Had to look it up but here’s a translation of the message her father left her. To Rin From: Dad “There was far too little time left after you were born. I wonder how much love I was able to show after your mother passed... Seeing you cheerful and well gave your old man courage. It really would have been better if we could have gone together, but I couldn't make it work. I thought I wanted you to forget everything and go forward...knowing you, you'll be okay. You'll realize your loneliness, and surely remember me. I believe that you'll grow strong and read this letter. I wish we could have made more memories. I'm sorry. When you were little you probably didn't understand well, but now you should. I'll say the words from that day once more.” He made her forget until she reached a age she would be able to understand. Shelter makes me tear up every time I watch it. It’s so beautiful 😭❤️

I have a suggestion. "Mystery skulls -Magic Animatic". This is a fan animation for a mystery skulls video that was never fully animated but was so good that the band loved it. So much so that when it was taken down to due someone's action the band themselves stepped in to get it reinstated because they loved it so much.

Porter Robinson himself has also talked about this: My absolute favorite thing in music -- art, more broadly -- is when it captures an overwhelmingly bittersweet feeling. When it perfectly marries grief & loss with hope & joy. As Porter put it (to paraphrase), it's when "someone can't leave because they're sick, but you're going to do everything you can to make them feel better." It's a powerful emotion that he just _gets,_ and I adore his music for it. The other example that just nails it: If you're ever watched "Your Lie in April", it's during the final duet (you know the one) -- it's the first note that Kaori plays.

i showed this to my friend and she cried a lot. this is why i love anime. they can do stuff that normal movies are limited at. like showing emotions and expresions and all sort of things. animation can show 1:1 how far human imagination can go and show it to the rest of the world, while movies have thousands of limitations like the actors, their skill and acting, the dangers of stuns places they film, and the standard for movies and how they are "suposed to be" so that people will like them there is a reason why anime live action or disney live actions are always so baaaad. they just cant show all those details of animations

Yo, glad you reacted to this! Everything about Shelter is amazing. Some of the elements in this track like the funkiness and the vocal chops are more of Madeon's style. I think you'd really like his stuff, too. If you wanted to give Madeon a try, I'd recommend either Miracle from his latest album, or if you'd like to see what viral video/track got him his start, lookup "Pop Culture" on KZbin, which is a live mash-up of 39 different songs. It's still a dope track and still just as impressive a decade later.

Not only was the animation made specifically for the song's music video, but when Porter presented his storyboard to A-1 he asked if he should change the girl's name to something other than 'Rin' since he had only been using it as a place holder. He was told quite firmly to leave it due to the CEO's daughter being named Rin, too, and that it would be more likely to get approved as it was. I noticed that you closed your eyes during a lot of sections where there weren't any lyrics, but by doing so you missed out on several important bits of the story being shown on screen. I highly recommend that you re-watch the video, but make it a point to pay attention to the animation while you're vibing - especially now that you know the gist of the story - so that you can see the amount of care and attention to detail the animators put into their work to give the story as much power as it had. There is an ongoing fan theory that several of Porter Robinson's songs are interconnected, the most notable of which being "Goodbye to a World" and "Sad Machine." Both of which are assumed to be from the point of view of (or at least someone speaking to) Rin while she's inside Shelter at some later point in time. Highly recommend both for future React videos! ^_^
@Icyangel102 жыл бұрын
The weird thing is that in a sense the short movie is in the matrix as you wondered. The description mentions Rin(the girl) has been living in a simulation making her own worlds to play in when she suddenly remembered why she's in the simulation to begin with. Also fun(maybe not) fact, she was 10 when she went into the simulation & is 17 now. Porter has some good songs you should try like Musician, Mirror, Something Comforting, Static Snow, Divinity, Sea of Voices & Unfold. There's others like Blossom but I don't want to keep rambling cause I probably already made this long enough.

The story of this animation and song always get to me. The world is ending. A planet is falling towards the earth, and there's nothing that can be done to stop it. You can see it in the simulation at key points. A hazy white sphere falling towards the sky. A planet hovering in the sky above the black and white region, hanging above a city. You can see it in multiple shots on TV, of a ruined Tokyo with it in the distance, of it mere hours or minutes from impact from satellite images. But rather than give into despair, what did Rin's father do? He put everything he had into saving her, and giving her the best last days together that they possibly could before sending her off in her own Shelter, sealing away those memories of the past and locking her in a simulation where she can live out her days in blissful ignorance until she was old and mature enough to understand. Her memories begin to come back. A swing. A rush of memories. A hazy sphere falling from the sky. A broken forest formed from the hazy memories of a shattered city beneath a hanging planet. And then those memories come flooding back in a recollection of those final days on Earth, ending with a pre-written message from her father, the final words of comfort to a girl who is truly alone in this universe, but sees not the despair and loneliness-- but the overwhelming love of someone who truly cared for her, and gave up EVERYTHING to save her. Even the lyrics get into some nice reflective story beats from Rin's perspective, but this comment is long enough without diving into them.

So, I've got a confession. I love both Porter Robinson and Madeon. I'm a big fan of their music and have been for a few years. But I have not, and can not, listen to Shelter after I heard it for the first time. The story was so bittersweet and emotional that I have to not listen to/watch it again because it hits me hard in the gut. not sure if you follow Porter Robinson's musical journey (can't say i really have myself either to be honest) but i recommend listening to his Nurture album mainly because it feels like a turning point he had. i think the album was like his response to when he was struggling as a musician at some point. i could be remembering it wrong, but it did feel like the reflection showed in a few songs' lyrics. i dunno if i could pick just one. maybe others could vouch for me and pick one specifically, but personally i loved Look at the Sky, Get Your Wish, Mirror and Something Comforting for the heartfelt context. maybe Musician might also be interesting as a fellow musician yourself?
