GOODS OPERATIONS #02

Well here we are. I promised one day I would run a complete daily schedule of goods operations.
I have tried to make this video entertaining. It has taken some time to put together. There is a lot of camera work and post-production editing so it has been very time consuming. I think the effort has been worth it, I hope you agree.
I feel I have come a long way in the 4 and a bit years making my railway. There is still much to do. My early plan was to create a glorified shunting layout, and I think I have achieved this. Now I can think about the passenger services. I hope you like the video, more goods operations will come in the future. Please watch, subscribe and feel free to comment.

As a 73 year old newbie to model railway building (not yet started building) I am awestruck at the level of railway timetabling etc. that you have taken yours to. Must admit it has totally overfaced me! My admiration sir! Incidentally I noticed you have spelt vegetable with and I instead of an e on one of your timetables.
@davidhyde4329
@davidhyde4329 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Terry, the important thing first - the spelling mistake. Alas I slipped up here - I have corrected my timetable some time ago but its not possible for me to correct the video so it comes back to haunt me from time to time😁😁. On the subject of timetables - I need to make a video update on this subject as I have simplified it considerable. I take it you are a 1947 vintage like me - good luck with your layout. Happy New Year ... David

@@davidhyde4329 Hi David , Happy New Year to you Sir. Yes, 1946 vintage for me. Son of a railway signalman, never could afford an electric train set,. When I could afford one never seem to have time to make a layout. I'm thinking now of a small layout as shown in your videos, based on my dads railway signal box which was situated just before the Woodhead tunnel in Stalybridge. Loads of memories of the sounds of semaphore tapping , bells , levers being pulled and a large frying pan of eggs and bacon. Good shunting opportunities as Stalybridge had two stations operating side by side in the 1940s. There, I'm drifting into nostalgia. All the best David, keep up the good work. Terry.

Hi Terry, sign of my age - can't even remember how old I am 😁😁. I will be 73 this year - born in '47. Like the sound of your railway idea. If my father was a signalman I would 100% use this to base my layout design design on. Those listed things you remember are gold dust for modelling projects. I have done lots of research and have completely overlooked semaphore tapping and the sounds of bells and levers (I might pinch these from you for my next video 😁😁). All the best Terry ... David

@@davidhyde4329 your welcome david, a quick question: as I said I am a complete novice and the main building (apart from the stations) is four storel L+Y goods warehouse. Which I only have a photo of in a magazine, what height would you give in millimetres in 00 gauge for a model of this size of building? Thanks. Terry.
@davidhyde4329
@davidhyde4329 4 жыл бұрын
Wow, Terry, that's some question. First I would look at the photo and find something on the bulding you can estimate the size of. Doors are great for this - choose normal 'people access' doors, not the large warehouse doors. (Beware of perspective in photos - pick a door thats on a wall directley facing you if possible. I would then use this as a measure to calculate the height of the building. An average door I guess is 6ft 6inches high which is about 1980mm. Divide this by 76 gives you a scale door height of approx 26mm. I would then scan the photo into my computer and enlarge it until the printed door size is 26mm and this will give you the height of the building (and a a lot of other detai)l. You should be able to do this on an A4 piece of paper (You don't need all the builing printed to get the measurements.). If you cant find a suitable measure Google 4-srorey warehouses of the period you want and serch for an image that has such a door and work out the height of this building - then apply this height to yout warehouse building - hope this makes sense - good luck ... David

I concur with you Mike. It is a thorough going grand job and well presented in true East Anglian style. The detail and precision is most enjoyable to experience as an onlooker, and it clearly must have required hours of painstaking care and craftsmanship. I was particularly impressed by your excellenly designed laminated cards and scheduling sheets which look superb for their jobs and also feel very true to period. Who needs computers...back to paper! Thank you for a pleasurable and educational video.

Brilliant! Really enjoyed that, like watching a great shunting layout at an exhibition, but with a nice cometary so you know what's going on and a nice back story. Must have taken a huge amount of time to put together, making each move, moving the camera, repeat. Then editing it all together. That wide shot from the bridge is really nice.

