I would have made Suikoden 2 the #1 spot. Retrospectively, it is probably one of the greatest story-driven games of all time, with among the best characters and base-building mechanics ever devised.

Games in the mid 90s to the very early 2000s were easy as fuck, even without guides. The most difficult of games didn’t start coming out until around 2003, with the release of Nocturne. It got even worse in 2004 with Ninja Gaiden.

Also probably the thing i love most about the game is each time you play there are so many different scenes you could see depending on who is in your party that even after the 10+ play throughs ive done so far i still sometimes stumble on a new private action i havent seen before.

10: Yeah, I used to have that, regret trading it away. What a classic game it is. 9: This game, along with 3, are 2 of the finest JRPGs ever made. And holy shit does 4 have some cool party members. And the Art Style and Soundtrack are amazing. 8: Haven't played. 7: The game that game me into the genre. I watched my older cousin play it and HAD to have it. The music, the art style, the characters, THE ABILITY TO CHOOSE YOUR PARTY MEMBERS, the combat, everything about it I loved and still do. I hate that there are so few like it. And I wish Square Enix would go back to what made the series works, needs a Reboot probably due to the one twist. 6: Another game system that is friggin' awesome and I wish more devs would take inspiration, so many good ideas and most of them executed well. 5: This game is long as balls, but it is a very unique premise, building up your WORLD instead of a base is pretty unique as premises go. 4: This was a game I traded in, and unlike most examples, I re-bought it later on so I DO have a copy still. I still haven't gotten the Switch port, But I'm probably gonna fix that relatively soon, as this is also a friggin' gem. 3: Best game ever made period. I don't know why it's only number 3. ;) 2: Haven't played, but I've watched a good chunk of the game. It's crazy in all the right ways, although it does make me wonder what Japan's fascination with Gnosticism is. 1: I love the Lunar games, of which there is only 3, 1, 2, and Magical School. There was never a 4th game. I wish the series would come back. In the style of 1 and 2, and it HAS to be localized like Working Designs in or it won't be the same, the backlash for the PSP port is proof of that.

Jessie Reginrave Rosenqueen Saga 2 had one of the best stories of any RPG. Soundtrack was also legendary, much like Mana, there was not one miss on any of the tracks. It’s on my Top 10 non FF games.

Have to agree with you here, great list! And as a huge fan of Lunar, I recommend people check out the “Lunar: Silver Star Harmony” for PSP/VITA. Tons of quality of life improvements while still keeping that Lunar charm and a lot of Working Designs awesome humor! (Man, I miss Working Designs. Their localizations and incredible physical releases!)

Legend Of Legaia is hands down my favorite JRPG of all time. The music ALONE is worth the time it takes to play, the story is involved and often quite emotional, and the combat system is one of the best I've ever seen. Still crossing my fingers for David to do a playthrough!

I also loved Legend of Legaia. It's one of the rare games that actually gets better the further you get into the story. You can tell by the end of the game the developers really put their heart into it and wanted it to be something great for people to play.

Arc the Lad 2 To me those are the master pieces of the psx that stand the test of time, you can play them today and aside for graphics and minnor gameplay elements are excellent experiences, but sadly games like Xenogears for example to are almost unplayable today, I can stand the almost ridicule encounter rate but the jumping sections and horrible camera rotation are insane, that game really needs a remake or a book to enjoy the fantastic story.

Lunar was my first JRPG that I ever played and completed. The story and mechanics gripped me as a child, and as a result it has special place in my heart to this day. Played the psp version to relive it and still loved it. I love someone else enjoyed this game as well and rates so highly as to put at #1! Kudos.

