Today the words "legend" and "epic" are so overused, but David Hayter is truly a legendary voice in the history of video games. He brought so much life into Snake and Metal Gear it's unbelievable.

I remember reading or hearing somewhere that Hayter could not bring himself to play through MGSV. Now, I don't know if this is true or not... but seeing as he is very obviously invested in the series, part of me kinda wishes that the big "twist" of MGSV would put his mind at ease. What I'm referring to is the fact that, barring Ground Zeroes, the Snake you play as in MGSV is a phantom made in the image of Big Boss. With that in mind, I could see someone thinking "well, it's not -really- Snake, so it's OK if he's voiced by someone else (Kieffer in this case)."

But in the end, Sutherland portrays both roles. Kojima decided to chase his deeply instilled idea of being a hollywood director and chose a famous actor from his time as a young man watching movies over being loyal to his coworkers. It is important to remember that since the first Metal Gear Solid, Kojima has wanted the franchise to be finished. Who knows how much resentment he had towards Konami and the entire game development process of Metal Gear? Maybe he decided that if he was forced to make another Metal Gear game, he was going to do whatever he wanted, including fulfilling childhood dreams of hollywood. I wonder who else he reached out to to play Snake. Harrison Ford thanks to his role in Blade Runner? Who knows. In the end, we are all extremely saddened at the premature loss of Snake and the sudden departure of Metal Gear Solid.

Konami took MGS to “Hollywood” big budget and made it a hot mess to the point of collapse. Too top-heavy, while neglecting the base foundation that held it up all these years. As soon as David Hayter and eventually Hideo Kojima got taken off the project, the franchise immediately ended. The rest is history, LITERALLY.

Not really. Solid Snake was 34 in the Shadow Moses incident (MGS1) yet had already started aging prematurely. Two years later in the tanker chapter of MGS2, Snake had already aged ten more years. By the time MGS4 rolled around, it was nine years after Shadow Moses and Snake appeared to be a man in his late 70's, even though he was only 43. Casting a younger actor, in this instance, wouldn't be appropriate. (Unless you were wanting to start at Operation Intrude N313 with a rookie Solid Snake)

Kojima is an artist and Konami is a company to make money. No matter how good intentions are for Konami or Kojima there is a point where the money stops and the product needs to get out.