What a great video and a really nice layout, so well operated. I model in 0 Gauge and run my goods wagons in pairs with hook and bar to the inside and sprat and winkle couplings on the outer wagons. This means that I always have a hook on the end wagon ,but the downside to this method no single wagon movements, But that's the compromise I'm willing to make. Thanks once again for posting ,looking forward to the next episode.
@davidhyde4329
@davidhyde4329 5 жыл бұрын
Many thanks for your kind comments. I see how you operate your wagons. I am doing something similar, having to run one wagon with S&W hooks at both ends with each train. I too am willing to make this compromise. The upside for me is that I only need a hook at one end on my other wagons, and no hook at all on the locos ... David

My layout is almost ready for operations and is based at Peterborough North, era2 and 3, GNR and LNER, with one mainline loop and one branch line loop, with two terminus stations yet to be determined but possibly Cambridge and another local station. It also incorporates the now dissused line from Peterborough via Eye and Thorney to Cambridge

Thanks Michael. The actual time commitment did cross my mind early on, but I find it isn't a problem. I don't know how long the average session takes with people who run continuous loops but I can't see a reason why it should be different. My railway is not time driven. Time only moves on when each train operation is complete. A whole, uninterrupted, day operating my railway is not my idea of fun. So I break it down into smaller sessions. I often just run the morning or afternoon goods operations. I do like the continuity aspect of a railway that operates on a day-by-day basis but I spread the operation over a longer period, as time allows. Of course I could, and do from time-to time, simply run what I fancy, or until I get fed up. Probably not much different to any other type of layout I would imagine - David

To cement Deresley even more into the real world : BEHIND THE SCENES : Mavis is actually Stan's missus and while he's been busy shunting all afternoon, Reg has been doing some shunting of his own with Mavis in the stationery cupboard. Poor old Stan has been suspicious for quite some time, and has hired a private investigator (Oliver "No case too small" Luke), who can be seen standing in the doorway of the gents at 24:47.

Hi David, I just by chance found your channel and am so glad I did! I have discovered model rail perfection! I have so many comments and questions I feel like I will burst lol. Better get started then. I'd love to know about your locos and stock please? makes etc. As someone who has tried so hard for many years to build in soundscapes to his own videos I am blown away by the detail and nuances you have achieved, truly inspirational. And that brings me onto the sky and backdrops I noted 8:27 for example, how are you doing this, if its chroma key then you have mastered it? Equally the signal box view at 28:24 was remarkable and I must ask how you did it? Another thing of note was the changing sky and light as the day wore on, this again is a masterful detail that I have never seen applied before. As a train driver, starting my career in the early 80s I am delighted to see the way you run operations, realistic to a fault! and your narration was spot on. You won't be surprised to learn I have subscribed and will be checking out your other videos. My channel only started in December last year, it is a separation from kzbin.info where most of my videos still exist. Thanks Mike. I am glad you have found my channel - I don't know about perfection, but I am very flattered. Anyway, on to the questions:- Locos are RTR Hornby, Bachmann and Lima. I bought some older locos in the beginning but had running problems, decided on balance that it was a false economy. I have 10 working locos now and some older, more temperamental ones. No mys sky's and scenic enhancements are done with video masks. I will be doing a video on this as the effect has drawn a lot of interest. They can be made within my video editing software but I make mine using photoshop elements. I would like to change the lighting more. I have 5 overhead LED floodlights to give a top light with 2 more on stands to fill. It gives me an overall 'ready-to-go' light for video. I am going to experiment with colour filters this year - again there will be a video later in the spring. Hey, It's nice to have a 'proper' comment from a real railwayman. Glad you liked my go at goods operations. Apologies for the delay in reply, I have been away for much of this dreadful week. I will check out your railway Mike, thanks for the link, regards - David

