🎨 CADMIUM RED DEEP 🎨
Hi there!
In this episode of Painting Masters we'll be reviewing several paintings by David Taylor!
🎨 DAVID TAYLOR 🎨
I first became aware of David's work when I saw him in color in your life.
You can see that amazing episode here:
• Watercolour painting t...
I love his distinct and unique style. He is very colorful, and his works range from impressionistic to somewhat realistic.
🎨 TIME-STAMPS 🎨
00:16 - Introduction
01:42 - Quick review of multiple works
09:15 - In depth review of one painting
14:20 - Conclusion
🎨 MAIN OBSERVATIONS 🎨
1. The composition is excellent. Lot's of interest.
2. The arrangement of boats is genius. It creates an interesting eye movement.
3. The values are on point, giving this particular painting some realistic qualities. David even says so himself - the effect of getting all of your values right is tremendous.
4. The reflections are fresh and done skilfully. He used unique, muted brown colors.
5. Added some figures on the right to give this some life.
6. Used some splatters and also white opaque paint for some details in the foreground.
🎨 CONCLUSION 🎨
I highly recommend checking out more of his work. I hope to also do a study based on his work in the near future.
This is it for today. Take care, and I'll see you again tomorrow for Business Monday (:

Thank you for talking about David Taylor's work. I own one of his signed paintings and also have a painting by my Dad, Phil Coach, of me painting the same view at the same time. I also have my 'attempt' at capturing the same scene simultaneously. Fun times at Tarentaal. I was thrown into the "deep end" by my Dad. A baptism of water and paper and paint!!! Much LOVE to David and Diane.

Thanks! One of my fav artists. Some friends and I were just talking about him recently (off line.) I said: "If you see a painting across the room and need to move right up on it to see what medium it is, then, its most likely DT." Being an x-oil painter, I can see he actually uses some of those methods even though working in water color. I admire someone who can switch their brain light to dark and dark to light in the same painting. I love the foreground sand and pebbles in the one you chose to focus on... a good example of what I mean by looking like blended oils from a distance or even up close in this case. If I saw nothing else but that foreground, I wouldn't be at all sure what the medium was... then it would be the glass covering it that would tell me. I really admire his skill.

This is wonderful stuff. His range is quite wide from impressionism (simple) to very detailed (busy) and photo-like. He is great at breaking the "rules" and it works! His compositions keep your eyes busy but relaxed at the same time. I love the way he uses lots of sharp, bright colours in some paintings and soft, muted ones in others. A really nice variety. Thank you for bringing this guy to my attention. Another great review!

Thank you ^_^ And that's a great insight - he really does keep the viewers' eyes busy enough, but not too much to tire you.

Yes, one of my favorite painters! I love your series on master artists since this really is such a great way to learn, I also frequently analyse paintings and think about how the artist achieved some things, really impressive what can be done with basically paint, paper and a brush :) Do you maybe know Blanca Alvarez? She has quite a unique style and does goergous paintings of Spain streets and flower pots, her paintings always make me so happy :)

Thank you ^_^ And - I'm actually following Blanca on Instagram. She has such amazing works! Her colorful paintings are like nothing I've seen. Thank you for reminding me - I added her to the list and will do an episode on her soon.

Really interesting. Good work. DT really captures the Australian countryside, as well as his ‘peopley’ urban scenes. In fact that street scene you showed is about 5 minutes away from where my house is!

His works are simple but you can tell he masters watercolor techniques so well. I think he uses some opaque whites(gouache or white ink), watercolor whites, as well as leaving whites of the paper. In some parts, you can see he tints his colors with white a bit to create fuzzy and distant details. His techniques are so great. I dont think anyone who doesnt paint with watercolor would understand the incredible technical part of his works, judging by how he never complicates things.
@LironYan

Yes, that is a great insight. He works as simple as possible but creates amazing effects. Every brush stroke is economic. And also - I notice the opaque white, but didn't catch the white mixes - thank you for opening my eyes!

This is great. Really good break down of the painting process. Very helpful aswell. Look forward to another one! Do you know which blue David Taylor uses for his skies and distant hills the granulation in the Cornwall scene is mesmorising! Perhaps Manganese or Cerulean?

based on your taste in watercolor, i'm guessing your next review might be Robert Wade or Herman Pekel.
@LironYan
@LironYan 6 жыл бұрын
Those are wise guesses (; I really appreciate Herman Pekel, but for some reason am less attracted to his work. I think it's mainly his color use (though he does have some works that I think are FANTASTIC looking, and maybe in the future I'll connect more with it. Robert wade is incredible, and in fact - I didn't yet have him on my list. So thank you for reminding me :D
