kenji harima exactly my thoughts, Kojima is a great game designer but I remember in one part of the documentary some developer was almost begging Kojima not to force his team to add some extra feature or dialogue because the number of bugs was becoming unmanageable and he didn't want to risk breaking other things. I'm with David here, and I don't blame him for not wanting to work with Kojima again. People are like "Kojima is the innocent party", but keep in mind, he's done a lot of bad stuff as well, from a business perspective. David did do a lot of work for the series, but they should have told him in a better way and told him he wouldn't be needed. People here can say that Big Boss is a different character, and while that's true, it doesn't excuse the fact they didn't tell him his voice wouldn't be needed in MGS5. Maybe that's on Kojima, maybe it's not, but it's still terrible they didn't at least inform him before going ahead with casting another voice. For a better example, it would be like you finding out your girlfriend/boyfriend has another partner but didn't bother telling you it was over. It's the same idea here.

Back in 2013, everyone was defending Hayter over how poorly he was treated. Now, in 2016, many are complaining that he's just crying, and that Sutherland's performance is much better (even though Venom had like 3 minutes of dialogue). Also, Hayter isn't crying about anything. He's just giving an answer to an interview question. Edit: The whole situation shows how agressively apologetic fanboys are. I can see both sides of the issue. I think David has every right to be upset that he was cast aside so unceremoniously and I can see Kojima's side being that he had a certain vision for the character that required a more mature and subdued performance. I do think Kojima could have at least thrown David a bone and given him a little cameo in the post-credits dialogue, like him (as Solid Snake) receiving his first orders from Big Boss in Metal Gear or something along those lines. It would have at least demonstrated a little respect and acknowledgment for David's role in helping make Snake a video game icon. Not to mention it probably would have made many longtime fans happy.

It's kinda funny how everyone in the comments is blasting at David Hayter for whining or whatever, saying how he should have been replaced for Naked Snake and Old Snake. Meanwhile nobody's looking at the fact that Snake's Japanese voice actor Akio Otsuka has been playing the role of nearly every Snake, (Solid, Naked, Solidus, and Venom) and nobody mentions that. Don't forget most of you people weren't to happy about Kiefer playing the role back when he was announced. Pretty much everyone bat's an eye at Kojima, because apparently he's above criticism. I gotta say it's disrespectful what he did to David. I'd only want him back if he voiced Solid Snake, but without the ridiculous gravel. MGS5 brought the MG franchise into a realm of much more believability, which is good. The character models and voices made it feel as if they were real people, and Hayter's "performance" would certainly ruin that. I mean can you imagine him in a performance capture environment? Or even just in a facial mocap studio, doing his voice? He makes all kinds of funny faces because he's too arrogant to step down from his gravelly voice and just use his normal voice, with a very subtle gravely tone to it. Can you imagine him in scenes like the ashes scene from MGSV? I certainly can't.

Honestly, what's really annoying is the people complaining about David's complaining. They're blowing it way out of proportion, making it so much more of a bigger deal than what it is, and even making it a meme, making it EVEN more annoying. As an outside MGS player who hasn't played one since the Playstation days, I remember picking up Sons of Liberty and thinking, "Jeez, Snake's the voice actor is pretty bad". Everyone in the room agreed. it was amateurish. Hayder's voice acting might have held up 10 years ago, but for the Big Cinematic experience that was MGS:5 , Hayder would've devalued it.

MGSV was a good game, but it was missing to much of that Metal Gear feel. Not only was the new Snake voice different, but there was also no fancy Ocelot moments. I could understand in MGS4 because it was Liquid Ocelot, but in MGSV it was the original Ocelot. The gun range scene would have been the perfect time to do such a thing, even if it was only in that 1 scene we got anything from him.

