Merry Christmas David. We are first year bee keepers. My wife and I built our bee yard from scratch. Cleared brush at the edge of a hay field. Smoothed out the ground, put a 6.5 foot high fence around the edges, had gravel brought in, which we leveled. Put wind break material on the fence on the north side of the bee yard. And we build our own bee hive stands that will suit us for handling the hive boxes. It has been fun.

It is fun isn't it. You certainly understand the point of my video. Awesome!

I'm in the process of making 500 frames from raw lumber. Its a lot of work but the repetition and quiet (from wearing earplugs) is very theraputic, its a nice escape from the fast pace life we all live these days.

I always made my own top and bottom boards. Whether with cedar migratory lids bought from Dadant, or from plywood, and OSB sheathing from my job site with 1" x 2" overhanging cleats. Also I did build some of my own deep and medium boxes at one time. Bottom boards with the same cedar T&G 1" x 4"s from Dadant with 2" x 2" cleats underneath per Randy Oliver was the standard for me. I never bought anything else in this area except just the boards from Dadant unassembled. Sometimes I would cut my own 1"x 4"s, T&G them on my table saw and glue them together or cut edges square grooved with 1/8" x 3/4" x 22" splines. Also I always used 5 frame deep nucs for rearing queens from 9/10 day old cells bought from local commercial queen breeders or from my swarm cells in my own hives. To me it was important to have as many fat young producing Royal Jelly nurse bees to feed and raise a newly hatched queen. Also I gave her a good three plus weeks to get mated and start to lay newly fresh eggs in quantity before I pulled her to requeen, put in another cell, or just leave alone to build up as a nuc. Sometimes I would pull frames of brood and bees from these nucs to beef up a struggling hive, Michael Palmer way. So, Thanks and continue to make more educational videos for all of us to see. I've enjoyed the ones watched already. 🐝

Looking forward to the Queen rearing videos I tried a little this last year and plan to do more next year, if my bees make it through winter it was my first year and I got a bit behind on mite treatments in late summer/fall so I guess we’ll see :).

I made my own triangular bee escapes and it took a day, used the laser cutter for precise pieces and spacing, had to buy the materials, then assemble. At the end of the day I made four of them and with raw materials alone I could have probably bought some. I only saved on shipping. Some items are so much cheaper to purchase than to make. My five frame nucs I am able to do for $8 a nuc and I make simple bottom boards out of cedar fence boards. Anything else I've tried making is pretty much a loss.

I'm useless at wood work, but will attempt to make underfloor entrances in the new year. Maybe I'll try to make a video of it. Equipment assembly almost put me off beekeeping but glad I stuck with it. Each mistake is a lesson for next time!

Could you please explain why feed 1:1 42days before honey flow? Thank you
@beek7 күн бұрын
I've made several videos explaining this. It takes about 42 days from the egg for a bee to become a forager. So I raise foragers so that they are at the right age to start foraging when my first spring flowers bloom.

Hi David. I sure hope you see this comment. I saw a KZbin video by inside the hive tv. This guy showed a new high tech electronic device with a supposed extremely high mite kill. If you wouldn’t mind looking into it and giving your opinion it would be greatly appreciated.

It’s true. I have lost 5 hives this fall. First time I ever lost hives in the fall. They had honey and had done OA mite treatment. No dead bees in the hive the bees were gone. No dead bees on the ground either.
@sunshineapriaries7 күн бұрын
You have to do about 4-6 OA treatments every 4 days to keep the mite loads down per hive. We make OA extended release strips and use 3 per deep to manage the mite loads and replace the strips every 65 days.
