We do have a member in our club who will tell you, if it fails before Xmas it's mites. There are some parts of the country where beatles kill more hives then mites. I think that the month with the highest failure rate is Feb.

Beetles overwinter then explode in late winter.

What do you do to deal with small hive beetle, varroa, etc. in a Layens horizontal hive? I know the Langstroth hives are the primary types in use, but it would be useful to know what you do for horizontal hives. Thanks for any info.

If you have to modify the hive to put screen bottoms with oil pans underneath, Beatle barns with murder sauce as bait, also I modified 8 frames by routing a 1/4 inch slot to each frame to accept oiltraps like langstroth frames

I use my same techniques such as oil traps and breaking the queen's brood cycle.

We had a bad round of hive beetles here in NE Ohio this year..was ridiculous

Crazy!! So hard to stay on top of them as they multiply soooooooo fast.

I had the same issue but I'm fairly sure it was mite issues and they dwindled before i caught it.

Happens to all of us. With day to day life, it's not always easy to stay on top of everything.

Hi David! I noticed yellow jackets flying in all three of my hives yesterday. It was in the upper 40s yesterday and the honey bees were all inside. Would you be worried? I have a bottle feeder away from the hives in front of my window so i can observe the bees feeding. I have noticed that yellow jackets come to the feeder at lower temperatures than honey bees. Once it warms up to around 50 the honey bees take over the feeder. I found the yellow jacket nest that was inside my house walls that was keeping them warm enough that the 20 degree nights haven't killed them off yet here in Pennsylvania. Update... It just reached 48 with a real feel of 46 and 2 honey bees just came to the sugar water feeder.

Well this is my 4th year trying and failed again - I’m beyond upset - got all the bee feeding stuff this year been feeding them my last check when I did mite treatment in sept they seemed doing well had honey which I didn’t touch last weekend went to feed them ( did each week) and all my bees were dead - honey gone - I’m finally giving up - I planted bee friendly plants had my hive in my garden did the mite treatments I’m just sick to my stomach I worked so hard only wanted one or two hives for my own honey and fail fail fail 😭

I’m sorry to hear that. This was only our first year with two hives, and we experienced the same thing with one of them. It was bustling and we were feeding them and did the mite treatments, and then one day all I saw going in and out were Yellowjackets and no bees up in the feeder. It felt like it was almost overnight. Our other hive is still going, but barely. I doubt they’ll make it through the winter.

September too late for mite treatment. In most parts of country your winter bees are emerging in September. You need healthy bees to raise the bees that will be raising winter bees. For your location move your treatment up at least 42 days.

I've been at it for 5 years, do all the same things you mentioned and still haven't had a hive make it through the winter but I will keep trying as should you... good luck 🤞

Thx for the video, David. I love these cause I try to diagnose myself during it and then I get to see if I was on the right track. 6 year beekeeper here. I nailed it :D Thankyou for all of your knowledge. You've helped me so much. not gonna lie, I missed the swarm cells but I knew the hive was weakened and got taken over by the evil shb.