It's another piece of evidence that Kojima is not the Saint he's always made out to be, although I still have a tonne of respect for his creativity. I've always maintained that if he hadn't spent so much time and money for V making unnecessary merchandise tie ins (that were far too expensive for most fans to afford - and no one cares if the bike in 1 small part of a cutscene is a Triumph unless we can use it), and twice as many trailers as was necessary, Kojima could have completed the V that fans deserved. Not to mention developing PT/Hills at the same time and trying to align himself so deeply to Holywood - meeting actors and directors constantly. Kojima doesn't even realise that Holywood is trash now, it's the golden age of TV again. What a lot of people have to understand, is that Metal Gear Solid was more then just a job for David Hayter, it was his passion it's what he loved. David even said that it wasn't about the money when voicing Snake, he did it because that was his Character, from playing the Character since 1998, he felt connected to Snake after all these years playing Solid Snake and Old Snake. Why should Kojima be condemned for making a decision that could improve the game he is making (not saying there was a better voice actor for snake they obviously still went with David for a reason for 3,4 and peacewalker). It makes more sense to have a different voice actor for big boss and you could argue an older voice actor would be better for old snake. The person who should be condemned is the person who didn't tell David that they were going a different direction with the game and at least say thank you for your work. It's always sad whenever I hear controversy around a game I like, especially when it comes to the Metal Gear Solid series. But it's important to keep in mind that this should not change my initial experience the game. Kojima brought the stealth genre to great heights while Hayter's voice gave Snake a larger than life personality. Even if they weren't on the best of terms they both made MGS very memorable. I only wished the Phantom Pain was handled much better than it was.

Honestly I have to agree with David Hayter about Kojima acting like a rockstar. I mean he's a very good game designer and it shows in Snatcher, Policenauts and Metal Gear games but his ego is getting way over his head lately. I think David Hayter had every right to be sulky about Hideo's decision replacing David Hayter and he could have handled it professionally instead of canning him without any notice. I respect Hayter as an established screenwriter and producer, I'm fond of his iconic voice acting in Metal Gear games but it shows that he isn't a voice actor and Kiefer is more of a professional but he at least deserves a credit for the success of MGS in terms of promotion for the past 18 years. (Spoilers beware!) I didn't mind that he got recasted considering the fact (SPOILERS FOR MGS5 BEWARE), that all along we weren't playing as snake. So it makes sense that they decided to go with kiefer sutherland. I find that he did an amazing job despite the fact that he got very little lines. However, I was very disappointed that at the end when Big Boss revealed himself they didn't use David Hayers Voice. I was really hoping this would have been the case and it would have fit perfectly and make sense. It was a missed opportunity and a great surprise to all fans.

The part where David talks about 60 hours of humiliation, I agree with him there because I would have like to see him play a game that is not fully completed. What David should be happy is that he's not involve with the project and being tackled with question like, "David, why is the game not completed? David what's going with Konami and Kojima or When will they give us the final episode?"

It pisses me off seeing so much hate towards Hayter. Most of these Kojima nuthuggers are dumb kids that just don't get it. MGS1 on PSX would not have had the same impact that it did without Hayter's characterization of Snake. He brought that badass-ness that helped make you feel like you were playing an action movie. The voice acting and localization was key to the success of a game like Metal Gear Solid, and is a huge reason why it was so special, memorable, and commercially viable enough to spawn a million sequels. - Kojima doesn't speak English. He never casted any of the US voice actors until he unceremoniously had Hayter booted without telling him about it. - Hayter voiced the character for over a decade, and gave up half his pay to bring all the original actors back for their supporting roles in the Twin Snakes remake, because he obviously cared about it more than Konami or Kojima did. They could have at least told him.

They both seem like the kind of person to want attention and to be an icon. Them not caring for each other makes sense. One one hand, MGS wouldn't be a thing without Kojima. On the other hand, it wouldn't be the SAME thing without David's voice. David's work will be in my memories as long as I live. And I look forward to what Kojima brings next.

Honestly Big Boss should’ve had a different voice actor in the beginning to avoid problems like this. David Hayter should always be Solid Snake but Big Boss should’ve had a different voice actor.

It made them step out of the shadow the Solid Snake and be iconic on their own right...even near the end of MGS4 they cast Richard doyle as big boss. I LOVED Hayter’s voice as a kid. To me He IS SOLID SNAKE but because of that, I was turned off by MGS 3 and Peace Walker cause it felt confusing af since they used his iconic voice to fill the role of another iconic character which was both weird and made it feel cheap. Considering how they were prequels, I did not really care much at that point. But I felt that the Voice director should have done more with Sutherland...I mean his “Kept you waiting, huh?” Was so dry as if he was simply dictating from a script.

