I have books with David Finch's incredibly well-detailed and rendered finished art but even the quality of his working sketches knocks most pros out of the water. What a resource this is!!
@tsdobbi2 ай бұрын
What is great about it is at it's core what he does is extremely simple. Like in these, they are simple two tone drawings, thats it. There is no feathering, no hatching. However, they look stellar because of his unparalleled understanding of anatomy and lighting. In his finished pieces he definitely incorporates those things. However, So many comic artists finished work doesn't hold a candle to how these "simple sketches" work and describe the forms.

I've been following your work since Ascension and have pored over your use of lighting and hatching for hours, so these videos have been very helpful and I thank you for taking the time to produce them. One thing I've been curious about: what is your motivation for making these videos? Is it a hope to pay forward what you've learned and help the next generation of artists? Filling in time between projects for fun? I know you (and many of your peers) came up in the heyday of the Image studios (like Top Cow for you, or Extreme, Homage/Wildstorm) where collective knowledge was shared and growth was more communal - so I love the idea that you're doing a version of that digitally.

Dave, thanks for showing the iterative process in constructive drawing -- I think it's invaluable for beginners. Have you always penciled in graphite, or have you also used non-photo blue? Do you know if inkers have a common preference working over one vs the other, or does it vary by individual? Thanks!
@DavidFinchartist4 жыл бұрын
I tried blue for a little bit, but it doesn't erase well, and I don't like how the finished page looks. I've had inkers say that ink beads up on it if it's too heavy.

This is a separate comment to the other one I posted in regards to requests for future tutorials in case you needed ideas or anything: drawing shoulders from different angles and when the arm is raised and lowered, back muscles in different angles and poses (with the stretching and contractions and such depending on pose), arms, and of course: the chest. The last one would be connecting the head to the torso (drawing neck from different angles and positions). Anyway, thank you!!
