Saw Morbid Angel years ago, when Vincent first rejoined, and his stage banter was pretty bizarre. At one point he introduced Pete Sandoval, and said something to the effect of "It's great to have a real man like Pete, pounding away behind you!" I just had to share that story here.

Not gonna lie, I'm definitely 'guilty' of listening to FAR too many new releases each year, raving about them, and then the following year almost forgetting they even existed. Guilty as charged! 🤔🤷 One exception though, was my favorite album of 2023, Alkaloid 'Numen'; I still listen to that one frequently, actually just heard the amazing track 'Clusterf*ck' yesterday. Maybe a bit to 'progressive' for Nate, but the musicianship and songwriting abilities of these gentlemen is off the charts! 👌 Speaking of grindcore, I also still listen to the 'Coronet Juniper' album from 2023 by Gridlink; they have a refreshing take on the genre, that I think Nate would appreciate. 👍 I must admit, that the prospects of being without my weekly 'Big Riff Energy' podcast fix for a couple of months don't sit with me well, but if it means a new, strong Spirit Adrift album in 2025, I will somehow manage.. 🤗 Stay strong, Nate! 🤘😎

I like the way you approach a critique; you make sure to use yourself, and a brief backstory - to tie in the critique - of others. It demonstrates humility, and you have to have some kind of self-deprecation… otherwise, it can inflate the ego. Get those (RIFFS) in brother! The dungeon is CALLING! 🎼

With respect, your challenge is not exactly fair. Our listening habits change over time, age, and our steady deathmarch toward an extinction event. As pre-streaming kids, most of us could only afford one new album every couple months, and play the hell out of them. Everything in our small collection got heavy rotation. But as you acquire more music, every year your library growing, it's no longer possible to play every single album every year. Even more so for someone driven to keep up with new music enough to have heard a hundred, or eight hundred albums in a year. After giving it a good baker's dozen listens in 2023, I probably last listened to Ghost in the Gallows, my #2 album last year, in February. Does that mean I'm done with it forever and don't love it? No sir. I may be promiscuous with my music, but I'm still loyal. Once I'm done with my 2024 year-end stuff, I will relax and enjoy all kinds of older music, and most likely some Spirit Adrift when the mood strikes. I still listen to older stuff every day. I was relistening to the newest Elbow album this weekend and realizing I still like them, and went back and listened to albums I hadn't heard in nearly two decades. Also, I revisit albums when I've attained a new perspective, and even move them up my lists. For example, Hällas - Isle of Wisdom was near the bottom 100 of my 2022 list. Often when I see a band live, their recorded music makes more sense to me, which is what happened when I saw them at Hell's Heroes. The album has since clawed it's way to my top 20 for the year. Same happened with albums by Blacklist, Hammered Hulls, Screamfeeder, Brad Mehldau's Jacob's Ladder (avant piano jazz covers of Rush!) and Split System. I'm always shifting stuff around, which drives some of my more anal retentive readers bananas. Nothing set in stone here, my relationship to music is dynamic! Best of luck to your endeavours in the bunker -- MAY THE RIFF BE WITH YOU.

Suffocation is one of the best active old school DM bands and I love parts that are so heavy that you can only laugh. Hobbs is a legend! My buddy Richie is the guitarist for I am Morbid and I really respect him but of course it is seen as a cash grab for mainly DV and PS. Just like the Cavalera/Sepultura thing, neither is perfect and what people want. It’s a posturing contest that is just really hard to watch. There is nothing like old school MA… It just can never happen again however I understand wanting to please the fans but also feed your family so it’s an unjust compromise that will perpetually continue.

went to the tour this week. i could have looked past all the cornball dave stuff if i am morbid didn't sound like shit. vocals were way louder than everything, could barely hear the guitars. i was pretty annoyed by dave changing up the vocal phrasing on a bunch of the songs too. Suffocation was sick, but the 808's were a bit much. New guy sounded a lot like Frank, and i appreciated the chops lol. UADA was sick too, sounded way better in a small smokey bar than the Wacken set i saw from earlier this year.

Shit, I’ll jump in and be the sacrificial David Vincent hater. I’m 56 and grew up in Tampa. Dave snaked that band from Mike Browning. They used to rehearse 2 doors from my buddy’s band at Skipper Road storage when they were writing Blessed Are The Sick, and Dave was pretty damned douchey. That band with his wife you are referring to is Genitorturers. Genitorturers were actually pretty cool back in the day, but leaving MA to do that shit was some ultimate pussy whipped bullshit. Now Dave cosplays as a gay cowboy. Don’t get me wrong. I fucking love MA. They are true innovators, but I will alway be a Vincent hater.

Been listening to Lefay's The Seventh Seal today. Heavy power metal with hints of doom and thrash with a Jon Olivia-styled vocalist. I heard it forever ago when it came out and immediately fell in love with the band (and the original moniker, Morgana Lefay). Unfortunately the band kind of fell apart, went too modern, and I've heard about various other problems.

2023 Albums I've spun this year that were actually in my top 10 that I can remember 🤔 Enforced-War Remains last year's #2 & Ghost at the Gallows got most spins & was last year's #1, Necrofier was there too but Obituary, Deathchant & Dream Unending/Worm split all got alot of air time but weren't in my top 10 list I don't think 🤷 Creeping Death & Poison Ruin a bit here & there still too. As for '22 Municipal Waste & Darkthrone are the only 2 still got alot of spins this year.

Have you heard the silliness at a Kreator show the last 15 years or so? The stage banter is awful. Show is good. Music is good (although I'd rather less anthemic crowd singalong stuff and more 80's stuff but that isn't going to happen) but Mille urging a circle pit every few minutes. Really tiresome. On a different note, we didn't get a Terrorizer cover when I Am Morbid came here last year - the only disappointment of the show

I saw suffocation live recently in Mesa Az and yeah I def noticed the 808 drops like every single song lmfao. It kinda took me out a little bit, some of their songs also had a massive snare reverb thing during the breakdown segments. I noticed their kick drum was super clicky and during certain parts of their songs the sound guy turned the gain way up on the drum triggers and it sounded a bit much. All that aside suffocation put on a great set and the guitar solos sounded great at the venue I was at. Their new vocalist is definitely a deathcore guy he was hyping the crowd constantly and he had those kinds of mannerisms lol but I don’t mind too much cuz he’s great. I am Morbid was surprisingly very good, I saw morbid angel live in 2023 with Trey and Steve and while they were good, I am Morbid played way more of the classic Morbid angel tracks. They played songs from the first 4 albums and the terrorizer cover and the sound was amazing. They maybe werent as br00tal as suffocation but they brought the riffs, and those classic morbid angel records still blow away many modern death metal bands coming out today (including fulci who played at the show too). On David Vincent’s stage banter it brings up something in the back of my mind, there were a lot of rumors in the 90s that he got kicked from MA for being a white supremacist. So yeah I guess that’s food for thought when hearing him rant On a side note knoll was absolutely killer and that was the first time I had ever really listened to them. They put on a great show for sure. Fulci was okay, they played a lot of breakdowns and had a few riffs but imo they weren’t interesting enough to make a large standout.
