This stuff is great! And I love hearing how it used to be, and seeing the old hardware. Knowing how things used to work helps especially when you want to know why something is the way it is now. When you see what it used to be and the problems they were trying to fix you get what we have now. Then the next generation of hardware builds on what we have today.

I've always thought of the switch and router like a post office. If you send a letter to someone in the same zip code (subnet), the post office just has to drop it in that person's box or send it in a truck to their house. If you send it to someone in a different zip code, the post office has to send it to the other post office or to a distribution center and let them handle the rest.

Can you do a video on how a firewall is basically able to act as both a router and switch at the same time? in most modern networks today Routers have practically been replaced by Firewalls, as it has more capabilities and allows for more granular control of inbound and outbound network traffic, but it also has VLANS to connect to a LAN switch so multiple devices can communicate and be inspected.

Been doing networking since 2015 and this is actually my first time seeing actual 10base5,2 cables. Seein it physically now makes me wonder howmuch such topologies influenced office setups, how they're always all clustered up, side to side like on the movies you know.
@chitlitlah4 ай бұрын
I went to college for IT around the turn of the millennium and my college still had at least one computer lab that used thinnet (10base2). The bus cables would run a brief distance from computer to computer along the front row, and then there was a long cable that ran back to the wall and back to the first computer on the second row, and so on. Classrooms and labs are already set up in a way that makes it easy, but I imagine like you said they'd have to put more thought into it for an office and perhaps rearrange the office to make it easier.

Hey guys I have a question. Whenever a switch doesn't know an address it floods the network like a hub to find the address. After it learns the address it records it in it's Mac address table but it's gone in like a few minutes. So for instance, a few days go by and the switch needs to send a message to that same address again does it have to flood the network again like a hub to find it so it can populate it's Mac address table all over again?
@biswajitmishra70293 ай бұрын
The mac address table is not gone in few minutes brother. Here are a few scenarios where a switch might forget its MAC address table: - Power Cycle: When the switch is powered off and then back on, it typically clears its MAC address table. - Aging Timeout: Entries in the MAC address table have an aging time. If a MAC address isn't seen for a specific period, it will be removed from the table. - Manual Clearing: Network administrators can manually clear the MAC address table for troubleshooting or reconfiguration purposes. - Software Reset: A software reset of the switch can also clear the MAC address table.
@Cyberwolf-kp4yy3 ай бұрын
@@biswajitmishra7029 oh okay thank you. So what does it mean when a Mac address is stored in the Mac table for 300 seconds and then it's gone?

Why are customer databases still being hacked into and data stolen when there are physical firewall devices implemented between the company network and the Internet?
@pmanolakАй бұрын
because there are always bugs in both software and hardware design that someone can use to manipulate the system and possible scenarios that the original designers did not thought about it and someone can use it to bypass the protection. As we said, everything that can be locked, can be also unlocked. Its the same case why an experience lock-picker can unlock even the highest priced and well designed lock. And none company can ever design a lock that could not be unlocked somehow. There are out there enough smart people and some of them are even smarter than the guys working in Cisco or any other companies that design and sell network and computers equipment or software.