Wow, it's so interesting to see people claiming Hayter is whining and bitching about this? I'd say he's being very fair, and maintaining his professional decorum here.There are in fact at least two sides to every story, and people have many facets to their character. Kojima very well may have had a semblance of jealousy (although that's perhaps too strong a word) towards Hayter, the man, although he is an absolute legend, clearly has some God complex and strives for the spotlight. He has even credited his voice as the 'voice of God' in some of the Metal Gears. Hayter has dedicated a ton to this role over the series, even doing a job that he wasn't wanted for, and I would say that a large proportion of that reason is for the fans. Think of the backlash Kojima and Konami had for switching him over in MGSV was phenomenal, Hayter at least postponed that many years ago. Are we also forgetting that he gave up half of his salary on The Twin Snakes so the team could hire nearly all of the previous voice actors for the game? I mean, who else would do that? Not many.I still highly respect Kojima, but I don't think he's all rainbows and gumdrop smiles. And I think out of everyone, Hayter seems to have acted the best way out of this, with the most interest in the fans.I thank him for that.

let's just remember that kojima is a genius and people say all the time that working with a genius is a real hard time, but in the konami/kojima conflict i personally took the kojima side. i understand him in everyway but in the hayter/kojima conflict ( which i dont know if ever was, because hayter said so many times that he doesn´t know kojima personally) i have to take hayter's side because i really think that kojima productions could have handled the issue better by at least telling hayter that they where going in a diferent direction for MGSV. i remember in 2014-15 everybody was mad because hayter was replaced but after the game came out i see a lot of people angry because of hayter's statement, which brings me to the point, everybody thinks that kojima is a saint now because konami fuck him over but he basically did the same thing to hayter. just because he was a victim doesn't mean that he can't be a dick also....SORRY FOR THE LONG POST AND MY BAD ENGLISH!

Wait, Hayter hasn't played the latest two iterations, meaning what, 4 and 3? For all the people who seem to agree with him about the lack of his persona in V, he really seems to be bitching too much about his own absence there. V's gameplay is great, could've been better but apparently I'm in the bag with few people who really enjoyed Keifer's performance and voice. Hayter's last comment here seems to bring out his hurt ego, too.

first Big Boss was already voiced by someone else and that always hit me wrong but Rakensen has the right of it, i was getting the feeling Kojima knew a lot of people would not like Keifer so they made it to where the main Character in his game has the Bobba Fetta problem very little lines and if one is going to change a character don't be afraid to go all in, me I was salty and raging when Ground Zeros came out but when I started playing 5 it did not bother me at all

I've played MGS since 1998 when the first PS-version came out. I was 10 years old and went into town with my father after he quit work one evening, and bought a PS1 and MGS. being used to playing games like goldeneye, and being at that age, I wasn't too happy about long cutscenes, but this was something else - the music and the voice acting. the character snake has become part of me, and I've played all the MGS games since. Solid Snake has been sort of like a role model to me while growing up, and it helped me get through cancer and a lot of other bullshit, and David Hayter IS Solid Snake, there's no fucking way of replacing that. MGS5 is eye candy, nothing else. no soul, bullshit story, boring weapons etc..

Stupid really, after casting David the first time he was never going to be replaced, I understand why but it sounded really pretentious from how it was decribed. I'm grateful that David didn't walk away from MGS because 3 & 4 were some of my favourite games. I doubt though many could blame him based on how he was treated. I would have probably walked away after being made to re-audition / going behind his back. Low class and lack of spine from Kojima.

Kos 291 I haven’t, but it also doesn’t matter. He treated the cast of MGS V pretty harshly too when it came to doing Death Stranding. It’s fine to want different actors but despite acting all buddy-buddy with them, he doesn’t even have the courtesy to talk to or address them when the next thing comes along. It’s worse with Snake though because Hayter had a long career with them as apposed to a one-off, and it looks like Kojima handled communication poorly or at least not showing any respect. It sounds like Kojima was trying to brush him off as much as possible rather than saying he’s appreciated but he won’t fit in the story.

This is the way of the business people. I have a strong feeling that Kojima is a perfectionist in every sense of the word, and if he felt that there was a need to get a replacement for Hayter, who are we to disrespect that. I see comments of people who are saying that they "Dislike Kojima now", because of the alteration in the cast. Ocelot had a voice change in MGS 3, because his character was portrayed as younger, so why the hell couldn't he change that of Snake's voice? I don't think you can call yourself a true MGS fan if you give the creator stick, for changing up things. One of the main reasons for Kiefer replacing Hayter, was due to the fact that Snake was going to portray feelings using facial expressions, by using the face MOCAP, and they needed a seasoned actor to get the full effect of this. Kojima is the master behind Metal Gear, not David Hayter.
