Years and years ago I constantly griped about garbage laying around, especially the garbage that made it's way into my yard, driveway, parking spot, etc. I was mad all the time about it. One day I had the revelation that I was making myself sick about garbage/disrespect of the earth. Boom! From that second on I started picking up garbage whereever I am. I got a 'grabber' to pick stuff up. I carry some gloves with me to keep the hands clean. I am not mad anymore because the situation is in my control now...True Confession.

I saw him once, outside of a theatre we were to see him do a reading/signing in that evening-- I'd had a tough day--- things with my Dad, specifically-- he was walking by with some very sophisticated looking local ladies, I had tickets for his reading that evening, and he looked at me as they were walking by, as it was clear I'd been crying quite a bit, and I saw him and said, "Putt To Win," and he looked at me as if we understood one another on a higher plane. I'll never forget it. Big fans of his writing might get it. Daddy Issues.

People who say "is that really the biggest problem?" in that tone anoy the heck out of me. Are we only allowed to act on one problem at a time? How will we get anything done that way?
@k.i.rogers70962 жыл бұрын
He's right, who's "for" trash? Ignoring it and thinking "others will take care of it" isn't working. Let's take ownership of our communities and get back into civic engagement. This is a mindset - don't be a Trashole.
@QueenMegaera6 жыл бұрын
This is so inspiring! I try and pick up stuff I pass by on my way here and there, because it makes me feel better than being angry and sad about the littering AND WALKING ON PAST IT. Hopefully some of the people who see us pick up trash are inspired to act or shamed out of littering instead of just weirded out.

Way back in 1968, I was riding my bicycle to a friend's house, (about a mile on a country road in western Massachusetts) and randomly decided to pick up litter, arriving wirh 2 bags hanging from my handlebars. When I asked permission to put it in their garbage can, I was condemned by the mother, (an Irish immigrant) as a hippie weirdo, and my friend was forbidden to hang out with me. Why?

Not exactly made to feel welcome as a gay man in North Carolina, so he moved to France first and then England. We lost a national treasure in that move. His Santaland Diaries is one of my Christmas traditions. It's part of his multi-CD set Holidays on Ice. His timing and inflections are just killer from doing those readings all over the world. Thanks for believing in yourself, Mr. Sedaris.

Luckily where i like they do a provisional vote of like 12 issues and you get to pick 3 of the options on how to spend district money. I always pick things that keep the city clean. I petition my aldermen about it. And do it as a moment of zen for an hour before i go to bed. Broken window theory. might not do much but, it isnt nothing.

After reading about your picking adventures in Calypso and seeing a few friends follow suit, I tried my hand for a few hours a day after work in Japan. Unfortunately, the reason a lot of people toss garbage out over here is because there are some things that just aren't recyclable in Japan: they burn A LOT of plastic, and generally only collect metal and scraps once a month.

David seems to be Obsessive Compulsive. On another note, people in the beautiful suburbs of South Florida do the same thing. Walking a dog in that area is very difficult because among the many things they throw in the grass are chicken bones from well known fast food chains. Before you know it , your dog will be chewing on a bone that you couldn't see because the grass is too tall and thick, but the dog smelled it a block away. Very annoying, there other things that people throw out the window, like things with DNA. Let's leave at that.