Hi David, great to hear from you. Yes i was wondering about your 08 class looks like a venerable model. I highly value my older locos, Triang Wrenn and Lima. Ah a video mask, I have seen that function in my editor (Corel video studio 10x) but never tried it. I will await your video with great interest. Lighting is such an issue, I use a pair of large CFL box lights for big productions, and LED panels for smaller one. I have recently found a very good one that has variable output and variable Kelvin output from 3300 to 5600 www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01KZN9YOE/ref=pe_3187911_185740111_TE_item needs a powersupply as well I use www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0711FB8WH/ref=pe_3187911_185740111_TE_item I wonder if this is how you did your morning to evening effect? Hi, Ah yes, my Old Hornby Class 08 - a case in point. Bought it cheap for £30 (DCC Fitted). A pain over points, A nightmare over double slips. Bought DCC Concepts Stay alive decoder (£25) - didn't work. Hattons replaced, that didn't work either. In frustration I tinkered with it and blew it. Abandoning DCC Concepts (never used them since) I bought an American TCS Keep alive decoder. Worked perfectly straight out of the pack. It now runs sweetly as you can see. But it has cost me £90 and a lot of fiddling about. I am sure Masks are available in Corel Studio Software. They are in my Movieplus X6 software which is not as powerful as yours. However, because I have been using photoshop elements for many years I have been using this to create my masks. I am currently using LED garden floodlights at the moment. They are daylight balanced (although I do manually set my white balance). They are cheap (less than a tenner) and they are powerful. Well 30 watts each. I have 5 of them permanently fixed over my layout for top lighting and a couple of extras on stands for fill lighting. I am going to experiment with colour filters etc, although I could adjust the white balance in my camera. The lights plug into the mains. Watch out for the video, I will try and get it all in there. Regards - David

Lots of work, setting up shots and finding camera angles. I use up to 3 cameras and some 'studio' lighting. And that's without the editing afterwards. A labour of love - you could call it. My techniques have improved over time, but I am always looking to improve - thanks for the question ... David

Many thanks Bob, really appreciate your comments. I had to look again and blimey, you are right, well spotted. I probably won't alter the numbers as the units are not normally together, but I will photoshop the image before I use it again. Talking of photoshop, it came in handy for making (what I call) the main 'scenic mask' establishing Deresley near the coast. Using the viewpoint and perspective on the filmed clip I did a perspective distortion on the mask (using 3 still images) until it looked about right. I did over 40 scenic masks for this video, some quite small, but they help maintain the illusion of reality. Time consuming but I an thrilled with the comments received - so far. Thanks again - David

David, what a great pair of videos. I have been looking for information on UK goods operations and this is the best so far. But first, are your backscenes CG or photos, they seem to change, or is that dynamic lighting changes? Now for a question on operations. In the UK did all shunting occur at goods sheds in stations or would there also have been sidings along the man and branch lines for individual businesses as in the US where I am? This is something I have not been able to find an answer to and it is critical for designing a UK layout. All the layout plans i have seen so far only have goods sheds and sidings in station areas. Of course I see there would also be shunting at dock and collierys. Did the railroads deliver goods from their sheds to customers or did the customers pick up their goods at the sheds? This is all very different than on my US Southern Railway where in addition to freight depots there were industries and businesses all along branches and mainlines with sidings where freight cars would be delivered and/or picked up by local trains. Looking forward to viewing all your videos over the coming week or two. Thanks
@davidhyde4329
@davidhyde4329 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your interest and your kind comments. My backscenes are part CG in that I take stills from the video into Photoshop and from those form masks from actual sky (and scenery where needed) photographs. These are then overlaid in my video editing software to get rid of all distractions (including my room) that would otherwise appear in the video. I can vary the sky shots and my lighting to change the look of the video. It is very time consuming but I think the effort is well worth it. I am not a great expert in the actual operation of goods/freight in the UK. But there were large goods siding/handling facilities called 'marshalling yards' where freight would arrive and be re-grouped to form local trains - kind of like depots in road transport. Layout plans in the UK normally only include local goods handling. There is usually a goods shed, coal staithes etc - prior to the 1960's there may also have been provision for livestock - cattle pens and such. Local business would fetch and carry from the goods yard, although read haulage was nationalised until the 1950's and they would also collect and deliver. Larger companies would have had their own rail operations linked to the national network. They would have had their own wagons, hoppers, tankers etc and would have their own loading/unloading facilities. The collieries would have their own liveried wagons - coal was king in the UK and rail transport was the main way of distribution. Until WW2 there were plenty of colourful wagons on the railway but the lack of maintenance during the war followed by nationalisation of the railways in 1946 put pay that. Other industry with private wagon fleets were in agriculture, minerals and mining, petroleum and fuel oils, steel and other 'heavy' industries. Much of this type of industry was nationalised until the 1960s 1970s or even later. Back to modelling though, there is no great interest in the goods aspect of railway modelling. I am interested in it and I know from watching many of the impressive US layouts that it exists on a scale (size and detail) that does not really exist in the UK. Hope this helps - hope you like the rest of my videos - there will be more in the future. Regards ... David