I vastly prefer Lunar 2 over Lunar 1, and I'm always sad when Valkyrie Profile doesn't appear on any best of lists (be it best PSX games or best games of any system). Here's my top ten minus Final Fantasy games, with little thought given to sorting aside from the first two: Valkyrie Profile Xenogears Lunar 2 Chrono Cross Suikoden 2 Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (not really an RPG, but much better than most traditional RPGs and games on the system) Star Ocean 2 Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment (technically two games, but I'm considering them as one) Breath of Fire IV Tales of Eternia If Final Fantasy games were included, I would add Final Fantasy VII, IX, and Tactics, and subtract three of the games I listed after Symphony of the Night. There are a few major RPGs on the PS1 I haven't played, like Parasite Eve, although I did play of the games on David's list except for Legend of Legaia, which I should check out some time.

The only way I know about Star Ocean 2 was from the right friend when I started getting into JRPG's. I literally started out with FF7, Chrono Trigger, then went straight to Star Ocean 2. Boy did I talk to the right person because that action based combat for a PS1 RPG shocked me. By the final dungeon the fights got so intense it felt like I was playing a Contra game. But of course that wasn't the same after the 1st playthrough when I figured out a thing or two.

I haven't played Grandia or L7nar and they look so up my alley, it's like christmas for me. 2 seemingly legendary games that flew under my radar as a kid. Cant wait to start them.

I loved the era of RPGs that birthed the original Lunar on Sega CD, you should check out the Armor of Vay as well

I did not play all of the JRpGs on psx, but my personal favorites were all pretty early in the generation, Suikoden 1 and 2, Vandal Hearts, Wild Arms. Xenogears was good but the plot kind of fell apart by the end, I really like Chrono Cross except for all the filler characters. Never played Legend of Dragoon or Grandia but I think I would enjoy those. Lunar is great but I played it on Sega CD first so i don't think of it as a PSX game.

Love to see Lunar getting so much attention. If you like more of a challenge play the Lunar games from the Sega CD. I find the remasters on PS1 are to easy.

Funny story- just yesterday I was at my local game store and I narrowed my choices down to Breath of Fire 2 (SNES), Wild arms 2, or Legend of Legaia. I went with Breath of Fire 2 but now I see that I definitely need to get those other games next. Thanks for the great video today!

Arc the Lad is a pretty solid tactical rpg as well. Also done by Working Designs, and is released as the Arc the Lad Collection which has all 3 PS1 games in one package. Still working through the second game, but they're really fun overall.

Glad you mentioned Lunar 2 complete! It's seriously one of the best direct sequels I have ever seen. Not to mention when you get towards the end and see what I call, one of the saddest parts ever in any game. Something I never thought I would have ever seen.

I wholeheartedly agree with Lunar being at the top. Nothin else has over 2 hours of animated cutscenes, a brilliant story, great voice acting, and a simple yet rewarding battle system. Its great game that's worth playing, whether you buy it or run it on an emulator 👌

Wild Arms 1 would be my #1. loved that game, never really got into the sequels. Xenogears is a tragic tale also, might have been the best game ever if they'd finished it.

I've finished all of these except Star Ocean which I didn't care for and Grandia which I loved, but my save-file on Saturn got erased. Suikoden 2 is the best of these. Just a masterpiece. Nice list.

As a closing thought after watching this like 10 times lol. I hope modern fans realize the world doesn't just revolve around "Final Fantasy" there are so many great classic epics out there that deserve that recognition and playablity. I realize mainstream folks are always going to gravitate more towards stuff that is remade in some fashion or ported to modern hardware, but serously, as you have played FF VII remake and grown to enjoy the original Final Fantasy games as im seeing a massive influx now on twitch. Take some time and really check out some quality works of art that arn't just FF. There is alot of amazing adventures and fantasy worlds to explore on this great 32-bit system.

Great list! My top favorite ps1 games were Wild arms 2, Xenogears and Suikoden 2. I have played them multiple times and I never get tired of their gameplay and plot. Lunar was also a great game and I might have played it a couple times including the psp port but I never liked the battle system that much. That said, I really really liked its plot. I havent played Dragon Warrior 7 and Tales of Eternia, so I would have switched them for Legend of Dragoon/Chrono Cross and Wild Arms/Lunar 2. In any case, there were plenty of the great rpgs back then.