Hi Lois, my sincere apologies for not responding earlier. Have done very little to my railway recently. Thanks for your kind comments. I will be uploading a new video later today. As you say, nothing is ever finished - and so it is with my goods operations. I have found my 'dice' system fine for operating as a 'shunting puzzle' but cumbersome when running a daily schedule - so my manual (at the time if your asking) has been changed - or rather simplified. I have not made up a new written manual as yet. Also I am now trying to run it together with passenger services - there will be a timetable shown on my new video which I hope helps. When I produce an amended manual I will show it. My email address is dahyde@aol.com - I am happy to send you a copy of my existing manual but please take into account the above. Apologies again ... WHAT NO COMPREHENSION OF THE RULE BOOK !!! The problem with this particular method of operating freight trains is that it has overlooked the complex rules concerning freight wagons. Which includes dozens of rules dictating where each type of wagon can be positioned in any freight train !!!! Indeed the wagons themselves have many markings on them that give hints about the rules. Such as "XP". White lines, & even the colour of BR owned wagons. All of which explains much of the shunting that had to be carried out at EVERY goods yard, marshalling yard & freight Depot, primarily to ensure all the wagons where in the correct position in every freight train. i.e you were not allowed to have a tank wagon of inflammable liquid positioned next to a "Gunpowder" wagon. Further if you had a tank wagon of concentrated "Hydrocyanic acid" it had to be run as a seperate train with two barrier wagons either side of it, and even though "Fully Fitted" was restricted to 30mph. This is because just one molecule of that lethal product was explosive on contact with the atmosphere. So a 45ton wagon full would explode and destroy EVERYTHING within roughly a ONE MILE radius. So was even more dangerous than a Nuclear Flask wagon !!!! A FEW EXAMPLES XP = Express Passenger, a little contradictory, but it meant that this vehicle could be added to a passenger train if and when required, although that would limit the train speed to 60mph. So usually only seen on branch lines or with local trains. VERTICAL WHITE LINES on vehicle corners, indicated a "shock wagon". So not allowed to be hump shunted, and MUST be in the "Fitted Head", or in a "Fully Fitted" freight train. BR BROWN/RED OXIDE coloured vehicles had vacuum brakes & were to be positioned behind the loco, in the "Fitted Head" BR PALE GREY coloured wagons were "Unfitted" so had NO train brakes, only a hand brake. So had to be coupled BEHIND any Brown/Red Oxide coloured wagons. All these complex wagon rules were reflected in the various "Classes" of train indicated by the position of headlamps on the loco. These being classes 4 to 9. Where Class 4 was a fully fitted Express Freight, such as a Milk train or Perishables traffic. Class 9 was a totally "Unfitted" train limited to 30mph due to the fact only the loco & Brake van had operational train brakes ! Class 0 was for Light locos (which could also haul a max 2 Brake vans) !! About 1968 BR changed Class 4 to reflect the new 75mph air braked Freightliner trains.
